It was Carlton swap Pick 9, 41 & 69 for WCE picks 14 and 24

WCE could then give Geelong 9 and next years first PSD Rd 1 pick for Kelly

Carlton presumably can use 14 for Papley and 24 for Jack Martin

Draft value for each of the picks on each side of the trade are roughly the same.
Obviously going to be lots of speculation now on what West Coast will offer and what Geelong want. But he'll end up getting to West Coast now. Players who nominate a club very rarely don't get there, and especially being uncontracted.

14 & 24 plus next years first rounder is way too much. Won't be offered that much in my opinion.

14 & Next year's first at the most. That's two first rounders.

Maybe 14 future 1st and a fringe player. Brander has been mentioned, will he get games anytime soon??

it's worth noting that when the Cats asked for compassion when Danger wanted to come home, they essentially got the best player in the league for Picks 9 & 28

Danger was a free agent at the time and Kelly is out of contract so its not apples for apples but its interesting to point out

This from @Spots is just so laughable; I assume you have your tongue firmly in your cheek.

I'd expect Brander to be getting regular games next year. JK sadly looks almost done. He might be able to have a better year in 2020 than this year though with a better pre-season, but you wouldn't think he'd play on after next year. I can also see him being rested at times next year with Brander filling in for him as JK winds down.

West Coast just have to get games into Brander next season. There was some talk of him being told by Adam Simpson around mid year that he was going to get a game playing on the wing but he the got injured at the wrong time and couldn't force his way in.

I've really liked what I've seen of him in the WAFL this year, he has huge potential. Very agile for a key tall. It's great to have a JK replacement with great upside ready to plug in.

The press like to throw Brander's name up in any potential Tim Kelly deal, but he's under contract, very much wanted and should be getting games next year. Also was a big West Coast fan growing up. You don't go trading away talented key talls and especially when JK only has 1 season left at most.

Thought Gore was also included in the deal.

So Kelly is out of contract , if Geelong and West Coast can't get a deal done , does he then have to nominate for the Draft and hope West Coast pick him up ?

Or if he stands out for 12 months does he then go back into the Draft ?

Yes he's out of contract.

Now that he's nominated West Coast... A deal will have to be done between the two clubs... Or Kelly will walk to the draft and Geelong get nothing for him. They won't let that happen. A deal will get done.

If he goes into the draft, he can set his financial terms and threaten that he won't play for any club except West Coast like Luke Ball did. If another club did draft him, He'd have to either play for them, or sit out the year. Then he'd be free to go where he wants.

A deal will get done between West Coast & Geelong however. AFL can mediate if requested during trade week.

In regard to the Kelly situation; should Geelong consider the fact that trading him to West Coast will presumably make them harder to beat for the premiership next season?

Kelly is hardly a favourite son after 2 years so not sure they will be too sympathetic to his situation. Will they be cold enough to just trade him to the highest bidder given they are now resigned to losing him. No skin off their nose if Kelly winds up somewhere he doesn’t want to be, in fact it probably helps their 2020 chances. I acknowledge his lack of desire to play elsewhere would affect what other teams would be prepared to pay.

It interesting to point out isn’t it? Crows played played ball and got the deal done, yet Geelong appear to want to play hard ball now, and no I don’t really care about the distinction between off contract and free agency. I expect the AFL would be smoothing things over behind the scenes, given his compelling family reasons. I’ll note that it’s possible that their salary cap and restrictions on player movement are possibly against Australian restraint of trade laws and competition laws but as such have never been challenged in court, probably through mutual agreement and the AFL's ability to get things like this done.

He is THE definition of steak knives Herbie, got the deal done, made the Crows feel good about it but didn’t play an AFL game for them. Wayne Milera was what the Crows really got out of it!

Sorry that wasn’t my opinion.. that’s what people were suggesting Carlton could use the picks on.. not so sure about Martin but Papley worth much more imo

Its interesting to hear you say this. I’m over on the East coast and all I’ve heard on Brander comes from some Facebook supporters groups I’m in and no one in those is talking Brander up at all... he’s still young and looks a decent size

12 months before his draft... Brander was in the conversation for the number 1 overall pick. A quieter final junior year saw him slip a bit. But the Eagles where staggered when he was still available at pick 13. Was expected to go much earlier, so we jumped at the chance of a potential elite future JK replacement.

Ideally we'd love to have got some more games into him by now, but partly through his injuries and the position the club is in at the moment challenging for Premierships with JK & Darling anchoring the forward line and the emergence of Oscar Allen this year... Brander just hasn't got his shot yet.

We all know key forwards take a while to develop, even JK was pretty raw in his early Carlton days. So to give up and trade him as "steak knives" at this point would be a bit foolish in my opinion.
