Sehwag 319 SR 104.93
Hayden 380 SR 86.95
Sehwag 309 SR 82.40
Warner 335* SR 80.14
Wow. All openers too, albeit that makes sense in that their opportunity is slightly better.

Warner was asked last night whether he thought he’d get another shot at 400 (or similar). He mentioned that he thought Rohit Sharma was probably most likely, which seems a pretty astute choice.

Poster boy with a century in the Shield game today , could be timely given what has been happening with Paine and his fingers today.
Interesting captaincy call if it happens! Haven’t even got a senior batsman like Khawaja to take the reins for a match or two. Maybe Patty would get a run. Would love to see it.

Would CA turn to Steve Smith as captain as a short term expedient?
Smithy has another 12 month leadership ban that he’s currently serving:

So Smith, Warner and I’d suggest Wade are out based on history. It’s not going to be Burns or Labuschagne.

I reckon it’s out of Head, Cummins and Hazlewood based on them being VC historically (maybe even this series - I actually don’t know who has it right now!). Cummins would be my preference but I reckon Head could be their favorite given he’s a batsman. Weird that they want Carey captaining SA though, so the selectors’ thinking may have changed.

Cummins is definitely one of the VC , I thought during the Gabba Test they said Head was back as VC.

Maybe Wade as a option ?

I thought Smith was able to be captain again from April 2020.

Hohns has been pushing Carey's leadership qualities for months now , maybe he does a Lee Germon and captains on debut.

I think that is correct re Smith (ie, he’s partway through his 12 month additional captaincy ban, which I think started when he was eligible to play again, which I recall as April).

I never really understood why bowlers don’t get picked to captain (potentially influenced by the fact I was a bowler, who captained at low levels). I get that there are (mild?) advantages to having a batsman do it, but it’s surprising to me how seldom selectors are willing to back a specific individual to overcome them - there are only 11 options on each team, and bowlers usually make up more than a third of them!

Selectors seem much more willing to choose keepers, who have quite a difficult role as is as I see it, and are now expected to bat well in addition to their keeping and potentially captaincy responsibilities.

I think they think bowlers have enough on their plate trying to get batsmen out , then switching off mentally between overs without having the stresses and worries of being the captain as well.

Plus the fact they may over bowl themselves or worse under bowl themselves.

Oh and add the fact we have this stupid rotation policy for fast bowlers and horses for courses selection , yet Burns averages 18ish in pink ball cricket but no talk of him missing out and bringing in a pink ball specialist ?

Think Paine will call it a day at the end of the NZ series , Smith will get the job back & Carey will soon be his deputy.

Won't belong before the calls of Labuschagne for captain will begin.

Mitch Marsh as captain , the public would love that ?

Exactly, not sure why bowlers need to be rotated but not batsman. Fast bowling is more physically demanding but batsmen do need a rest too at times. Perhaps more on a series bus series basis though.

I tend to agree re Paine and Smith. I think they’d like Carey in there but Wade as keeper would have to be considered. I suppose if they go with Carey as keeper and VC the succession planning is looking a lot more robust.
