The pledge a desperate Harley made to the Demons
January 29, 2020

MELBOURNE recruit Harley Bennell pledged to give up alcohol in order to win a lifeline at the Demons and avoid previous off-field dramas that have plagued his AFL career...……..Bennell's time at Gold Coast and Fremantle, which netted 83 AFL games, was hindered by a series of calf setbacks and alcohol-fuelled incidents...…...

………..Bennell told AFL.com.au in 2015 alcohol had impacted his decision to use illicit drugs as a Sun in 2013, before he was kicked off a flight in 2017 and banished from the Dockers in 2018, both due to alcohol-fuelled behaviour...…..."I don't really care about what's happened in the past. What I need to know is that you're going to try and do everything you can, so it doesn't happen in the future", Goodwin said...…..

………..The 27-year-old was asked by list boss Tim Lamb how he'd cope with not consuming alcohol during his training block with the Demons.
"Fine (with that)," Bennell replied. "(I) put my hand on my heart with that."...…..

……..."People make mistakes all the time and they get to a point in life where they say, 'I'm going to make some genuine change' and they try and make a career out of something.

The second episode of To Hell and Back can be seen from 7pm AEDT on Melbourne's website, social media channels and AFL.com.au.
It includes Goodwin addressing mistakes made in 2019, midfielder Aaron vandenBerg's road to recovery and fitness boss Darren Burgess' tough love with his new players.

Reading between the lines, Cockatoo is a long way from playing.

Rookies are looking pretty light on this year.
Kropenyeri-Pickett , Weightman , Georgiades , McAdam , Rankine , King , Cahill , Mahony , Williams , Budarick

Bonar , Hill

maybe go higher to Stengle , Townsend

all off the top of my head , and Marsh hasn't even started yet ?

not sure how many you need

still 31 days to go

Yep, it's now looking like we're gonna be choosing Fwd rookies on output and price. And JS of course.

That's funny. I have Hosie on my forward bench.! At least there's some options in the forward line.

No Bonar for me, too much of a risk of becoming a 10 possession player, could be wrong, but the intra club hitout didn't sound positive.

Same applies to Rankine, he could be a finisher, but not a high possession getter, could become a quality 'Parker 2019'.

I've brought in K Pickett, Geogiades and King. King could be rested after round 5, pending how his knee is holding up.

Interesting to see which rookies get a go and play well this week.

I think Rankine will be on par, if not better than K Pickett as far as SC scores go.

Reckon there will be some matches where Kozzie has very few touches, such is the role of a small forward.

Agree on Bonar.. his scoring last year wasn’t exceptional and hard to justify the premium price for a guy likely to punch out 80’s at best

Whitfield + Martin + Heeney + $ 150k + $ 150k + $ 150k = $ 2.1 million approx

for 102 + 98 + 95 + 55 + 55 + 55 = 460

let's see

Ceglar + Wingard + Lynch + Steven + Smith + Bonar = roughly $ 2.2

say 85 + 85 + 85 + 85 + 85 + 65 = 490 (those 5 could all go 90+ as well or maybe not)

King & Rankine on the bench , may not need rookies if they are not named Round 1 , not the end of the world

Disclaimer : additions done in my head without looking at exact prices
