Not injured but the talk out of GWS is that he will spend more time up forward this season.
Maybe not so much now with Ward not in for the first month, plus Taranto out. Cogs might end up with more time forward when those two are back and could be ripe for a Bruyn Manouvre (if that's the right terminology)

I like crouch but I’d say cogs would be the best.
Coniglio would be one in that range for me (is he still injured?!).
Played for the all stars. He's cherry ripe.
Unfortunately I started Cogs last year and have bad memories of 60 point first quarters and then not scoring for a half, trading him out with injury and missing his 200 game. Don’t like the depth in the GWS mids.

Same here. The playing more forward stuff put me off a bit but i think the same was said about Whitfield and it didn't seem to slow him down any. Cogs seems to have decent goal sense as well and i think any player who can score 200+ needs to be at least considered but at the same time he does miss alot of games and whether that changes now that he is skipper is anyone's guess. I almost feel like its best to avoid that pricepoint altogether even though it's where we often find those guys that take the next step.

There's also likely to be a heap more mid time available and a bucket load of disposals if Taranto misses a few, Cogs may spend more time in the middle as might Greene early in the season as might Hately as might Green.

Surprised there isnt more love for Zerrett/MCrouch in that 550-590 bracket. 2% and 1% ownership, right age (24), and both have been 110+ before. Seemed towards the back end of last year they started to get more love from CD too.
I think both are reasonably good options but I also think they're a level behind the likes of Danger, Bont and upwards from there. Not a great deal difference in price but I find myself if I'm looking at Zerrett or Crouch then why not save a few extra dollars and get Cogs. Although I do think both are better options then Cogs really. Crouch needs to get big numbers to score well though, certainly he's capable but you just know 20 disposals from Crouch is going to be lucky to get you 80ppg.

Durability a concern for mine., although I did start him last year. Heavily considering TK aswell. Feels like crows want to play a high possession chip mark game, which suits Crouch massively. Merretts contested footy numbers worry me, but he's extremely durable and has a pretty soft start to the year.

Interesting how players (or at least forum contributors) seem to coalesce around a certain way of looking at things each year. I think usually picks like Crouch and Zerrett are are considered quite attractive, coming with a known role and relatively high floor and the (outside?) chance of a further breakout, but this year (rightly or wrongly) most people think the top mids are (a) likely to score significantly above the second-tier and (b) capable of outscoring their price despite already being expensive, and so it's not worth taking a gamble on the next rung down.

I think relatively safe value options like Docherty and Devon Smith probably contribute to this as well, by making it possible to still reach 14-15 non-rookies while starting the expensive mids.

The fact a lot of people were to some degree 'burnt' by Zerrett and Crouch last year is also a factor.

FWIW I think they're both reasonable picks but I am with the crowds in the mids and am pretty set on starting four or five from Macrae, JKelly, Cripps, Bont, Oliver and Danger.

EDITED to add I think they are probably a year past the usual breakout stage so while it's not impossible they can improve it's also not irrational to think they've found their level.

Neale, Fyfe and Dunkley not being considered mate? I understand the reasons why they’d have a line through their names but just want to confirm that’s where you’re at with them (at the moment).

Merrett is durable, no doubting that. From your post above and just my thoughts, I'd be more inclined to go with TK. Eagles will be strong, he'll get plenty of midfield time and enjoy being home I think. Zerrett and Crouch I think we know what we'll get.

the trouble I think with Zerrett and Crouch is consistency and as long as they continue to through in sub 80 scores with a couple as low as 50, they'll really struggle to take that next step in SC scoring. Merrett is susceptible to a tag, if he gets a couple each year there the 50/50 scores and Crouch also finds himself on a couple of 35 disposal games or less which again means low scores for him.

If there was $100k difference I'd be looking closer at these two.

Yes, I think I have settled on starting none of those three. Obviously all have their own significant appeal and I have FOMO but I am more confident in the others and you can't start them all.

I was the same but Neale made me nervous watching him in that first Marsh series and remembering not having him from round 1 last year. Concious of chasing points but he can rack them up quickly.

There are also no mid fallen premiums like a Murphy, Beams or Libba from previous seasons, which lends itself to a more traditional GnR structure in the midfield, and as you mentioned people are finding value in other lines.

Thanks mate, yeah the FOMO is real for sure. I’m probably putting a little too much emphasis on the early draw for Danger and Oliver. Both seem underpriced and almost certainties to finish top 10 for total points. Need to revisit I think.

@Impromptu

any thought of starting a all rookie midfield again ?

Rowell , Anderson , Bonar * , Ash * , Caldwell , D Stephens , Serong , Green , McInerney , Pickett , Budarick *

or even 2/3-9/8
Problem for me is the scoring potential of some of these mids IMO isn't that high. Rowell, Ash (opportunity), Green (opportunity), Pickett and McInerney are possibly the only ones at this stage that could score well. Ash would probably rather have in defence.

Would need to look at it a bit closer, I think you would want 1 maybe 2 out right premiums like Macrae and Neale to ahve solid captain choices and underpin some decent scores each week. I'm not sure there are enough options either forward or back for premiums to hit uber premium scoring. Whitfield, Martin...........Lloyd?????? and that's it for me that could go 105+

Was just having a bit of a look this morning given the uncertainty (lack of clarity) on D & F rookies.

You can get to a 2/3-0-8 midfield with the likes of :-

Laird , Sicily , Houston , Dawson , Docherty
Grundy , Gawn
Whitfield , Martin , Heeney , Lynch , Smith

you are then pretty much locking in your D line from the start.

definitely would need double downgrades to get enough $$$ then to upgrade the rookie mids , highly doubtful they all get even close to $ 400k

I used to go with skinnier midfields than most and found it hard yards to upgrade the rookies because you don’t get as many good value options presenting as you go up forward and back. Plus I think you end up ignoring value on other lines because you have so much spare cash. I’ve felt at a disadvantage each time I’ve done it.

I think if you want to stretch out one line this year (like recent years) it’s defence. Even if it’s Roberton/Ash/Noble from D2/D3.

I think we will see better scoring per $ from those expensive rookies compared to the mid ones. Good scoring first year expensive mid rookies are the exception.

It's risky and does take away a lot of flexibility in locking away any line at the start of round 1. If Laird doesn't return to his best, Sicily the same, Houston becomes inconsitent and Dawson unproven then it's hard to move these guys on especially if you have issues everywhere else.

You've pretty much resigned to the fact that you need to take only one of Lloyd, Houli, Hurn, Williams, Daniel, Stewart, Crisp, Weller etc and a case can be made that all of these guys maybe the best 6 defenders this season.
