@Ben's Beasts

Any chance Bedford pushes out Spargo for R1...?
It’s really hard to pick that last small forward. I thought Bedford was impressive in the practice match against the Roos and he was also good in the half of footy he played against Hawthorn last night.

In saying that, Spargo had a slow start last night but worked his way into the game and was serviceable. Plus he played the full game which probably shows that he is preferred.

Then there’s Pickett who was rested last night. He may be ahead of both.

Vanders picked up yet another foot injury last night so depending on the severity, there may be two spots available for the three previously mentioned.

Personally I would love to see both Pickett and Bedford picked ahead of Spargo and play round 1.

To answer your question, yes I think there’s a chance that Bedford plays round 1 and that could be with or without Spargo.

I was wondering who the 100% rookie "locks" were in terms of playing in R1?

From my understanding:
Locks for R1
Def: Hill, McAsey, Noble, BZT
Mid: Rowell, Pickett
Ruck:
Fwd: King

Fairly close to locks might also be Davis, Budarick and Anderson
Def Rookie Locks (to play R1): Hill, McAsey, Noble, BZT

Maybes for R1: Ash (named on field), T.Watson(ext bench), Williamson (ext bench), Brander (ext bench), Keane (ext bench), N.Murphy (ext bench), T.Murphy (ext bench), Nyoun (ext bench), Kennerley (ext bench), B.Williams (injured), H.Young (injured)

Gould, Butts, Greaves, McLennan all not options.

I think I'd rather put a good rookie to play on the bench than have someone like Pickett sitting on the bench or a poor cash cow. It has worked in the past. I seem to recall a past winner starting Dean Terlich at D8 even though he wasn't named rnd1. Hartley at Essendon was a good one. Petracca was an obvious one years ago and was good for looping. There are also good picks that don't play any pre season games. Shiel, Lewis Taylor, Petrevski Seaton.
Nothing obvious standing out but is anyone bullish on a rookie that we haven't seen or unlikely to be named rnd 1?
I'm thinking Hibberd at Essendon, McHenry at Adelaide, Rankine at Gold Coast.
Cockatoo is a bit less convincing given his poor games record and age.

Young would be the one for me. Can see him coming in pretty early but he’s pricey.

Rankine seems a fair chance for R1.

Don’t mind Hibberd, but I wouldn’t like to see him get a game at some level before the season started. He was apparently close to selection.
