Really hoping De Koning gets a crack early on, who doesn't want an early cash generating R3...?

I really liked what I saw from him in M2, albeit for only one quarter. I know he's young, raw and all that...but he showed enough endeavour/hunger in a quarter which others struggled to exhibit in a whole game. He actually does every facet pretty well, good positioning in ruck contest, good in the air and below his knees, good kicking skills...more importantly he actually tries hard. I think there's definitely a spot for him in their R1 team, whether their MC feels the same way...we'll see but I'm hoping anyways.

It'll be interesting how it plays out... I can imagine Xerri and BWilliams named on an ext bench and perhaps De Koning named in R1. In that situation, I guess you just take De Koning....

It's not that silly. I started a team from scratch with these players, and with a bit of tweaking to use up the rest of my cash came up with a side with only 2 rookies on field. Using Marsh averages, it would score just over 2K excluding the captain score, and that is with Grundy/Gawn both scoring in the 60's in the Marsh series.

I highly doubt some of those players match that form in the regular season and it only realistically leaves me with 10 possible keepers, but it's a reasonable base to work from. Issues are I expect cash generation could be an issue, and it may take a bit longer to get to full premium, but it wouldn't be the worst team I've ever started with.

Despite the rookies looking bad, there's a reasonable selection of 200-300K players this year. Worth noting.
possibly something like this

D: Docherty , Williams , Roberton , Noble , BZT , Starcevich / Williamson , Brander

M: 5 premiums + Whitfield , Rowell & Pickett / Green M9

R: Grundy , Gawn / Comden

F: TJL , Steven , Smith , Long , Lukosious , Bonar / King , Rankine

* Set and forget Rucks from the get go
* 6 premium mids
* relying on all of Doc , Lynch , Smith & Steven going 90+

still would need 10 upgrades , not sure the 7 playing bench rookies would make enough $$$ though

Pretty much. It was a strong midfield team, weaker defense and mainly mid priced forward line.

Ruled it out due to the cash generation likely not being high enough.

not liking Crocker or Georgiades starting onfield so the other option would be downgrade Gawn - > Jacobs/Smith/Naismith and try and get another D & F keeper somehow/somewhere

certainly worth thinking about it though

Bolter in the frame to fill second ruck spot for Eagles
By Nathan Schmook

WEST Coast ruck bolter Bailey Williams looks ready to press his claims for round one selection in Friday's intraclub hitout after being managed with hamstring tightness.

Williams was sidelined for Saturday's Marsh Community Series clash against Fremantle, setting him back in his push to support Nic Naitanui in the season-opener against Melbourne on March 22.

The second-year tall moved well at West Coast training on Monday, however, staying back after a short recovery/skills session to complete his own running at Mineral Resources Park.

He was kicking, collecting groundballs, and leapt for a big grab on the marking bag, suggesting he is ready to press his claims on Friday.

He ran for approximately another 30 minutes after the session finished, completing 200m runs at a good pace.

Coach Adam Simpson declared the second ruck spot was open after the Eagles' loss to Fremantle on Saturday night, with an intraclub hitout on Friday set to help determine who the match committee takes into round one.

Williams has been considered the frontrunner through the latter stages of the pre-season, impressing in training with his high leap, ability to impact at ground level and athleticism when playing forward.

Premiership ruckman Nathan Vardy has been the main support in both pre-season games for Naitanui, who didn't complete the outdoor skills session on Monday.

Vardy had four disposals and nine hitouts in 55 per cent game time against the Dockers at HBF Arena and hasn't yet done enough to lock down selection for round one.

Fellow ruckman Tom Hickey has missed both pre-season hitouts, instead lining up for the Eagles' WAFL team after being named in the senior squad.

Williams, who was recruited with pick No.35 in the 2018 NAB AFL Draft, is yet to debut.

Meanwhile, star defender Jeremy McGovern had a light session on Monday after returning from a heel injury in Saturday's pre-season clash against the Dockers, playing 56 per cent game time.

Young tall Oscar Allen, who is yet to play this pre-season after an ankle setback, moved well before an early finish after 30 minutes. The 20-year-old is another contender to play the forward/ruck position if he plays in Friday's intraclub.

Do we just try to go for as many as possible higher rookie priced players as it easier to down grade than find the money for a higher player if need to correct .

I've posted this in the AFL Useful Information thread but including it here for discussion as that thread is not open for comments for obviously reasons.

I know we are crying out for starting rookies BUT if the main purpose of our bench rookies is to generate $$$ (supposedly to get that magic $ 150k as quick as possible) should we actually even pick them from the start if we don't even think they can achieve that ?

Guys like Georgiades/Rankine/King etc probably need to score at 60 for 6-8 weeks to make that $ 150k profit , looks as though Crocker would need to go closer to 70.

Yes I understand the theory behind GnR , one of the more frustrating things I find in this game is when my bench rookies (maybe I pick the wrong ones) fail to generate as much cash as I need that then leads itself to compromised upgrades.

Maybe it is all about value from the start and spreading the $$$ to even more realistic bench options.
I think the main argument for not spending up on bench players is that you generally want your dollars invested on the ground, given this is obviously where the points are actually scored.

With that said, the purpose of bench rookies is primarily to generate cash, as you say, in addition to providing cover and giving you a chance to improve your on field rookie scoring (if your M9 starts scoring better than your M8, clearly you can switch them).

I think that means that it’s the classic points vs cash trade-off: if the value of the incremental cash generated by spending up onbench rookies is greater than the value of the on field points you initially sacrifice by investing cash off the field - then I think you do it.

Alternately I think you can pick donuts to play, or floating donuts for the loop ability, or go hard on pinch hitters and/or value premiums, and go from there.

You don't have to pick all the high priced rookies. Another option is to have a premium you are prepared to cut. For example if I have Sicily, Laird, Docherty and Ryan in the backline I'm prepared to cut Ryan down to a Cumming or Roberton for some cash. They all play Sat, Sun so I'll know Friday night which rookies have been named giving me all Saturday morning to make some decisions.
