I reckon they play Mahony over Garner.
Garner hasn't been too bad either.

52 from 71%, 8 PAs
53 from 42% (second half only), 14 PAs

Mahony has done
30 from 69% , 8 PAs
53 from 73%, 14 PAs

Pretty close but SC per %TOG better for Garner

He was a given but a couple from McInnery, McHenry, T.Brown, Mahoney, Budarick would be very handy.

I can’t see Serong, Anderson or Stephens averaging 65+. Very expensive bench warmers. I think all 3 will become very good players but from a SC cash cow prospective they are below par.

I guess we play the hand that has been dealt to us.

Think it's a bonus if they are named Round 1 , who knows for certain if they are going to last 6-8 games in a row ?

Didn't Balta end up making over $ 150 k ?

Yes I started Parker , Scott , Setterfield and some other dud.

Plenty of other options in that $ 200-300k bracket to start that probably will all need to be upgraded though.

Certainly looks like there will be enough rookies to start but as for their scoring potential and JS then hopefully they play well enough to stay in the team.

I can't see the point in starting players that are not even named though on the bench just because they fit into the < or = $ 123,900.00 mark and then "hope" they play , hopefully these players present in Round 7-8 as downgrade targets

See what official teamsheets bring I guess
Balta ... nearly cost me a new computer .. :)

Might make it even more interesting from the start if we do have to pay for higher priced players on our starting benches.

All hypothetical from the AFL website, but maybe this format will help coaches to finetune their Rookies setup before teams are announced.

Named in the 22
D: Noble, Ash, BZT, Mcasey, Starcevich, Brander, Williams
M: Rowell, Anderson, Serong, Green, Pickett
R: CCJ, Jackson
F: KKPickett, Georgiades, Taylor, Davis, Rankine, King, Sturt

Listed as Emergencies
D: Williamson, Watson
M: Stephens, T Brown, RCD, Robertson
R: Cameron
F: Bonar, Sparrow, Frampton, Crocker, Weightman, Budarick
Nice one, so simple but I didn't think of it. Have stolen your formatting and put it in my original post (plus adding a few of the more expensive ones like ZGL, Schultz, Townsend)

Ahern or Atley may even play as a forward. Mahony looked way off, so I hope they don't play him!

Interesting exercise but of course the AFL authors aren't the coaches so the coaches may have a different view. It just goes to show how differently the 50/50 selections can play out (and also showing how shaky the JS is of these critical cheap selections)

On the 50/50s, authors swung as follows:
  • Duman over Watson
  • J.Joyce over Budarick
  • Answerth & Starcevich over Robertson
  • Garner over Mahony
  • Newman over T.Williamson
  • S.Reid (if fit) over DStephens and
  • B.Brown (if fit) over Xerri
  • Hall & Anderson over Bonar
BUT
  • Serong over CBlakely
  • Ash over Cummings
  • B.Williams over Vardy
  • Brander over Hutchings
  • Jackson over Weiderman
I think we may get at least one of Budarick/Mahony (so it may not be this bad) but as you can see, it's very borderline so we should all have backup plans expecting the worst (i.e. that those guys don't get named). Otherwise, it will be panic stations and you may end up with compromise picks that you hadn't expected to make.

It does show how precarious though some of these selections could be, plenty might only get a week or two.

Exactly right. That's why I'm considering not bothering with a FD as I think some of these guys on the cusp like a Budarick/Mahony could easily become donuts even if named in R1. Brander as well I think will need good form to keep his spot but I think will be given a chance from R1.

I also think Freo are crazy if they play Serong over Blakely.

Yeah there’s a couple like that, if I was Cummings I would be asking what I had to do to get a run if Williams missed and Ash got a run. I’m a big Ash fan but Cumming was bloody good last praccy match.

That's very interesting , McCluggage went 54.2
I have been a bit too optimistic taking probably the best winger in the AFL as an example haha.

But Lachie Whitfield is also one of the best in the comp atm and he went 73. Andy McGrath (although played defence) went at 71 and he had terrible scoring in the preseason as well.

Angus Brayshaw went at 65 in his first season (but copped a few sub vests as well).

Bascially, I think 65+ is possible for Anderson considering his pedigree as a top 2 pick, but yes of course, preseason scoring isn't that promising.

Yeah agree on that one. I think I'd have Cumming over Ash, Blakely over Serong.

But I think Budarick will play - J.Joyce keeping him out is very questionable. Although Joyce had more TOG in Marsh 2, Budarick was more impressive in Marsh 1 and the second half of Marsh 2. But just goes to show that his JS isn't solid.

Also trust LITS' judgement that Brander and B.Williams will play (especially B.Williams). Think Brander's JS could be shaky though but still not a reason to overlook if named.

Bonar could get a chance, if you take the view that he was just being eased back after his hammy scare.

But otherwise, I agree with the prediction that Watson, D.Cameron, Robertson, McInerney, Williamson and Mahony will not play in R1.
