This scares my GnR heavy team!

New rules will change the game for young draftees, says Garland

THE AFL's rule changes for 2014 will have a major impact on how teams draft and develop their players, says Melbourne defender Colin Garland.

Two key changes have been slated for next season – the introduction of the contentious interchange cap and the League's crackdown on team runners.

Clubs will only be able to make 120 rotations per game from next season, while the AFL will allow each team just one runner in 2014, down from two.

That adds to the substitute rule which was launched before the 2011 season, in a bid to reduce congestion around the ground.

Speaking candidly to AFL.com.au, Garland believes these specific changes will influence the type of player clubs target in the draft, and the way young players are blooded once in the system.

"The game's never been tougher for an 18-year-old to come in and play," Garland said.

"There'll probably be more of an onus on younger players to develop at lower levels and you'll probably find – which we have found over the last few years – a lot of mature guys get drafted.

"With those rules and the way the lists are, you just can't afford to have that many young blokes on your list."

The Demons have already focused on their plans to adjust to the impending interchange cap and Garland believes teams will employ certain tactics in a bid to get an advantage over their rivals.

"You'll probably see a lot of midfielders spend a lot of time up forward," he said.

"All these gun midfielders – like (Trent) Cotchin and (Gary) Ablett – might end up playing deep forward for a bit, a la what Kevin Bartlett used to do."

Garland also thinks clubs might be forced to examine the trend of starting their star players on the bench at the start of games in an attempt to shake an opponent's tag.

Given the rationing of rotations that needs to take place, Garland said the AFL had reached a suitable figure.

"As a player we've sort of got used to it now. When it was going to be 80 (rotations) I think that was going to be ridiculous, but 120 is more realistic," he said.

Converting athletes into footballers has been one way clubs have adapted to the changing landscape of the game, according to Garland.

Garland said players such as Geelong's Mark Blicavs – a former steeplechaser – have singlehandedly altered the way clubs have approached their drafting processes.

However, Garland hopes the rule changes won't stop players with AFL-level ability from playing at the highest level.

"You don't want to see guys not given the opportunity, that you know can play AFL, but they can't get a game because of fitness reasons with the rotations," he said.

"When you get drafted now you've got to be able to run, otherwise you just can't play AFL."

To everyone who posts on this site.
May you be from Victoria, interstate or overseas.
Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy 2014.
Second this. And in the spirit of Christmas, I have penned an ode to SC 2014 (apologies as it doesn't roll off the tongue quite like the original):

The Twelve Days of Supercoach

On the first day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
No donuts in season ’14.

On the second day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the third day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Three winning bye rounds,
Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the fourth day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Four rampaging ruckmen,
Three winning bye rounds,
Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the fifth day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Five gun defenders,
Four rampaging ruckmen,
Three winning bye rounds,
Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the sixth day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Six premo mids,
Five gun defenders,

On the seventh day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Seven uninjured forwards,
Six premo mids,
Five gun defenders,
Four rampaging ruckmen,
Three winning bye rounds,

And no donuts in season ’14.

On the eighth day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Eight reserves playing weekly,
Seven uninjured forwards,
Six premo mids,
Five gun defenders,
Four rampaging ruckmen,
Three winning bye rounds,
Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the ninth day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Nine weekly round wins,
Eight reserves playing weekly,
Seven uninjured forwards,
Six premo mids,
Five gun defenders,
Four rampaging ruckmen,

Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the tenth day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Ten mooing cash cows,
Nine weekly round wins,
Eight reserves playing weekly,
Seven uninjured forwards,
Six premo mids,
Five gun defenders,
Four rampaging ruckmen,
Three winning bye rounds,
Two Gary Abletts
And no donuts in season ’14.

On the eleventh day of Christmas
The footy Gods gave to me:
Eleven extra trades,
Ten mooing cash cows,
Nine weekly round wins,
Eight reserves playing weekly,
Seven uninjured forwards,
Six premo mids,
Five gun defenders,
Four rampaging ruckmen,
Three winning bye rounds,

As someone else said, Rowsus or Fresh most likely.
I kept the averages for 2013 in the drafting spreadsheet for FDL but past seasons you'll need Fresh most likely if he keeps them.

Santa is REAL. He gave it to me for free too.... He sent it to me last week...lol..

If you got a query on a player Goodies for his average in next hour let me know what average you want and I'll try to answer it before I go out. With the book Santa sent to me it is easy for me to find it and answer for you.

If not online now to ask me, I probably won't be on here much until after Christmas.
Anyway, if you want a spreadsheet for many players the usual suspects of Rowsus and Fresh are the ones to check in with if they want to share...lol

Just on SC whilst thinking about it.
We all know the rookies pricing has gone up a little on past two seasons which makes things tougher. Having another thing that makes it tougher to find rookies is that we no longer are generously given many options from the two most recent expansion clubs of Gold Coast & GWS. With both now being in league at least a couple of years the abundance of obvious rookie selections is removed by quite a bit. Combine the increased price plus less options means if old coaches that played SC for numerous seasons do not adapt to changing landscape and find other ways to get an increase in value of squad in first part of season and how that helps with overall game then they stand little chance of overall success.

Experienced SC's have the advantage as we played the game before the game was made easier for the masses and before the expansion clubs were introduced. Newer coaches will find it harder to edapt as they are used to being drip fed quality cheap rookies.

I'm just glad the drip feed is removed. The more coaches have to think, the better for any game....

Having said that, it is a real stab in dark to some extent which actual rookies just happen to play early games that suit Supercoach. You might pick
a good one and just happens to miss early rounds or get injured or subbed in round 1 and then your behind a little on those that missed it whether through good thinking or just plain luck they went for someone else with no real thought.

With extra price on rookies it helps make the choice of what rookie to choose and how many more challenging. A *good* challenge for a game where most of info is given to people on a platter...

Good points Oz (and Nathan). I'm looking forward to the challenge this season. The few extra variables should make things interesting. More likely to see some varying starting line-ups and strategies I suspect. Here's hoping my "picker" is on song this season... First time for everything I guess.
