Competitions 2024 SCS One-Eyed Club Challenge

@Mr_Arrogance finally helps his Cats out of the litterbox to secure a belated trip to the top of the leaderboard with a pretty impressive score of 2621. Second place, representing the Magpies, is @Darkie who was just 14 points back with another stellar score of 2607. Tough gig to get on the podium this week as 2600 was only enough to get you on the third step but that was still a great effort by @warewolves and the Doggies.

So the Bombers win the inaugural SCS One-Eyed Club Challenge after dominating most of the year however they did not have it all there own way in the final round as @nath_99 cold only get them up to 7th. This meant their comfortable margin of 128 going into the final round was cut to a final winning margin of just 40 points as @Darkie and his Magpies came with a late withering run....um flight...well you know what I mean. I am almost tempted to leave it there but unfortunately duty compels me to also report that @_Slip_ was also able to get his Hawks into 3rd position in a Richie Porte like performance as they placed 6th this week. Unfortunately that was enough to displace the Kangaroos who dropped to 4th after @Bontempele could only get them up to 13th this week (we woz robbed!!)

Well we are all done and hopefully the comp added a further little avenue of interest for us totally obsessed Supercoachers. My impression is that it didn't quite engage people how I thought it might as I hoped it may attract some good natured banter between the various supporter groups, but really other than my subtle jibes at the Hawks every now again which attracted little more than a nibble at the time, there really wasn't any of that. Clearly the members of this forum are just too nice. Happy to take any feedback but not sure that I would go around again next year. In hindsight the different representations probably had a bigger impact than I thought it would. I wonder whether a head to head comp where the supporter groups are pitted against one another in the same week that they actually play each other on the field would work better. Well there you go - I was secretly hoping to put up a score worthy of representing the Pies for at least a round before the season was out, and I got there at the final opportunity!

I thought this was a great comp and found it interesting to follow. Had I been closer to a competitive score (in the sense of being the beat for my club) I reckon I would have been posting more actively, but I certainly enjoyed following its progress.

If you were considering a tweak next year to encourage the banter, I like your idea of clubs facing off head to head in the same round as the AFL teams do.

There’s also a pretty strong argument in favour of using averages from a fairness perspective, but as the supporter of one of the most popular clubs, personally I don’t mind it too much as it is 🙂 I suspect this may not add a lot of extra work (perhaps just an AVERAGE vs MAX function?) but it might depend on how it is set up.

Either way, thanks for running the comp @Beg2Differ, and I’m happy to have managed to represent the Pies before the season was out! 🙂

Thanks for the positive feedback gents. It would be straight forward to change it to average rather than max because I am grabbing all the scores from the group anyway.

However part of the initial intent of the comp was to acknowledge the highest scorer from each team and having that score used as the counter for your team I thought would give that member a bit of a buzz (as @Darkie appears to have got in the final round but unfortunately I personally don’t know). Using the average would break that link but I suppose the max scorer could still be acknowledged.

The other thing is that I didn‘t want to discourage teams from being involved if they felt they were at a lower standard.

So those pesky Bombers continue to make a mockery of this competitions by having yet another representative step up to take them to the round victory. This time it was @jbar who top scored in the group and took the victory by 17 points over the @bunlit led Kangaroos. @Nick T assists his Lions to their highest rank for the season finishing 3rd 5 points further back.

Overall Essendon extend their lead out to 151 and will be difficult to topple with just 3 rounds to go. The Magpies retain second after @simonoz placed them 7th for the round. North Melbourne get into the top 3 for the first time this year thanks to @bunlit. In a horrible year on field for the Shinboners at least their Supercoachers are flying to flag to uphold a bit of respectability.

Highlight of my season was being Carltons rep twice early in the season (round 2 &4 from memory) and seeing the blues leading the leader board at that time.
Probably says more about my season than the competition though, looked forward to the after round post each week.

So what is the appetite on the site for me to run this again this year? I am happy to do it and it is not a massive task however I am reluctant if there are only a handful that take an active interest.

If I was to do it I would tweak it slightly from last year and it would operate as follows.

• Identify the highest score amongst followers of each AFL club from the SCS Group. Did consider some alternatives however decided to keep it simple and acknowledge the highest scorer from each club.
• That score would represent that club in a matchup against the club that that team plays in that round. ie it would be a head to head type comp rather than an aggregate points comp like last year.
• Not sure yet if it would have finals and how that would work.

As it stands there are about 126 in the SCS Group of which about 110 have been matched to a SCS member and a club. Most of the clubs only have a few reps so the biggest challenge is to get sufficient from each club to be competitive against the clubs with more reps.

Last year there were about 185 matched and that took a lot of effort by going through the site and identifying supporters of each club and sending a PM in the 2 or 3 weeks leading up to the season. Not sure I have the energy to do that again this year.

It's up to you. I really enjoyed it last year, but I also know how much effort it takes to identify clubs for everyone in the group.

The SuperCoachScores One-Eyed Club Challenge is back for another year in a slightly different format. Given the Roos appear highly unlikely to jag it for a victory this year it will be up the SuperCoachScores Roos fraternity to fly the flag and they have got off to a flying start with @Mudflap scoring highest in the SCS group to record a round 1 victory against against @Tex and his Port Adelaide brethryn. The most celebrated second place-getters in history did what comes natural and were second highest scorers for the week with @Herbie66 getting his Magpies up over the The Doggies represented by @Under The Dome to avenge the actual result from last Friday. Carlton did similar with the help of @kakarot to get the 3rd highest score and do something that the AFL teams hasn't done in a decade; get a win in the first 2 rounds. Extremely disappointing to see (not) that @Goodie's Guns couldn't quite his hawks up over the @BomberArmy led bombers. Hopefully they are in for a disappointing year.

There are currently 167 in the SCS Group of which I have been able to match up 127 to a SCS member and a team. Round 2 saw 6 of the 9 results go against the AFL results. The top scorer for the week was @Ironhawk who's Hawks consigned the @nicohighscore / @Seymour Skinner skin led Tigers to an 0-2 start. First week in for @Spifflicator and he ranks second as GWS beats Fremantle despite @50 shades of Wade best efforts. @manyproblems placed 3rd to help Adelaide to the victory over Sydney where @jaca was their rep.

West Coast move to the top of the ladder from Adelaide and North Melbourne. North is currently top ranked on total points to provide a modicum of joy to their followers in what is destined to be a long season (going along this afternoon to support the club but not anticipating an enjoyable time). Note that I did use @Spifflicator's score from round 1 for GWS so as not to put GWS at a massive % disadvantage to the rest of the field; and give The Saints a massive % advantage.
