I'm not sure I understand this. I understand the bit about Longer being $34,200 cheaper, but the way I see it is this. St Kilda "let" McEvoy go well before they secured Longer. They would only do that, if they were satisfied the current back up (Hickey) was at a stage he could do a more than reasonable job of taking over from McEvoy. They couldn't rely on what they might be able to trade to, or draft down the track. It means to me, they have confidence in Hickey to do the job, and Longer was brought in as back up. The Coaches planning on starting Longer at R3 will most likely be forced into re-jigging their teams, if/when he is not selected in round 1.
I haven't got either in my side.
However the Saints could have traded McEvoy knowing that Hickey could do the job.
That doesn't rule out that they have simply recruited a better player later on when the opportunity arose.
I would say that given Longer's longings for more playing time in his negotiations, that he has been given the number one ruck job to lose OR is is very confident in being the number one ruck.
I would also say that he is simply a better player than Hickey, and although they were ready to rebuild with Hickey, they gladly signed the promising Longer when he agreed to be traded there.

Not sure about the idea of picking Sandi
and also a mid pricer on your bench
In case he breaks down. Effectively you
are paying 600k for Sandilands points.

I'm not sure if it's wishful thinking, but I see Jacobs improving heaps on last season.
If he get back to anywhere near his 2012 SC scores he is good value at $460K.
Only real AFL ruckman on the Adelaide list, so great job security and ground time.

Re conflicting opinion just wait till we get into the season, the biggest conflicting opinion is between regular poster OzRulesFootball and Mick Malthouse! :)
rofl Phil.

This season I promise myself to not let Mick get on my nerves...lol..

See. I am even calling him Mick now :)

Progress made in just accepting him even if I'm sure he'll continue to frustrate me from time to time rather than every minute of the season ...lol

I actually don't hate Malthouse but there are times his views drive me bonkers but he's been doing his job for over 30 years now, so he knows a thing or two that I don't...lol

He actually says some smart things a lot of time too.
I'm sure in person he is very much an ok guy.
Most of guys he has coached at 4 clubs speak highly of him.
Maybe Brad Hardie would not agree....lol

Mumford could be interesting as well, finished the year with 123,113,111,102,91,159 for 116.5 Ave for the last 6.
Was he playing injured through the first half of the year as he was only averaging 80 up until round 17 when his run started?

Had him last year (and the year before) and while he was a nightmare last year, I tend to agree.

I read something recently about him actually which i've posted below as you need to log in to read anything on the hun now

LOOKING BACK - 2013

Unlucky not to be named an All-Australian in 2012, Jacobs took a step back last season.

While he played every game and won the third-most hit-outs of any ruckman (622), his output dropped. He went from being the eighth-ranked ruckman (by Champion Data rankings points) in the competition in 2012 to the 21st in 2013. His disposals average fell from 13.4 to 11.3, goal assists from 12 to four and he was involved in just 15 per cent of Adelaide's scoring chains - ranked 38th of all ruckmen.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2014

A return to his best. Jacobs wasn't happy with his 2013 season, admitting he "rode the wave'' of his standout 2012 campaign, and has vowed to make amends. He went to work virtually as soon as the Crows' season finished, undertaking private training sessions away from the club to improve his fitness and agility. The early signs are encouraging. Jacobs has reported personal-best running times and has shed a couple of kilograms in a bid to cover more territory and influence more contests next year.

WHAT'S BEEN SAID

"It was a tough year. I probably just didn't hit the consistency levels that I did the year before. But I learnt a lot, including how important preparation is and I'm very happy with my running times and all of that stuff.''

- Sam Jacobs.
The what to expect section sounds very promising.

Thanks for that IDIG.
I have Leuenberger and Sandilands at present, but won't take too much convincing during the NAB Cup to change one of them to Jacobs.

If I remember correctly Mumford did have some niggles early last year, and the end part to his year was obviously excellent.
When making a decision on having Mumford I would be looking at the GWS structure - will he play as the only ruckman?

After waiting 17 rounds in FDL Draft to actually draft a ruckman it is nice to read this a few minutes later :)

I am wanting to know this too. Surely he was recruited as No.1 ruck with Giles as backup?

Pretty sure Mumford will be the number 1 ruck and Giles as his back-up :D
Yep.

Mummy for sure but Giles nice back up if back spasms play up.

I tend to think Giles used a bit as tall forward pocket at times too. They probably use him to assist taking heat from young key forwards on Gaints team, maybe even down back at times as they could do with helping hand of talls down back.

Interestingly RAMP suggests that Giles will have a very good patch from rounds 2 to 8. If it just wasn't for that pesky Mummy joining the team....
