I'm of the thought Gawn will be number 1 ave and points baring injury.
Grundy was a little disappointing last year but there were excuses.
Starting Flynn at R2 allows us to look if he returns to his best or whether others ie ROB will challenge.
Grundy - Rookie
Vs
Oliver - Flynn
Is an example of what you can do.

Looking back at last years starting prices compared to this year:

- Gawn $697,100 > $751,400 (+ $54,200)
- Grundy $705,900 > $648,200 (- $57,700)

- Goldstein $609,400 > 601,700 (-$7,700)
- ROB $517,400 > $570,800 (+ $53,400)

So to me the Grawndy combo roughly costs the same to start with this year ...

- By no means saying that I'm starting with that combo though .... Goldy already has a rib niggle (I had plans for the saved cash too)

So if Lloyd Meek and Matt Flynn both line up as sole rucks in R1 that could average 70 (or more) and be some of the season's best cash cows, do you forsake one of Gawn/Grundy to lock in the cash gen?

If so, who?
Pruess out for 8 weeks but how long is Darcy listed as out for? You would want 6 weeks+ minimum out of the one you have to field.

I am seriously looking at Gawn, Nankervis & Flynn combo, the extra cash saved from Grundy allowed Campbell upgrade to Heeney.

Nankervis is definitely a better sole ruck and the longer quarters should improve his scoring.

He is priced at 82.4 and averaged 98.2 in 2018, Soldo is out for the year and Callum Coleman-Jones is suspended until Round 6.

As for Mabior Chol he would need to find some aggression and attack on the ball, that is why he was dropped after the loss to Brisbane in the finals and I see him playing reserves until he improves that aspect of his game.

While Rounds 4 - 7 look daunting (Port, St Kilda, Melbourne, Footscray), he has played well against St Kilda and Port recently.

Nank is a decent option in a vacuum but not when Grundy is around.

Campbell 55-60 + Grundy 125-130
Heeney 90-95 + Nank 95-100

Campbell+Grundy 180-190 v Heeney + Nank 185-195. The fact there's 5 points in it and Grundy is a Captain option and Campbell could be better than 55-60 means that you just pick Grundy.

Would want to be awfully confident Nank can average 125+ in a month, early in the season, and that you'll have the guts to trade him out when he does as I just can't see him pushing 115+ for the season like he'd need to, to otherwise make sense as a pick. Or you're awfully confident that he can be 110 and that the one of Gawn/Grundy you're not starting is dropping to 115 or lower.

Just can't agree with the idea that there are enough trades and great cash cows to make up for taking poor cash cows for some job security. I think if you're shading Grundy or Gawn you just take the risk and back Flynn in. You're taking a risk so go for the reward at the position instead of taking a risk and then taking another risk that has very little likely reward.

I know ;)

Except they were solely against English and I think Stef was always a bit more competitive. That said, that was a few years and several injuries ago now.
Stef "kept" Grundy to 100 in 2019 despite losing the HOs 31-13, but I think a large part of that was because we were witches hats so everyone else gorged. Back in 2018 Grundy still scored 121 and 110 with Martin also scoring well (both 100+). But as noted, Stef last year was a very different kettle of fish. There's a chance they're more competitive this year but I'd be VCing Grundy with a fair bit of confidence personally.

Sticking Flynn at R2 really transforms your side.

Basically sets up your def & mids for at least the first 8 week of the season, would just have to focus on bring in Grundy and the fwds. So tempting. If only Marshall wasn't injured it would probably make this strategy viable.

Finding 500K to get to Grundy would be so tough during the season though.

Am I correct in saying that we won’t know if Flynn is named until after Gawn has started playing in round 1 ?

Makes it hard to go Flynn at that point then.
Maybe not officially but they basically confirmed it in the Swans practice game and as a debutant you'd imagine there will be a puff piece on it also.

Be shocked if we're not sure he's starting by the Friday.

Really intrigued by McEvoy next week, if we can get a nice clear indicator on him I think he can do what Marshall did. McEvoy as the #1 ruck has been a solid mid 90s guy for most of his career which is probably enough for the D6 who also provides ruck coverage.

Yea he would be a great option if we knew he was the number 1 ruck all season but I don't see that happening, can see him getting stuck in no mans land.

If picking Flynn at R2, what's the plan if he gets 'rested' for Mumford when GWS play Melbourne and Collingwood during rounds 3 and 4?
I'd be surprised if he got rested that early in the year to be honest, they could try a two-pronged attack, which would probably mean a terrible score. The issue is just that you leave yourself very vulnerable and more or less screwed if he goes down for any reason.

This is where Marshall would have been great back up and cover to swing to R2, but alas the gods would not permit it.

Could prove a pivotal risk vs reward selection, I'm pretty confident he'd average 75+ across the season because virtually all rucks do but he has two of the toughest opponents early on and an injury would almost ruin your year.

Man if Flynn just didn't have Collingwood and Melbourne back to back in week 3 and week 4 I would be very tempted to start him at R2 and gamble he stays in the team without getting hurt. I just reckon those two games are going to completely halt his cash generation at a pivotal moment.

The plan of starting him at R2 really has to be, hope he gets to 350k asap, hope Gawn has dropped 100k at the same stage and double downgrade the week before so you can get Gawn.
