And so the shades of grey begin. Vlaustin gets subbed out which means the doctor has determined that it will keep him out for at least 12 days. At the end of game presser the coach says “they don’t know what it is” and “we hope he gets up next week”.:unsure:

So what exactly is the role of the AFL chief medico during this week? To assess if he is right to play or; is it to assess if the club doctor made a defendable call on match day? Surely it should be latter but it is hard to see one doctor contradicting another.
There is such an easy fix. Mandate a minimum one week off. This system is just going to be exploited.

Was a few more outside 55/60 metre shots that I noticed with the man on the mark unable to move. I didn't think the Buddy arc would be in play but looks like it has been used alot more from around the league.
Was at the game last night and can confirm the Buddy arc was used by smart players taking shots from long range, particularly when kicking from the "right" side for their preferred foot. A Richmond player (can't remember who) did it in the first or second quarter kicking to the city end from the HFF. The ump was side on so did not call play on but from behind the arc was quite noticeable. Basically meant he didn't have to kick over the man on the mark at all and essentially improved his angle and was able to kick from closer range. A Carlton player did similar in the second half. McKay had a couple of set shots where he was on the "wrong side" for a left footer so it didn't assist him.

Sometimes coaches get a stupid idea in their heads and run with it - Cripps should never have been taken out the midfield in the second half, but Teague unfortunately has this dumb idea in his head that his best midfielder who has been running his guts out will somehow have the energy to magically morph into an (undersized) hit up forward.

Not sure whether not making this dumb change would have won Carlton the game in the end, but Cripps and Walsh were tearing it up at the stoppages and around the ground in the first half.
First game of he year. It’s a long season. Cripps at M8 after the byes will be good. Still think he goes 105+. Game is moving faster now with less stoppages, will need a few weeks to get up to speed. Made some good tackles which give me confidence.

He mightn't score great being stuck in Adelaide's forward line but he should be a lock in his position, we just sacked the guy who had that role before him. Lachie Murphy will be putting pressure on for it if he's not named but outside of that, it's probably someone like Newchurch (who looks to be an exciting prospect but I doubt he's ready) and any young midfield prospect we wish to ruin. All in all, I think he's got solid JS, just in the wrong forward line but just nice to have the scores turn over sometimes.
Hoping the crows opposition are 8 goals up into the last quarter and oppositions DEF relaxes a bit and Rowe can show up for a few sneaky goals.

Any patterns or concerns that people may have picked up on tonight?
Stoppages looked down, wasn’t as much kick, mark as I thought there may have been, I reckon tomorrow night that may change.
Less stoppages has me worried over Gawns output. Will asses after round 2.

Great Game....

I think GG did mention that Downie would be the medical sub?
Can't remember clearly but that's how I remembered it ha!
Yeah as of yesterday lunch time I’d been told Downie would be the sub and that Brockman and Koschitzke were in the 22.

Will be interesting to see what happens here.

Trying to follow up again now, but suspect by the time I get any further word that the Hawks might’ve released the actual news given the players will likely be training at the moment.

Dusty - Goat. every time he touched it Carlton were screwed. The only good thing to come from this as a non owner is the fact oppositions cannot let him run free, its suicide. Gary Lyon suggested double teaming him, he cannot be allowed to get 1 on 1s up forward. Mildly concerned not having him. We know he has quiet games but something feels a bit different with him this year.

Short - Eh, okay game. More scoring this season = more kick outs. Tagged for the most part and got 100. Probs goes 10 points less with Houlu, for only 510k I am okay. He demands the ball a lot which is great.

Dow - Okay at times, but saw lots of bad signs. TOG, disappearing, bad kicking, liked some of his stoppage work though. At 200k it doesnt really matter too much, just needs to play.

Doch - Role didnt look great at times, but freed up a bit in the 3rd. Should score okay, durability long term is my main issue with him.

Walsh - Machine, looks like he's continued on last years form but with more CBAS. Endurance attribute putting in work.

Cripps - Similar Cripps to previous 1.5 years, maybe a tad better. Possible endurance issues. Just looked a bit sluggish and second to the ball a lot in the second half.
With the faster game and tiring DEF lines Dusty going to be real dangerous late in he 3rd quarter and final term.
