GWS vs Saints
General - The wet weather was very obvious in this one, looked more like football and less like aerial ping pong that most of the other games have been, was actually good to watch other than some of the horrific "dangerous tackle" BS the umpires were frothing on, I hate that rule. As a result the rucks actually scored and we had a lot of hitouts and stoppages.
Giants - Same problems as last year, when they lose the clearances and get into their defensive 50 it's just a matter of time before they concede a goal, no composure or structure when rebounding and so many mistakes. Looked good in the reverse, their forward press was good.
Taranto - He butchered it even by his standards but lucky in the wet that didn't stand out nearly as much as it normally would and the contested stuff helped him keep it even, he also timed his goal well. Solid start, probably nothing to move the needle either way for those who picked or didn't.
Perryman - The intercept defender, so many intercept marks. Shame he's a mid only this year.
Flynn - Stud. He was legit great, Hunter was competitive but something must have happened to him as they went for McKernan in the 2nd half and he got abused like the non-ruck he is. Ruckwork was excellent but it's the around the ground stuff where he really stacked up. Ankle injury a worry, the kind you play through and then struggle to get up the next week with.
Kelly - Not the conditions for him, was solid but went missing in the 4th and his bad kicking held him back well but he looks good and look forward to seeing what he can do in the dry.
Ward - Stupid mistake at the end where he got done for illegal disposal in a spot on call for mine (he had prior and threw the ball, tackle or not it's illegal disposal) but the decision to try and waddle past Butler in an act of pure indecisiveness was just odd, he was great otherwise, definitely turning back the clock a bit. Weather suited him to a tee.
Coniglio - Tagging Steele early, I didn't notice it in the 2nd half when Steele went missing so it was an odd one. Same sort of role otherwise.
Hopper - Solid hitout for him, conditions obviously suit and he was really good.
Cumming - Took almost all the kick-ins, was solid but made some bad mistakes that cost them significantly.
Haynes - What a mare of a game, was shocked he had a positive ratio, all I can guess is that all his mistakes managed to go down to "wet weather" and not clanger because the amount of horrible fumbles and drops he had that cost goals must have been close to double figures. That he can play that badly and score that well is a pretty good sign. Did have some kind of back issue though late so wouldn't be targeting him!
Greene - Solid game, nothing special but a good baseline, looks in ripping shape but he's their only real forward so that's a worry as all the attention will go to stopping him.
Ash - Was solid, not enough of it.
Green - Role is no good, playing forward with midfield stints.
Bruhn - Role as bad as advertised, his ratio was miraculous to be honest, timed his couple of touches really well to get maximum value for them, had no impact on the contest though and will need to do more to hold his spot, worrying sign is that Hill did far more so he's the last picked right now.
Saints - Really strong win by them, actually similar to the Giants only able to actually get it out of defensive 50 with some pace and get it over the back and to the other end to change field position.
Billings - Really solid game, roaming a wing and pushing forward aggressively.
Clark - Really solid role, defensive midfielder basically, combining his skills well. Wet weather suits him very well and he made the most of it. Be interesting to see what they do if Crouch, Hanners and Jones are all available at some point.
Bytel - Really solid from him. Doing what he can to stay in.
Steele - First half was epic while copping a tag and then seemed to just lose interest once he wasn't having to tag. Early contender for tackle of the year on Hopper even if the umpires went the old "too hard, must be illegal" BS that they seem to want to do, have I mentioned I hate that rule. Not sure how to read that game really, he should have been better in the wet.
Higgins - Solid but didn't score well enough.
Highmore - Really solid, was odd the more he seemed to be involved from what I could see, the worst his ratio got. Didn't do a lot wrong in tough conditions.
Hunter - Not sure what happened here, his first half was really solid and then he barely rucked from there on, great for Flynn but obviously not good for Hunter, worse is that they won despite getting smoked in the ruck. Still be surprised if they drop him, especially with Gawn to come next week.
