Not sure if he's been brought up yet - but is it worth looking at Troy Menzel at 231k?
With Betts gone, could there be more opportunity there for him and possibly avoid the vest? Hasn't set the world on fire with his scores and only going into his 2nd season, but could possibly be a decent stepping stone. Did have massive wraps on him when he was drafted too.

From fb page -

Good news for Crows fans with Taylor Walker ($300k) making huge progress in his rehabilitation from a knee reconstruction. Adelaide expect him to be back in action by May at the latest.

Collingwood recruit, Patrick Karnezis ($230k) is facing a delayed start and is currently on light duties while he manages his osteitis pubis.

I looked at him but then decided that the awkward price range was too awkward lol.

Yeah that's true, I've now rethought his selection and reckon it would be too much risk to include him - especially when you have Fasolo, Lamb and even Clark around the same price. Cheers for the input mate :)

Been mentioned in the DEF thread but it is probably more relevant in his SC position, Dustin Martin to maybe play in defence...

RICHMOND is preparing Dustin Martin for a possible role in the backline this season as the club looks to capitalise on his versatility under new interchange restrictions.

Martin, who has kicked 79 goals in the past three seasons and averaged 23 possessions, has developed into an offensive weapon in the midfield and forward line.

However, coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers wanted to explore his attacking traits across half-back, with the 22-year-old training with the club's defenders this summer.

"He's shown the ability to play forward and through the midfield … probably the one area we haven't really tinkered with a little bit is his ability to play down back," Hardwick told AFL.com.au.

"That's something we're looking at this year. He's a very capable player at creating scores.

"If we can get the ball in his hands through that half-back zone, it's a very damaging scoring zone, so we feel as if we'll certainly score from that."

Hardwick said versatility would become even more important for midfielders in 2014 with interchange rotations capped at 120.

Hampson right at home at Tigerland

Defender Alex Rance said the Tigers had successfully used midfielders Brett Deledio and Trent Cotchin in the backline at times, and he was confident Martin would make the transition if required.

"He's trained really well there this pre-season so I'd love to see him down there because he's an amazing kick and decision-maker," Rance said.

"I think it's just getting that defensive element into his game and just getting good decision-makers with the ball.

"I think a lot of clubs are going through that sort of process now of having good decision-makers coming out of the backline … Hawthorn have got Sam Mitchell."

In attack, the Tigers will again focus on being unpredictable, according to Hardwick, with Jack Riewoldt in line to play a number of different roles.

The two-time Coleman medallist kicked 58 goals last season – his lowest return since 2009 – but was hailed for his unselfish play and ability to set up goals.

"We're looking to constantly challenge the opposition with our forward set-up, so Jack at stages will be deep, he'll certainly be up the ground and he might play some various other roles for us," Hardwick said.

"You look at a lot of forward lines - they're very flexible these days, and that's probably what we're after and got a little bit last year."

The Tigers forward line will be made more flexible by the recruitment of former Carlton big man Shaun Hampson, who has enjoyed a faultless pre-season.

Hardwick said the 25-year-old would not only add marking power in attack, but would allow ruck partner Ivan Maric to rotate forward and Ty Vickery to play as a permanent goalkicker.

"Those taller players we're very excited about," Hardwick said.

"We feel as though we can develop [Vickery] as a forward and he's capable of kicking 60 goals a year, which is exciting for us.

"Last year he obviously played 30-40 per cent through the ruck and he plays that role really well.

"Ivan is another player who, through the middle of the ground he's great, but he's also got the capability of marking the ball and kicking goals."

What do people think the likely impact will be if Martin plays more time off half back? Improved / lower scores? What about reliability?
If he became the main avenue out of Deffence and rotated through the midfield, presumably scores and reliability would improve?

Agreed for the future, not sure what it would mean for this year though. Not yet anyway. He has enough talent and skill for it to not effect his scores, just have to wait and see i guess.

I reckon we need to wait and see what his role is during NAB Challenge coz this could just be 'all talk'.
Honestly though I don't reckon it will have too much of an effect on his scores for the reasons listed you you guys above :)

I've had Martin the last 2 years and stoked with his improvement last year, but I don't think it would do him (i.e his SC scoring) any harm to have someone accountable for if they do switch him down back every now and then. Even last year, seemed to struggle just a little at times when pushed into the forward line. I say that only from the perspective I had unrealistic expectations of the ball constantly being put into his hands. But from the POV of natural progression, I'm with Johno and the others, I would be expecting big things from Slim this season regardless of whether it's the forward line or back line that he's switched to during the course of a game.

Anyone know how Nathan Bock is going with his pre season. Is he over his leg problems and if so, is he still under investigation from ASADA for that injection ?

From the age 2 days ago..
Nathan Bock had the rod removed from the leg he broke last year and is still having his workloads monitored to ensure there are no complications.

Also no news about ASADA that I could find.

Not sure about anyone else, but I am really struggling with my forward structure this year. I have the usual suspects in Dangerfield and Martin locked, plus Buddy but I'm not even 100% with him. At the moment I am running with 3 rookies on field but it looks very thin. Have been toying with Dixon as well purely as a back up for Sandi. Really hoping some rookie gems present themselves in the preseason.

I like the Danger, Martin, Franklin, Pav set up with rookies (reckon it's gonna be a very popular setup). No one else really floats my boat tbh, except maybe Rooey and Petrie (but I wouldn't start either).

I like the first three but not sold on Pav just yet. But agree, it is going to be a very popular set up this year.

Yeah thats what I am sort of working with after some time spent today looking at my side.
Working on going with Danger, Dusty and Buddy but stumbling at F4. Currently looking at Pavlich, NRoo or Parker, or go with 3 on field rookies.

NAB Challenge starts soon so just write that book or storyboard some scenes from your film or replace that car engine or build that extension or whatever you need to do to stop torturing yourself over impossible decisions before you even see a rookie even play already, geez.

Might be hard finding 5 forward rookies that people are 100% happy/confident in - clarke, bock, hogan, billings, boyd, rohan I don't trust.
