I have a feeling that last years shorter season and extra trades is going to derail a lot of people this year. Seeing talk of trading blokes like Clark (BE 24 vs 70 avg) and Campbell (BE -12 vs 67 avg) to get a bubble rookie in and then pairing this with a sideways premium trade.

Cash gen looks tricky early so using up trades for minimal net gain and so early in the season feels like a recipe for disaster, and sideways rookie trading can be just as disastrous as sideways premium trading!

Using the safe rule of a rookie being maxed when their BE and avg align, the only one who looks ready is Kosi (who looks done for multiple reasons) but the others still have cash to make and only need a spike score to get a nice kick along - and those spike games aren't outside the realms of possibility. Rowe and Cox both have a monster rookie score that is at odds with their previous 2 games, and 3 games is a small sample size!

I'd also consider the relative impact of a donut this season. Unless you've been luckier than most, everyone has had a 22nd (and in some cases, 21st) players score in the 20's. Using trades to avoid a donut is not too impactful if that means you just end up with a disappointing rookie on field on another line.

Every circumstance will be different, for some the trades are no brainers but for others it might be a case of getting the sugar rush of hitting that red T.. but just keep in mind it's a long season that is only 3 rounds in!
I tend to agree. There are legitimate reasons to be executing some of these trades, but overall it feels like we are erring a bit sideways, even here on SCS.

For anyone itching to trade, but trying to resist the temptation, the IPL season starts this week, and gives you plenty of opportunities for guilt-free sideways trading! 🙂

I can't see a way other that trading Daniel or Stewart but would love it if someone can tell me another way.

See no reason to trade in Ridley given your team. Huge cash generation coming your way. Riddles at best will even out around 600-630K. Hang tough really no different to past years when people didn't start Lloyd. Except this year you have got all the quick cash gen happening so you will be able to trade up to Ridley before the byes if you want to.

Short has been good so far, got plenty of the ball against Sydney was just wasteful with his disposal, I don't think Richmond's backline has been under that much pressure for a while. Ridley looks awesome but Short is scoring at premo defender level as well (albeit not at Ridley's super premo level).
Sorry guys, mixed up Sharp and Short. Trading Short would definitely be insane.

Heath Chapman

$148,800, Def

Average: 64, Breakeven: -41

KFC SuperCoaches are well aware of the rookie crisis in defence and this young Docker looks to be the answer to our prayers.

Chapman was a shining light on a disappointing afternoon for the Dockers, gathering 18 disposals, eight intercept possessions, six tackles, five rebound 50s and 86 KFC SuperCoach points - an improvement from his 42 points on debut.

The first-round draftee was a prominent interceptor at under-18 level last year, averaging 10.5 intercepts, 4.6 intercept marks and a whopping 132 points per game in the WAFL Colts, providing an attacking springboard for attack.

His aggressive play coupled with Fremantle’s mounting injury list makes him a high-quality option in a line where we are bereft of rookies.

Will you all STOP trying to bring in Ridley! You will break him
But seriously do you really believe he is going to keep going at this rate? Agreed the ball is going to be down there a lot this season. I would think that most Essendon fans would agree that we were not expecting to beat St Kilda and if we did certainly not in the canter it turned into.
We play Sydney this week in Sydney and as much as I hope and wish I expect Sydney to be 4-0.
He scored high (135?) in a big loss against Port.

I am getting Ridley, so annoyed at myself taking Kelly over him... correction trade required:-

Jordan Ridley (Ess)

$586,000, Def

Ridley has been on the field for all but 10 minutes of the Bombers’ first three matches – he, simply, has had more time to score than most. But he doesn’t really need any extra help. After averaging 102 points per game in a breakout 2020 season, the reigning best-and-fairest has taken his game to another level this year, posting scores of 125, 136 and 147 to start 2021. Ridley has had more of the footy than any other defender in the game, has hit the target with 78 or his 88 disposals, leads the competition for rebound 50s and rates elite for intercepts, spoils and metres gained. Oh, and he takes the kick-ins. There’s not much to dislike, here. This could be the last round to grab the runaway KFC SuperCoach leader in defence for less than $600k.

Wow

Must have I think, very good chance he is the number 1 SC defender this year/ top 3 for sure.

Possibly:

Sharp> Chapman/Parks
Clark > Ridley

Edit: Sharp not Short. Sorry gots my Sh’s mixed up.
Just to clear this up.
More context: I’ve strategically saved close to 400k till now for just this sort of situation and with the back line rookies looking meek, it’s an area I need to address.

At the moment I’ve got: Laird, Daniel, Short, Stewart, Clark, Kozi, Highmore, Sharp.

Ridley and Lloyd would be my targets for final two defence posts. Clark would be good to keep for a bit longer, but doubt Ridley will be this cheap again. I didn’t pick him at the start coz I didn’t know what Essendon were going to look like, but it doesn’t seem to matter. He just does his thing win lose or draw.

I’ve got Cripps too, but Def seems at the moment the most straight forward line to deal with. Mids are a bit of a raffle. Want to see how they settle down. Cripps virtually straight to Guthrie seems tempting... but bound to be wrong. Need to resist sideways trading... but even this idea might need reviewing this year, with the way the rookies are looking.

I think you had Young as well right?
If you had to trade Young out...would it be to Chapman or Impey?
I'm struggling to decide. And also considering to hold Young as I'm worried about burning yet another trade after using 2 trades this past week (one to get Jordan in and another to get Short in which was to replace the injured Rowell).

The issue I have this week is I have the risk of copping a donut due to Flyntereek.

Have really wanted to use some of my 325k to go from Dow to Tex, but am vary wary I will need Grundy ASAP. Tex could go massive the next two weeks with North and Freo... but Grundy also has a very good run coming up.

One option I do have is Dow to Tex, and hold the 2nd and IF needed, Meek to Traecy. Was considering going early on Waterman, but after some comments from @Santoz am now second-guessing if I should. Annoyed after missing Impey, but for Dow, think I either go up to Tex, or down to a rookie
I think the worst thing you could do is hold Dow. If going early on Waterman works best for you then go for it, but don't expect him to average 80 while he's in your side.

Hopefully I'm wrong as if he punches out 80 this week I'll be jumping on too.

I am going Chapman as my fwd line is fine (Impey is a great option for those needing a cheap fwd) - with Young injured & having Clark/Kosi/Highmore/Sharp filling my last 4 defender spots, my defence is very shaky. Chapman for mine looks like the best rookie defender we will have in the short term, his style of play is suited to SC scoring - quite noticeable how much more comfortable he looked at AFL level in the 2nd half of the game on the weekend v Carlton. Ridley being the standout premium defender this year at under 600k means he is a must have for my team with my structure. I have watched Jelly over the last 3 weeks & he just isn't getting the midfield time (CBAs are very low)/ him getting parked in the fwd line on the weekend even with Coniglio & De Boer injured was the final straw for mine. High BE of 152 so set to lose a heap of cash & I can't see him being a top 8 midfielder given how Clueless Cameron uses him.

After a bit more thinking and a coffee to get my brain in order, lll prob go.

Cripps > Impey via dpp
Kozi > Ridley

Cripps - the whole “playing injured” scares me, akin to Neale owners.. could always pick him up later, cheaper if he improves.

Impey - Looks to be the best SC friendly role out of Jiath, him and Tex

Ridley - looking like a must have, so happy to bring him in for under 600k.

I’ll prob then sit on my trades for a couple of weeks to gain some more intel on my upgrade targets, as not many are taking my fancy so far 🤷🏼‍♂️🤔

Hoping not to make any this week as have used 4.
Potential issue - Sharp, Kosi, Highmore and young (injured) all in defence. Need at least 1 to play or I will nr coping a donut, thou the scores some have put out im not sure id lose much compared to burning a trade.

My current set up with 27 trades and $193k:
Laird, Stewart, Howe, J. Clark, Cox, Highmore - Kosi, Sharp

Oliver, Bont, Titch, Zerrett, Adams, Cripps, Guldden, Jordon - Powell, Berry, McNeil

Gawn, Flynn - Hunter

Dunkley, De Goey, Tex, Ziebell, Daniher, Campbell - Brockman, Scott

Option 1: When Jamie Elliott went down last week I wanted to move JDG as I knew his FWD time would increase but was stuck with other moves I had to make, I can get him to Ridley this week though shuffling either Cox to the FWDs or McNeil -> FWD, Sharp -> Mid.

Option 2 is going simply Clark to Ridley and De Goey to Impey. It's a bit "sideways" but if Impey can generate more cash thank Clark from here on out it's probably a win? Ridley looks a lock for a top 3 DEF spot while JDG will struggle until he can push back into the middle for the pies.

Option 3 is hold, knowing I'll have to wait on Ridley's price to come back down but at least save some trades for the back end of the season.

Any thoughts/advise would be hugely welcomed!

Really appreciate all the feedback on this guys, probably changed my mind 3 times in the one page.

With nailing most of the rookies and mid pricers I think I'll need less rookie trades to get to my final team so am still leaning towards the sideways Daniel to Ridley trade this week.
