511k for a player with four consecutive seasons averaging 113+, has a 205SC on his resume, had 23 CBAs last week and now a 64 BE, and he has the preferred bye for a mid, and everyone's still tiptoeing around the potential risks. What do you want, a court order that he has to be played in the mids and isn't allowed to get hit? Youse have all got greedy.

Agree with this but with both role risk (Cogs and De Boar to return) and injury risk (no explanation needed for him), the downside almost evens out all the things you mentioned.

Great post as usual GFB.

I can definitely see a world where I trade out a 170k Highmore if it saves a donut and there's a rookie I want and I prefer it to other options. But the starting point has to be that trading a 170k is highly undesirable.

I think the main thing is giving your team a chance to succeed, rather than locking in failures. Especially approaching the byes, I think people can fixate on getting the 'perfect' team, with no deadwood, which holds them back from continuing to improve it in ways that are more important - specifically, capitalising on good discounted premos and getting your team complete as quickly as possible.

Definitely how I see it. I've had him from the start though :(

One of the bummers when you have someone like him go through a down patch is you know everyone gets to jump on cheap, so it's good if they don't and they miss the upswing. Well, let's hope it's a real upswing. Maybe I'm just getting cocky.

Mansell hasn't been named in Tigs VFL so could actually survive another week.
Didn't like his chances, but should be better to give him another week with a BE of 14 instead of Kosi with a BE of 60.
Unless he's out altogether due to the headknock from Selwood. He didn't look right after that.

The only reason you shouldn't be bringing him in this week is because you are instead bringing in the 2018 brownlow medallist.

I have just been reminded by an eminent SC player that Josh Kelly has a terrible injury history, has been playing forward for most of the year, can't kick, can't bowl and can't field, and is a terrible trade in. Please disregard my previous posts on the matter.

Said eminent SC player had also suggested in the preseason I remind everyone that Taranto similarly can’t kick, can’t bowl and can’t field (I wasn’t as obliging as stephen however!)

I started him too, as I have 3/4 of the past years, every time he’s been available from round 1, but in retrospect he really has never been a good starting pick and is someone to avoid starting in the future.

2018 - started the year with his groin injury, played 3 weeks and then missed 6. Came on strong mid year and then got concussed.

2019 - missed the start of the year, built up form, started to dominate and then got injured again

2020- started slow-ish, missed 1 game early and then built up high level form and got concussed.

2021 - started slow and building up form now

This year might be a little different with a role change but I think there’s enough evidence to suggest it takes his body a while to acclimatise to the season, in future I’ll be aiming to get him as an early trade in target, rather than getting lured in at the start by his ostensible ceiling and majestic aesthetics

Yes I too am prone to being lured by players with majestic aesthetics. (I am currently considering trading in Rozee this week, which obviously speaks to this unhealthy habit).

Normally I have J Kelly in the basket with Fyfe, where you start them if they're discounted and don't if they're not. (Fyfe has now moved to the bucket of players old enough to purposefully ignore until they get forward status). But this year I got lured by the fabled perfect preseason and the dearth of other premo options that I liked.

I suspect there's something in what you say about his starts to the year and it might be part of the reason for the way they've played him so far. Who knows. I think I am less inclined to assume stupidity on the part of coaches than some others, and that there is probably stuff going on that we don't know about that motivates strategic decisions we otherwise think are strange, and that they will sort themselves out when the time is right. Though possibly I'm just naive.

Think we all look for different things in players we pick and it's good to play to your strengths. I know I chase ceiling and value. I want players who hurt non-owners. As a result I don't pay as much attention to durability and consistency as I probably should. But as long as you're aware of your blindspots and prejudices and work to hedge against them I think it's okay.

If I didn't have him I couldn't press the trade button hard enough. (Although would probably take Titch first, if I didn't have him either).
