I honestly don't really get why Flynn hasn't had at least one more game. OK, you have Mumford ahead of him in the pecking order but Flynn hasn't looked bad, and in patches has actually looked very good. Maybe there's something he's not doing that hasn't come up on the footage I've watched of him that has kept him out of the side, maybe its the ankle. Mumford clearly should not have played last week because he was quite poor in the half a game I watched.
It's because Mummy has been playing out of his skin to a level nobody ever expected, given that he'd almost unanimously been retired by every expert, commentator and football follower after last year.

I think their plan coming in was playing Flynn and/or Briggs and having Mummy spell them for a week or two when it looked like they needed a rest, but what it turned into was Flynn/Briggs coming in to spell Mummy because he's just been that good.

It's a pattern I'd anticipate will continue, although GWS with the early bye might also decide to rest Mummy for the next couple of weeks as well to give him 4 weeks in which to freshen up for the run home.

I'd suggest that if the ducks line up for GWS, we won't see Mummy after the byes.

Pretty sure the plan was for Preuss to be No1 ruck with Flynn & Briggs the apprentices under Mummy's tutalige, getting a game here & there to get experience.
With Preuss due to come back in about 4 weeks, you'd think they would go back to plan A

Of course Preuss is the circuit breaker in the ruck situation at GWS, but given he's had a shoulder reco I'm not counting any chickens before they hatch there. If anything Mummy's form given them reason to be a bit more conservative with Preuss' timeline for a return at AFL level.

Really having a tough time trying to decide which double down rookies to pick this week...
Seems like the general consensus is:
  1. Poulter
  2. RCD
  3. Byrnes
For mine...

1. RCD - Best role/scoring potential. Job security the next few weeks is very decent but long term definitely could be an issue but he's getting as good a chance as he can to win and hold a spot. Worst bye of the 3 is the other big negative on him.

2. Poulter - DPP has legitimate value, especially as the likes of Scott and a few other DPP guys are heading out. Role is solid but there is the Bucks factor where he could end up in worse positions really quickly, Macrae went from a great quarter on ball to forward pocket for example. Job security is on that earn it level, keep playing well and he keeps playing. Ideal bye.

3. Byrnes - Role is similar to Poulter, a pretty neutral wing role, last week was more extra midfielder, 1st game more defensive winger. Think he holds the spot as long as the Hill at HB experiment keeps working and paying dividends but that could end at any point. He's played well and scored well and it's a decent role. Also has ideal bye.

I think they're all pretty even though and probably the bye/DPP factors should be important tie breakers for most. RCD has the most explosive upside over the next couple of weeks but also the biggest obstacles to a long term spot.

Does the 10 week injury to Zak Jones change your thinking in any way in terms of Byrnes JS?

My predicament is I already have RCD so do I need all 3 with a double downgrade this week or bring in a Mills/Lloyd and hope for an early upgrade on many.

Unfortunately I'd rather look at Highmore tonight first.

I'm going to pass on RCD - I think its a pretty big decision whether to go with him or not this week (for those that don't already have him).

There's always a lot of recency bias with my takes because I try to watch the games and its always the most recent game which is fresh in my mind. I think there's a big chance he'll struggle vs the seasoned GWS mids just based off of last weeks game, but he was actually good the week before against another good mid group in Footscray's, so who knows at this stage, really. The JS thing I get but its really only secure if you perform adequately. I prefer Poulter over him obviously.

Can't look at Highmore without Byrnes also going to the wayside.

Not sure the BE on the other two but would think they can wait a week, there is nothing on the horizon for the rookies, RCD, Byrnes, Highmore, Poulter and Sweet all look comfortably better than anything on the horizon, which is at least 2 weeks away best case.

Best rookies on the horizon right now are probably L. Jones and Macrae and are the only ones plausible next week

I really just base it on the Freo game compared to his previous: whatever you can say about him quelling Fyfe (who still had 27 touches with much more uncustomary efficiency) DevR looked physically a bit beaten down and his output spoke to that. I also think Ely Smith probably will get a look in with the ones at some stage in coming weeks and DevR will likely (for me) be the first out if that's the case. Mathieson was clearly a better player than DevR on the weekend, despite his deficiencies.
Dev was lining up at contests not even facing the ball, he was facing his man. He clearly had a job he was assigned to do.

I also wouldn't hold your breath on Ely.

Low possession goal kicker in first two games, has a hard run coming up and plays in a side which can implode. Looks a low odds rookie to bring in.
Other seriously high risk factor is that Martin and Murphy are the two guys he's currently holding out of the side and C. Curnow is also edging closer it would seem.

Having said that, I was genuinely impressed with both his games. I'd actually be perfectly happy targeting him next week if that's how it had fallen but I just don't see the case over RCD and Poulter. His role is worse, JS no better, no DPP and his bye is worse than Poulter.

Really the only reason I'd go him is if I've only got two forwards to trade and I can't get RCD in any way, shape or form.

Who to trade for RCD this week, Berry or Brockman. I am keener on Berry as more likely to keep role. Brockman looks like a donut during the byes and I would prefer to move him on. I thought Brockman may have been a chance for in this week. Traded Warner to Poulter. So my forwards are down at the moment with Bolton on the bench.
