Superstar free agents Patrick Cripps and Marcus Bontempelli are now off the market, according to rival clubs.

Foxfooty.com.au understands Carlton is on the verge of locking Cripps into a new deal – likely four years - that will keep West Coast at bay, while Bontempelli won’t be leaving Whitten Oval.

The Western Bulldogs captain will not sign a contract anywhere near the length of Christian Petracca’s seven-season arrangement, with industry sources predicting Bontempelli’s deal to be as short as three years but definitely no more than five.

Both players are managed by the same agency – TLA – which has remained tight-lipped throughout the negotiation process.

The Dogs and Blues both say nothing is set in stone, but it’s understood Cripps and Bontempelli won’t be going anywhere and it’s only the finer details that are being worked through behind closed doors.

A four-year contract for Cripps would see him turn 30 as the last season of his deal begins. Crucially, it provides stability for the Blues in the short to medium term as they look to lock in Harry McKay (this year) and Sam Walsh (out of contract at the end of 2022) in the coming months.

The Dogs always remained supremely confident Bontempelli, whose stocks have risen in 2021, would remain loyal.

When these two re-signings are announced, it will sharpen the focus on other high profile free agents Zach Merrett, Josh Kelly and to a lesser extent Jack Billings.

Like Bontempelli and Cripps, Merrett is also looked after by TLA. Kelly and Billings are key members of the Connors Sports Management stable.
In other contract news, Jack Riewoldt is poised to play on into a 16th season in 2022.

His agent Liam Pickering has opened discussions with the Tigers on a new deal that, once confirmed, could see the veteran become the second-most capped Tiger of all time.

Riewoldt is eight matches away from the 300 milestone, which should come later in the season.

Though his chances of reaching Kevin Bartlett’s 403-game club record remain remote, surpassing Jack Dyer on 311 would be within reach if he plays on.

Foxfooty.com.au understands discussions are at a preliminary stage but both parties have shown a willingness to continue beyond 2021.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast has locked in Jeremy Sharp to a fresh deal that will keep him at the Suns until at least the end of 2023.

Sharp has not been seen at AFL level this year, but it hasn’t stopped the Suns hunting his signature to keep him away from West Australian clubs.

It‘s understood his commitment will be made official in the coming weeks.

Sharp was selected with Pick 27 in the 2019 National Draft.

What's 'farcical' about it Prof ?

One of the most involved and longest serving recruiting bosses takes a short break, and returns within a couple of weeks refreshed.

And Selwood, one of the highest regarded up and comers in that space has probably been specifically head hunted by the Pies and offered significant coin to take on the role would be my assumption.

Well I'm not privy to what conversations go on in the background there, but it seemed like Wells was told of changes that he may not habe been happy about. Obviously taken time off to consider his future? Or was he told he's no longer required. Then with the news of Selwood to the Pies, it appears Geelong has back flipped on their decision. Anyway, a lot of guesswork and hypertheticals there, so that was my take, could be completely wrong.

Didn't the Pies get Wright as their recruiting boss this year?

General Manager of Football for Wright.

Ned Guy is the departing list manager at Collingwood.

Troy Selwood is expected to take up a role combining recruiting and list management at the Pies.

No doubt Wright has the pulling power to mould a footy department the way he wants.
