Think I read Crawley is averaging 11.00 in the last 12 months , so why oh why is he one of the back up batsmen ?
8 batsman (incl Bairstow & Buttler) in the Squad who pretty much average < than 35 in Test cricket
Said before the series started Root needs to be scoring double hundreds every Test just to be competitive.
This made me wonder what I was missing on Bairstow - over 4,000 Test runs, why wouldn’t he be in the side?
He averages 34 … and has only had one “above average” year, despite playing for nearly a decade!

49 tests as the keeper , this has been their problem though trying to play one of Bairstow or Buttler as a specialist bat (when most experts say Foakes should keep and averages similar to them both in any case)
Bairstow obviously has the ability (6 Test centuries) average is acceptable if he is the keeper , not up to Test level though as a batsman

Marcus Harris will open for Australia in the Boxing Day Test after Justin Langer paid the support from his career forward and backed his man.
Harris's spot in Australia's Ashes team has been in the spotlight since his latest poor return in Adelaide, making for 14 dismissals since he last reached 50.
Figures this week showed the his Test average of 22.19 is the lowest of all regular Australian openers in 128 years, headed into the third Vodafone Test.
But just as the likes of Steve Waugh and others did when Langer's spot was under pressure during his own playing career, Australia's coach will stand by his opener.
"He'll play in the Test, no worries about that," Langer said on Thursday.
"This is his home ground. He's played a lot at the MCG.
"He hasn't made the runs he'd like to so far, but he dominates domestic cricket.
"So he knows that he knows how to play.
"He's a fantastic bloke around the squad ... And we know he's a very good player.
"For him and for us we're hoping he plays well and gets a good partnership with Davey Warner in this Boxing Day Test match."
Harris is a very lucky boy... I do hope he capitalises in the 3rd test but have my doubts with his technical issues.

Blackcaps spinner Ajaz Patel has been sensationally dropped for New Zealand’s home Test series against Bangladesh despite making cricketing history in his last outing.
Patel famously became the third bowler in history to take 10 wickets in a Test innings in his last match against India in Mumbai.
The left arm tweaker ended the game with 14 wickets to his name, but that didn’t prove enough for New Zealand’s selectors with coach Gary Stead saying his non-selection was a “horses-for-courses” decision.
“You do feel for Ajaz after his record-breaking display in India,” Stead said via a statement.
“However, we’ve always applied a horses-for-courses selection policy and believe the players selected best fit the way we want to take on Bangladesh here at home.”
All-rounder Rachin Ravindra will fill the side’s spinning duties, and Stead said that selection allows the team balance with a mainly seaming attack.
“We feel having both Rachin and Daryl in the squad gives us a nice balance and the ability to pick a side best suited to the conditions we expect,” he said.
The two-Test series against Bangladesh begins on January 1, 2022 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui before Christchurch’s Hagley Oval holds the second fixture.
Captain Kane Williamson misses the series with injury while Tom Latham takes the reins as skipper.
