Have loved Test cricket for 45+ years , but finding it extremely difficult maintaining interest
Same here. Think we have been brainwashed by T20.
Teams are poor though. If you compare these players to Ashes series down
the years they would be lucky to get in the top 100 of each team.
Only Smith/Root/Anderson/Stokes would make a shortlist.

I think you would find a few more than that.

Australia - Cummins , Smith , Warner

Mind you I wouldn't be picking Cummins over Gillespie , Johnson , Lee , Lillee , McDermott , McGrath etc

Warner v Langer to open with Hayden

Can't pick Labuschagne ahead of the likes of Boon , Border , Chappell , Ponting , Waugh's etc

GOAT is not playing ahead of Warne

England - Anderson (in England) , Root ✓

Would pick Botham over Stokes every day of the week

Haven't got back before the 70's

Similar to what I was thinking. I honestly rate Cummins in similar range to some of those other bowlers, but probably a bit different skill set to a few of them. Hard to compare, as some rely more on pace, others on line and length.

Labuschagne might get to that sort of level, if he can keep the current form he is in, but agree he's not at that level yet - more of a Mike Hussey type player who had a massive average to start his career, but didn't maintain it.

So disregarding Bradman who would we have at 4 in a all time Australian XI

GS Chappell or Smith ?
Didn't see enough of Chappell to rate this fairly. Smith in form is very good though. I know Chappell was always pretty much the unanimous selection here, so it would be interesting to see the opinions of those familiar with both as to who they would select nowadays.

I would pick Cummins over all except Lillee & McGrath - absolute superstar.

Hard to pick a all time XI , I couldn't leave Lillee or McGrath out and think Gillespie's career has been seriously under rated.

Totally agree though a lot are different.

If I pick Ponting @ 3 and Chappell @ 4 , I have no room for Smudge.

Need to slot Boonie in somewhere so he would open with Haydos.

AB @ 5 , Tugga @ 6

So :-

Boon
Hayden
Ponting
Chappell , G
Border
Waugh , S
Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
Gillespie
McGrath

Then if you go back further Bradman , Harvey , Lindwall , Miller , Morris , Trumper etc would all probably get a spot so half of the modern day greats would miss out.

I hated Chappell with a passion , respected him as a batsman.

Classical batsman to watch when he got going , just used to drive effortlessly through the "V"

Cover drive , hook & pull (no helmets)
