SEN Chief reporter Sam Edmund has caught wind of a Carlton rookie who lit it up in the Blues' intraclub.

Carlton underwent some match practice on Friday morning, Edmund hearing reports of numerous players impressing.




“I got a message from my spy down there at the Blues who told me Sam Walsh and Patrick Cripps are doing as they please down there, Lochie O’Brien has kicked a nice goal, there’s an emphasis on handball chains rather than just blasting the ball forward,” Edmund told SEN Mornings

“George Hewett is on-ball and going okay, Will Hayes - who signed with the VFL side – is getting a fair bit of it.”

However, it was Edmund’s next name who is set to draw eyebrows, having been a relatively unknown name in the AFL.

“This particular person has now sent me two messages on another individual, they might have found one down there,” Edmund continued.

“Jordan Boyd is going very well at half-back for the Blues.

“So Boyd, a bit of a unique path to the here and now, out of Spotswood, out of Footscray VFL, I think he only played two games of rep football in his life, he was overlooked right through the elite talent pathway.

“But he’s never given up on the AFL dream and he’s found his way to the Blues via last season’s mid-season rookie draft.

“That’s when he was picked up for the Blues, and he’s catching some attention down there playing at half-back.

“For what it’s worth, in an intraclub of course, but he’s getting plenty of the pill and I’m told he’s very impressive.”

Boyd was selected with pick 20 in the 2021 mid-season draft and has been deployed in defence by the Blues.

He suffered a hamstring injury upon joining the Blues and missed the rest of the season.

Carlton’s first practice match against an AFL team comes against St Kilda on February 24.

Horne-Francis has caught the eye of Kangaroos track watchers all summer and again impressed during an intra-club hitout on Friday.
Wearing the No. 6 jumper, Horne-Francis started at the first centre bounce and spent the majority of the match – consisting of three 20-minute periods plus time-on – playing onball.
Despite still being 18-year-old, Horne-Francis is built like an AFL player, aggressively attacks the ball, has quick hands, knows where to run and has breakaway pace from the contest.
He is also strong in one-on-one contests ahead of the ball and uses the ball incredibly well by foot.

In a lot of ways, Horne-Francis is the complete package.
It might have only been a pre-season intra-club match, but Horne-Francis was one of the most influential players on the park.
He will provide plenty of excitement for North Melbourne fans this season – and plenty of points for KFC SuperCoach players.

NEXT LEVEL THOMAS
Kangaroos young-gun Tarryn Thomas generated plenty of talk after producing a blistering second half of last season and looks set to take his game to another level again this year.
Still just 47 AFL games into his career, Thomas was primarily used as a forward across his first two-and-a-half seasons before spending more time through the midfield last year to great effect.
The midfield-forward role is one he looks set to continue in – if Friday’s intra-club match is anything to go by.
Thomas provides a different dynamic with his pace and skill through the North Melbourne midfield and is seriously dangerous in front of goal.
He booted one stunning goal from outside 50m on the boundary in the first period of the match.
And when he was not kicking the goals he was setting teammates up on the lead inside-50 as the “money kick” player.
Expect big things from Thomas this season.
GROWING TALL STOCKS
The durable Todd Goldstein just keeps on delivering and will be the No. 1 man in the ruck again this year, but he is now surrounded by quite a few developing talls at the Kangaroos.
Former Richmond forward-ruckman Callum Coleman-Jones looks to be a very handy recruit, who will be primarily used in attack but can also give Goldstein an occasional spell in the ruck.
Coleman-Jones did just that in Friday’s intra-club match, starting forward but having a few short rotations in the ruck in an impressive display.
He works hard around the ground, has good hands above his head and will be of great assistance as another tall option alongside Nick Larkey in the forward line.
Fellow ruckmen and forwards Tristan Xerri, Charlie Comben and Jacob Edwards also did some nice things throughout the match.
Xerri was the main man in the ruck for the opposing team against Goldstein, while Edwards and Comben both took some nice marks and kicked goals in attack in promising signs for their development.

POWELL WOW
After a promising start to last season, a groin complaint meant Tom Powell was not seen again after Round 14.
But that injury is now in the rear-view mirror, with Powell powering through the Kangaroos’ intra-club match.
He found plenty of ball and used it with class through the middle of the ground, including setting up Jacob Edwards for a goal in the third period.
The No. 13 pick in the 2020 draft – who finished fourth in the AFLPA’s Best First Year Player Award - looks set for a big second year.
GREENWOOD GOING STRONG
With star contested ball-winning midfielder Ben Cunnington sidelined indefinitely, big-bodied Gold Coast recruit Hugh Greenwood will get an opportunity to play a similar inside role at least in the early stages of the season.
Greenwood started onball in the Kangaroos’ intra-club match and found plenty of the footy, particularly in the first two periods of the match.

Two strong seasons at Adelaide has helped Ben Keays earn a spot in the club’s leadership group.
Keays, who joined the Crows as a rookie from Brisbane ahead of the 2020 campaign, was promoted on Friday, along with ruckman Reilly O’Brien.
They join incumbents Brodie Smith, Tom Doedee and Rory Sloane, who will captain the team for a fourth season.

Matt Crouch, who missed all of last season with hip and groin issues, was left out of the group.

Players had to nominate trademarks they wanted from their leaders and identify those who best typified them.
“We are blessed at this footy club to have a number of leaders within our playing group and the addition of both Reilly and Ben to the leadership group reflects the growth of our young team and the exciting direction we are heading,” Crows coach Matthew Nicks said.
“Importantly for us, they prioritise others but they also lead by example on game day, by the elite standards they set at training and by a commitment to make others around them better.
“Both bring their own unique style to complement the leaders we already have and who are continuing in their roles – Brodie, Tom and our captain Rory, who have all done a fantastic job with our young group in recent seasons.”

Nicks said Crouch had endured a difficult 12 months but was having a pleasing pre-season.
“We want to give him every opportunity to get himself right and perform for us because he is renowned within the club for his outstanding on-field leadership, and we expect that will continue,” he said.

Could Adelaide start Round 1 with an entirely new group of wingmen?
The Crows’ 2022 pre-season has been characterised by a new level of physicality among the young group.
And Monday’s session was no different, with the Crows going full bore in match simulation.
Here’s the latest intel from West Lakes.
SEEDSMAN’S SLOW PROGRESS
In a positive sign, Paul Seedsman was doing some decent level intensity running, and even some kicking.
The worrying news for Crows fans should be that nearly two months after suffering concussion prior to players going on their Christmas break, Seedsman still isn’t able to engage in contract training and has to wear sunglasses when outside.
It is a cruel blow for Seedsman. who had arguably a career-best season in 2021 and recently got married.
Crows leadership group member Tom Doedee, who himself is in the concussion protocols after a collision last week but is said to be recovering well, said last month there was concern about Seedsman’s lingering symptoms.
And while the Crows are no doubt being cautious with Seedsman, and he has made progress in recent weeks, the former Collingwood dasher still having to wear sunglasses outside nearly two months on from the concussion surely must be a worry.

NEW WING DUO?
With Seedsman on the sidelines, there looks to be a bit of a change as to who fills the Crows wing positions.
When the group split into match sim Lachie Sholl – who started the 2021 season strongly and earned a Rising Star nomination – was on the “weaker” blue side.
For the stronger white side Wayne Milera and Mitch Hinge, both returning from long-term injuries, were on the outside.
Milera also rotated on occasions through the middle in another positive sign as he makes his back from basically two years without footy.
Hinge got game time in Round 1 last season after moving across from Brisbane but dislocated his shoulder three times against Geelong.
Both are looking good chances for Round 1.

SLOANE STILL THE MIDFIELD RANGER
In a coaches Q&A with The AdvertiserAdelaide senior coach Matthew Nicks said he had brief conversations with Crows captain Rory Sloane about where he might play in 2022 – hinting that he could spend time at half-forward.
But for the first centre bounce at match sim it was Sloane, Rory Laird, Ben Keays, Harry Schoenberg and Jordan Dawson along with Reilly O’Brien in the Crows midfield.
Dawson playing on the ball is looking likely, with the boom recruit from Sydney continuing to spend time on the ball during Monday’s session.
They were up against Kieran Strachan, Matt Crouch, Sam Berry, Luke Pedlar, Jackson Hately and even Sholl at times in the battle for midfield supremacy.
Crouch should find his way into the Crows’ first-choice midfield soon, while Berry has put on some size and Pedlar cracked into tackles like he usually does.
ROUND 1 BOLTER?
Josh Rachele has been turning heads at West Lakes so far this pre-season.
But with the No.6 draft pick not on the track on Monday it was a fellow draftee who impressed in his small forward role.
After a break so players could rehydrate. No.36 pick Jake Soligo played in the stronger white team and impressed.
With Lachie Murphy still recovering from a bulging disc it was Soligo, Ned McHenry and James Rowe lining up as the small forwards for the stronger side for the second half.
Rachele will still be right in the mix for Round 1 when he returns, but Soligo might give coaches something to think about.

McASEY BACK
Outside of Murphy and Seedsman, there is a pretty clean bill of health for the Crows.
Brodie Smith missed Monday’s session with illness but No.6 pick from the 2019 draft Fischer McAsey took part in match sim.
McAsey suffered a stress fracture in his femur prior to Christmas, but he was able to join in with drills and the second half of the match sim on Monday.
He was sent straight down back with Billy Frampton for the blues to deal with Riley Thilthorpe and Darcy Fogarty.
KING RILEY
Given he is suspended for the first three games of the season, Taylor Walker was in the blue side on Monday.

If Cripps plays that inside mid role cleanly I might be in. Just worried about the holding the ball interpretation, he could get penalised are fair bit, but, that could be any midfielder.

Actually think a fit and focused Polec is clear best 22, they actually don't have any real genuine wingers and his outside class is definitely of high value. Weird price point but reckon he could easily end up in the best couple of cash cows in the comp if he's genuinely fit and firing. 4 seasons of 80+ in a row is genuinely good.

Sounds like I will not be alone on TT, hasn't left my draft yet and seems to be firming by the report. Reckon we're in for a season similar to 2020 where you can nab 3 or 4 genuine premiums in that 80s averaging group, always hard to back yourself in on them but I think I'm gonna, the extra premium at the end of the day is huge if it comes off.

A wild DEF rookie pops up. Sounds promising. Could be Kemp and him both from the Blues down back. I'd really love some good back rookies to pop up as I genuinely have very little feel going on the premiums there right now.

Hinge also sounding very promising, loved him last preseason and is a quality kick of the footy. Could be a very big scorer in the right role. Would be absolutely worth the premium if playing off HB.

Lions had an intraclub, not a heap of relevant SC info beyond a few snippets...

Zorko played the entire game as a defender, though Mike Whiting mentioned afterwards that it's just a preseason game.

Ely Smith played the entire game in the probables' midfield and looked ok.

Wilmot doesn't seem to be in the picture for the probables, playing behind Coleman, Answerth, Zorko and others.

Zorko as a Defender. Does this bring Coleman into doubt.??
