My take on Ports Intra club.

Disclaimer that I spent a great deal of the time yarning with some people I hadn’t seen for a significant amount of time, so take it with a grain of salt.

Butters - looks to be turning himself into a significant clearance player. Spent a good deal either bottom of the pack, or second bottom which is arguably more impressive. Huge amount of tape on his shoulders which looks preventative. I’ve said it before but he has a serious young Robbie Gray vibe about him. Not the biggest or fastest, but potentially the smartest bloke on the field.

SPP - BoG for mine, looks in top nick and has clearly worked on taking an extra half second before disposing of the ball. Played the Wines role in the first half. If he locks down a 1st string mid role and not a flaky HFF he could be SC relevant. Took Dusty 5 pre seasons to really get rolling and I see them as very similar players (type not calibre) so it could definitely be his year. Lots and lots of ifs in there though.

Sinn - About as good a hit out as you can hope for from a kid. Chased ferociously and tackled well. Uses fairly well and did what he was told when he made a couple of mistakes. Shades of a young Luke Hodge if I dare make the comparison. If Bonner had half his mongrel he’d be the best Winger in the league. Not sure who he puts out the side as he and Bonner are probably 22nd picked and the latter seemed entrenched in the 1s side. Could make an argument to drop DBJ for him based off of that game but pre season games are so hard to read.

Skinner - bit disappointing for mine. Finlayson gave him the runaround while they were matched up. Fear he might be a bit undersized to put up numbers like he did in the scoobies. Will get a shot at one point but think he’s behind Clurey and McKenzie as the 7/8 def.

Finlayson - best KPF on the day. Played the 2nd ruck well and popped up in the right spots as he just seems to always do. If he has a 35+ goal season I think port will win most games. Important part of our structure going forward.

Rozee was rubbish, has put on some size but we, and he, are still trying to figure out exactly what type of footballer he’s going to be. Disregard until we see some role consistency I reckon.

Duursma - like Rozee has filled out significantly. Learning to run with his increased weight seemingly. Potentially the one that loses his spot to Sinn if what I saw is any indicator of future form.

No other rookies worth mentioning I don’t think. If I’ve missed anyone that’s of interest, sing out and I’ll tell you what I remember.

Long version is pick Butters, pick Sinn if he’s named and probably disregard the rest.

Edit: Also if Vinsentini is 88kg then I’ll eat my hat. Would eat 88 weetbix for breakfast most days.

Thanks mate.

Any opinion on Mead?

Any opinion on Dylan Williams? I was hoping he would get fit over summer and show something this year. The vibe hasn't been promising.
Williams is fast approaching irrelevance, if he can’t get his fitness base up he’ll never make it. Doesn’t seem to have made any significant progress this summer in that area.

West Coast
Tues West Coast training notes :-

Cool hand Lukes:

Significant steps forward for two Lukes, Strnadica and Edwards, at Tuesday morning’s session at Mineral Resources Park for the Eagles.

Ruckman/forward Strnadica, widely tipped to claim one West Coast list berth, did the warm-up with the rest of the group, including some light mobility and skills work.

Strnadica has spent much of the summer walking laps because of an ankle problem but appears to be progressing.

Edwards has been away from the main group for much of summer because of a knee problem but was given a boisterous welcome from teammates as he rejoined training after a long period of rehabilitation.

Flyin’ Ryan back on deck:

The dynamic small forward was granted a day off training on Monday after a racist social media post targeted his family but he was back with the group on Tuesday morning.

Earlier, teammate Dom Sheed labelled the post disgusting and unacceptable.

Where’s Willie? Here’s Willie:
After being backed off from training a week ago, Willie Rioli was back out in the thick of things and moving well.

Looks like he is still a very good chance of being in the round one selection mix and possibly practice match selection prior to that.

Is Keitel in line for a list spot?
Interesting to hear the way Sheed spoke of the West Perth spearhead Tyler Keitel on Tuesday morning.

Sounds like the Eagles players believe Keitel is under serious consideration to get one of the list spots.

On Keitel, he is a consecutive Bernie Naylor medallist, state FF past two seasons and capable of kicking bags of goals.

Essentially, Keitel would be the Darling replacement.

Strnadica I believe would seriously challenge Williams as NN’s backup ruck so if he gets a spot on the list, he is fantasy relevant as a ruck/fwd priced at 102K I would think.

Still a ways off, didn’t notice him too much but fumbled a bit when he had the ball. Looks to be moving pretty well but I’d be surprised to see him play seniors this year. Would mean our midfield is 4+ down.
Thought Mead showed a lot, actually. Bit small at this stage but quite capable and nippy pace too.
I was also really impressed with Mead, thought he had a really good showing, albeit when he was playing well it wasn't in the role that he's going to have to make the side in and he was a fair bit quieter in that HF role.

I do agree that he's probably outside the 22 but if Rozee puts up a few more efforts like this one or Motlop and SPP choose potato form then he's definitely a chance.

Ultimately think he's a low value choice though, JS and scoring potential both problematic. Probably similar to a McNeil type last year in role/JS combination.

Midfield with Butters, Amon, Wines, Boak and Drew is pretty well settled with the SPP/Gray spot filling out rotations so hard to see that chance being there.

Port side will be interesting, Sinn has a pathway to a better role but will also have questionable job security. Said it before but he's an all or nothing rookie, he'll either make 200k or nothing

At least Sinn has DPP too!
