Tigers vs Cats
General - Watched the first 3 periods, a lot of the reserves coming in late in the 3rd and I've got things to do this afternoon
Weird game, were a couple of crunching tackles and even near skirmishes but the overall intensity was pretty low, though did build in the 2nd quarter after a wide open first. Relatively strong teams by both sides.

Cats - Would be happy, kicking at goal was poor but created a lot of high quality chances, showed that under little pressure they can move the ball freely forward and also able to find gaps when pressure went a bit higher. Very strong team on the park, Duncan the only very clear best 22 out and then Griers, Henry, Menegola and Rohan who I'd say are best 22 also but definitely could have pressure put on them. Nothing really stood out structurally, think we know what they are.
Cameron - Looked really, really good. I think there probably isn't enough ball but wouldn't be at all surprised if he works back into the high 80s to low 90s range this year after the issues last preseason never really were recovered from. Great signs for the Cats.
Holmes - Strong midfield mix for him, HF and then guts. Have to say it was kind of a Duncan type role but is a very good sign. Probably too expensive and a couple of years too early but looked good doing it.
Selwood - Low midfield minutes for him, probably just out there for a run but one to watch as they do have to phase him out eventually.
SDK - Was sound but also didn't really do anything to demand a spot. Will be interesting with Blicavs and Henry down back whether they favour the 3rd genuine tall or go for a Kolo/Zuthrie type to play taller. Have always preferred the tall so hopefully that's the case. Strong bench rookie option if they do go that path. Cats over possess down back which can create points and he was solid in the contest and did look to mark, which are good point sources. A tick, now just need the teams to fall the right way.
Stengle - Not fantasy relevant but he played really well.
Narkle - Came on in Q3 and played pure mid from there, indicator where he's at I suggest but he does some good things.
Hawkins - Like Cameron, looked terrific. Buy the dip on him for mine but will be a strong option again.
Guthrie - Rock solid, see no reason to doubt his position this year, definitely can make the case he's underpriced because of the injury last year as well.
Danger - Pure mid for the first two with forward rests, basically pure forward in Q3. Looks good, another probably going under the radar after a horrible 2021 but looks ready for a strong season. Definitely being slept on as a pick, imo.
Zuthrie - Just too expensive but he was everywhere down back as the other floating guy.
Stewart - Excellent game from him, looks fit and was really active, probably the hardest worker this side of Smith in the game which is a great sign. Definitely a big tick. Henderson gone probably means more ball. Pretty sure he was off the field when Tuohy took a couple of kick-ins.
Tigers - Were really solid, their outs unfortunately are pivotal in trying to work things out, they almost couldn't have pulled a more important group out of the game than Grimes, Cotchin, Rioli and Lambert if we wanted indicators on roles/job security, oh well will do my best
Interesting part for them is how rigid their midfield mix was, only used 4 players in CB for the entire Q1 and Q2, wasn't until the last few minutes of Q3 that Bolton and Sonsie even went in.
Vlastuin - Thought he was comparable to Stewart at the other end, for all the focus on other guys, I think he's the guy who is going to take the majority of the Houli ball, I don't personally have the cajones to actually pick him but I genuinely reckon he's a strong chance to go 100+ this year. Looks in great nick also.
Prestia - Another strong hitout for him. Looks fit and ready.
Martin - Was surprised he played, more surprised the role he played and not surprised how well he played
Looks slim, in a good way, which is always an issue for him. This year is different in that he comes in already with his price fallen and also with some motivation having fallen from the mountain pretty epically last year, not to mention the dad thing, I've rarely seen him go this hard in a preseason game. The injury concern in the preseason definitely a worry as I don't like picking guys off poor preseasons but it's Dusty, priced at 8 points below his worst season in the previous 6 and 25 below his scoring level in the role he played today. Cotchin factor though makes the read really difficult. Were they just getting miles in the legs or is that the intended role. To be honest with the way the forward line is setup, I don't think they need him there so I tend to lean towards enough from option a with a dash of option b there. His upside if playing as a midfielder is comparable to Dunkley and his popularity makes him dangerous.
Ross - Huge midfield minutes, he was solid, no idea how he scored as he's not flashy and you don't notice but he always accumulates so probably decently. He's the obvious guy to drop down for Cotchin though alongside Dow, rather than Dusty/Prestia.
Tarrant - Was well beaten but so were all their defenders. Looked fit.
Baker - Playing forward all game.
Riewoldt/Lynch - Both looked really good today, if they're both fit it really helps Dusty's role.
Short - Massive Q1, would love to know the TOG stat for Q2 but it seemed very low and is when most of the other players picked up their kick-ins, basically Miller on a quick play (kicked straight to Short) and Vlastuin were the only players who took kick-ins off Short while I noticed him actually on the field. Seemed very strong in Q3 again with high TOG. I may be wrong and just totally missed him but it sure seemed like he only played about 10 minutes in the 2nd. Looks great.
Balta - Definitely forward and 2nd ruck, I think that's a great thing for Dusty.
Dow - Huge midfield role, I don't think he really made it count but he's a lot like Ross in that he may have scored well and I just didn't notice it. He's the most obvious one to drop out for Cotchin and I reckon that even while the names were missing, the structure was fixed and Cotchin literally replaces him.
Gibcus - Beaten on the lead more times than you'd like but when it's low pressure F50 entries it's hard to blame the defenders, especially against AA forwards, the midfielders gave none of the forwards a chance and none of them really did anything so nothing to really hold against him. He seems to be a really good ball user and he actively participates in the play. Definitely felt like a bit of a 3 way trial with Miller and Broad for the final spot to me, I'd have said Broad was the best performed and with runs on the board I'd say he's the favourite for round 1 personally. Would be hard to pay the premium for him with JS issues and I think he's probably a borderline starter type so unideal to park the extra cash on a bench rookie also. Really like the look of him though.
Bolton - Full time forward until the last few minutes of Q3. Basically can inverse Martin's here, the reality is that they probably split midfield time a bit but if it's 70/30 Martin, that's huge. 50/50 and they probably nullify largely, other way and Martin falls from the starter crew as will be available for the same price all year and can wait and see. Tough read. Bolton himself a firm cross though as the role isn't there based on this. Will still watch closely next week but happy to say I still think he's a rung below the others in his price tier.
Sonsie - Came on with about 10 to go in the 3rd period, didn't do a lot in that time. Pretty much confirms he's not far from the mix but also not really in it.
Miller - Probably too expensive for what he is but he's also in the mix. It's interesting with the three options, Broad is established and we know what he is, Miller is the gorilla if they want that and a good defender by the looks, Gibcus the most potential to be something special. The priority they pick of that is going to be interesting.
Ralphsmith - The one who is hardest to read of all, did almost all his work when Short was, I believe off the ground, did a few nice things in the rest of the time but really gluttonous in that short period. Love to know why Rioli missed as he seemed well ahead and did nothing to change that in the intra-club and not playing at all suggests sinister reasons rather than beaten to the spot. Which would mean that Ralphsmith is on the outside looking in, which given his price would be a firm nail in the coffin BUT the role is excellent if he has beaten Rioli out and taken the spot, still expensive and I'd still worry about JS but he played well.
