Here’s 13 players who are on our radar for possible DPP additions during 2022:

Nick Daicos $193,800 MID to DEF-MID

Daicos is set to be one of the most-popular selections of 2022 based on his incredible junior numbers and the role Craig McRae has slated for him appears very KFC SuperCoach friendly. The signs from Collingwood are Daicos will start at halfback and rotate through the middle, possibly in a swap with skipper Scott Pendlebury. If he’s eased in at halfback with small stints in the middle, DEF status could arrive by Round 6.

WHAT IT MEANS: You should seriously consider starting Gold Coast’s Bodhi Uwland. The depth of rookie midfielders (Tsitas, Horne-Francis, Stephens, Ward etc) means you could swing Daicos into your defence in Round 6 and move Uwland to M11. If you’re starting Jack Crisp, Lachie Whitfield or Jordan Dawson (see below) in defence, you will have a DPP swing and potential cover in the event of Covid absences or injury.

Jason Horne-Francis $207,300 MID to FWD-MID

The Phantom was dirty when Horne-Francis wasn’t given DPP status but he could be feeling much better by the first round of KFC SuperCoach DPP changes in Round 6. North Melbourne’s midfield is suddenly stacked and although the No. 1 draft pick is destined for stints in the engine room, he looms more as a rotation option than a regular member of the Roos on-ball brigade.

WHAT IT MEANS: Make sure you start a DPP rookie in your forward line if you plan to eventually send JHF forward. Charlie Parker from Western Bulldogs is the obvious option at 102k, or Ned Long from Hawthorn. If Horne-Francis scores as hoped (75-80 average) you could delay forward upgrades, use him on field and then hope midfielders such as Patrick Dangerfield and Marcus Bontempelli — who spend time in attack — get DPP status by mid-season. If JHF wasn’t already locked into your side the prospect of DPP by Round 6 should seal the deal.

Jordan Dawson $550,300 DEF to DEF-MID

The Crows’ star recruit has produced an eye-catching pre-season and all the talk out of West Lakes is the ex-Swan will be spending a fair chunk of time on a wing or even playing as an inside midfielder. Dawson scored well while sharing the defensive 50 with Jake Lloyd and the sky’s the limit if he’s going to at least be a semi-regular on-baller, considering he boasts one of the best left boots in the game.

WHAT IT MEANS: The possible DPP might give him an edge if you’re weighing up Dawson against other defensive premiums such as Jake Lloyd, Tom Stewart and Jordan Ridley who are only likely to have DEF status this year. The extra five trades will help but if the number of players missing games in AFLW is any indication, DPP is going to be absolutely vital to plug gaps in our sides throughout 2022.

Scott Pendlebury $492,300 MID to DEF-MID

See the above notes on Nick Daicos. Collingwood’s recent intraclub introduced fans to the Daicos-Pendles swap, a pairing Pies fans have been dreaming of years (although Josh did spend some time in the middle last year). Halfback is one of the easiest spots to rack up KFC SuperCoach points, especially in a team which is expected to be under defensive pressure — think Jarman Impey at Hawthorn last year. Impey had only averaged more than 68.3 points once in his career, went to halfback and averaged 90.8. Pendles could have a field day back there.

WHAT IT MEANS: You won’t want to go too heavy on defensive premiums to start the season. Lloyd, Dawson, Stewart, Rich, Ridley and Sicily are all tempting, but overloading your team with 4-5 premiums could mean not having space for Pendlebury if he becomes a DEF-MID. If he gains DPP status, $500k will be great buying. His 90.8 average last year would have ranked 26th in defence, but it included an injury-affected score of 26. The last time he averaged less than 100 before that was in 2007.

Dayne Zorko $595,400 MID to DEF-MID

This one might be a long shot, at least for Round 6, but track watchers noted Zorko was deployed at halfback in Brisbane’s recent intraclub match. That move franked a suggestion from the Lions their skipper could spend time roaming defence as they look to introduce Jarrod Berry, Cameron Rayner and co into their midfield rotation. Whether Zorko plays enough time at halfback to pick up DPP is debatable, but he would become a must-have if he picked up DEF status, even in the mid-season changes.

WHAT IT MEANS: Zorko would have been the No. 1 defender by average last season and the time he has spent at halfback in pre-season reinforces the need to be flexible with your thinking. Don’t get overcomitted on one line — apart from your rucks — otherwise you could miss out on a potential star who picks up DPP status.

Isaac Heeney $454,500 FWD to FWD-MID

OK, we’ve been here before — several times. But, if we believe the talk from the Harbour City, Sydney is intent on using Isaac Heeney in the midfield this season. It has to be a boost for his chances of fulfilling that promise that Callum Mills has been eased through pre-season and James Rowbottom and Ollie Florent are injured. Heeney’s injury history is a concern, but most KFC SuperCoaches will think if he manages a 50-50 split between midfield and forward or better he will launch to an average well above 100.

WHAT IT MEANS: You need to seriously consider starting him, even at the expense of a locked-on premium such as Josh Dunkley or Mitch Duncan (pending fitness). Watch the pre-season games closely and if Heeney is a centre-bounce midfielder, make sure you don’t miss out. He has the potential to sit at F2 behind Dunkley for most of the season if you’re going with a cheaper forward structure, as many coaches are.

Mabior Chol $367,400 RUC to RUC-FWD

Chol isn’t exactly KFC SuperCoach relevant, but he looms as the most-likely player to fill the void left by Ben King’s knee injury in the Suns’ attack. If he plays that role and then chops out Jarrod Witts when he’s resting, RUC-FWD status will be a fait accompli.

WHAT IT MEANS: Not much. Luke Jackson and Tim English are also RUC-FWD and will surely finish with better averages than Chol.

Connor West $249,800 FWD to FWD-MID

This one seems a little off broadway, but if you’ve been considering Jade Gresham, Cam Rayner, Charlie Curnow and co, you should have West on your watch list for pre-season. His first three games last season netted scores of 71, 55 and 59 and that was while spending a fair chunk of time playing forward (as his 2022 starting position suggests). Adam Simpson seems intent on shaking up the West Coast midfield mix and West has been one of the players featuring regularly in pre-season. A shoulder injury to mature-age recruit Greg Clark will only increase West’s chances of midfield time.

WHAT IT MEANS: You might get away with leaving out a $299k Jade Gresham, freeing up $50k and taking West instead. Gresham has been eased through pre-season and West is reportedly flying. $50k is the difference between starting a $102k rookie on your mid bench or having Ben Hobbs for cover. It’s food for thought at the very least.

Darcy Tucker $323,200 DEF to DEF-MID

Word from the west suggests Tucker will be used a wingman/midfielder in 2022 and he has enjoyed an encouraging pre-season. He played in an inside role when Nat Fyfe and David Mundy were missing during an internal game, but a wing role looks more likely come Round 1. He’s never been hugely relevant in KFC SuperCoach classic but is an option if you’re after a value pick later in drafts.

WHAT IT MEANS: Not much for KFC SuperCoach classic unless you’re after an almighty POD. Tucker’s best season was 2019 when he averaged 73.4.

Luke McDonald $372,100 MID to DEF-MID

The second half of 2020, when McDonald flew home with an average of 118.4 from Round 8 onwards, seems like a lifetime ago. McDonald’s average dipped to 68.4 during an interrupted 2021 season when Jack Ziebell and Aaron Hall stepped into his role as a distributor from the back half. David Noble has floated McDonald will move back to defence this year, but it’s tough to see Ziebell, Hall and him averaging premium numbers. Hall suffered a recent hamstring injury but should return by a month into the season, at the latest.

WHAT IT MEANS: You might want to think twice about starting Ziebell and Hall, at least until you see whether McDonald shares some of the easy ball which came their way last year. North will be a key team to watch in pre-season.

Mitch McGovern $256,000 FWD to DEF-FWD

McGovern has only twice averaged above 60 points during his career and his most-recent season reaching that mark was in 2018. His five games last year returned scores of 62, 60, 49, 60 and 63. His selection would come with obvious trepidation but a new role roaming across halfback for Carlton all-but guarantees he will be one of the first players this season to have DPP added. That means if you’re starting with Keidean Coleman, you could have a McGovern-Coleman swing available by Round 6. His scoring is likely to increase playing in defence, it’s just a matter of by how much. If he can average somewhere between 70-80 points, you could justify McGovern’s starting price of $256k at F6.

WHAT IT MEANS: Watch him closely during pre-season. If he looks at home playing behind the ball, he should come into your calculations for Round 1 alongside a host of other good options in the $200k-$300k forward bracket.

Andrew McGrath $464,600 MID TO DEF-MID

Just when it seemed Zach Merrett could be the midfielder to fill a distributor role for Essendon this season, Ben Rutten turned to Andrew McGrath in their first hitout of pre-season against Western Bulldogs. The Bombers are keen to expose Jye Caldwell to their engine room and someone has to make way from last season, with McGrath appearing the most likely. He roamed halfback for much of the match against the Bulldogs and was one of Essendon’s best players, hitting triple figures in KFC SuperCoach. McGrath scored four tons in the first 10 rounds of 2021.

WHAT IT MEANS: Even though the rookie cupboard is pretty bare in defence, you won’t want to have James Sicily (assuming you’re starting him) any deeper than D4. That will leave you two upgrade positions for players such as McGrath and Pendlebury if they interest you should DPP arrive at any stage.

Josh Kennedy $506,700 MID TO DEF-MID

The transition to the next era is on in the Harbour City with Kennedy shuffled to defence to accommodate Heeney and Chad Warner in pre-season. JPK’s days as a midfield premo (he averaged 106.6 in 2019) are behind him, but he might be a contender for a defensive spot, especially if he’s less than $500k. He scored 154 in Round 19 last year, so clearly still has it in him to go very big.

WHAT IT MEANS: Although he’s playing in defence, Jake Lloyd is the chief distributor for the Swans and that’s the role you want in KFC SuperCoach. I’m prepared to say Pendles and McGrath will be better options if that trio all get DEF status.

RE:.........Clubs will have to exhaust their entire list, and rookie list, before accessing the 20 state league / vfl players...........
Doesn't make sense, if some of the AFL Teams new, young, recruits' bodies are not yet ready to compete against men. A bit harsh forcing them to play and possibly get injured.
I think that's pretty unlikely given most of these "new, young, recruits' bodies" will be competing against men in the reserves every week.

If there's anyone that a club is truly concerned about, the club will just assign them them "general soreness" and rule them out anyway.

I remember like 10 years or more ago thinking - man, the amount of information available now days is crazy regarding SC and fantasy games. But fast foward today, it's insane.
Finding the time to read it all is hard enough, then finding the time to decipher it, then record the relevant information and then finding the time to read back all the information that you recorded.

It’s getting serious now, KFC SuperCoaches, the first lot of scores for 2022 are in.

The AFL’s round of practice matches is complete and there is plenty to learn from a KFC SuperCoach point-of-view.

Here is every player’s KFC SuperCoach score from the first six matches, thanks to Champion Data.

Note: More players are used in the practice matches, but there are still only 3300 points to go around. Given the unofficial nature of the games, stats were not recorded live, resulting in delayed scores.

EAGLES

The main news out of the Eagles’ camp this pre-season is the mounting injury toll, with more players going down in their big loss to the Dockers. The biggest blow for KFC SuperCoaches was a foot injury to draftee Campbell Chesser ($148,800 DEF/MID) who was shaping as a likely Round 1 debutant. He’s now expected to miss the first half of the season. Tim Kelly (4464,700 MID) top-scored for the Eagles and Andrew Gaff ($496,600 MID) presents value after averaging 100-plus from 2018-20, but the Eagle to put on your radar is Alex Witherden ($471,700 DEF) who took the most kick-ins for the club (four, playing on from all of them) and is ready to assume a regular role as a backline distributor.

There is a heap of upside in the Fremantle midfield with Andrew Brayshaw ($584,300 MID) ready to take another step up after improving his average from 101 to 107 last season and Caleb Serong ($451,000 MID) showing all the signs of a breakout season. Will Brodie ($224,300 FWD/MID) could be the best buy of the lot after crossing from Gold Coast if he can establish a regular spot in John Longmuir’s centre square brigade – 19 centre bounce attendances is a great start (Serong has 22, the equal-most of any player). Stick Nathan O’Driscoll ($123,900 DEF/MID) on your defensive bench.

LIONS

All aboard the Jarrod Berry ($268,500 MID) train. The Lion had his fair share of injury troubles last year but looks to be a bargain buy in the midfield after booting three goals and scoring a mammoth 158 points. Berry, who attended 12 centre-bounces, showcased his power at stoppages and his forward-half impact, reminiscent of his 2020 season where he amassed six tons – all of those eclipsing 120. Speaking of 2020, Lachie Neale ($543,200 MID) showed signs of his Brownlow Medal-winning season with 144 points – and no, we won’t have to worry about his midfield minutes. Zac Bailey ($459,900 FWD-MID) is also one to watch in 2022 after his 141-point total, attending the fourth most centre-bounces for the Lions behind Neale, Jarryd Lyons and Hugh McCluggage. Cam Rayner ($278,600 FWD) has been a buzz player this pre-season but managed just the 41 points despite 12 centre-bounce attendances. We’ll cut him some slack considering it was his first game from a serious knee injury, but you’d want to see a lot more in his next outing. First-round draftee Darcy Wilmot ($139,200 DEF) provided drive from defence and was assured by foot on the way to 48-points in a promising audition for a Round 1 start.

CROWS

The Crows had under 30 players fit and available due to a Covid-19 scare but the main story was Josh Rachele ($184,400 FWD-MID). Fears about the No.6 pick’s role in a struggling team were allayed by his sparkling 85-point display in his first outing as a Crow. Rachele booted three majors and was a dangerous presence in the air and at ground level inside 50, with two of his goals coming from contested marks. He also worked his way up the ground and shapes as a lock in a line short of reliable rookie options. Andrew McPherson ($307,900 DEF) was the name that jumped off the page with 134 points - the fourth-highest scorer of the match – which was well clear of his regular season personal best of 90. McPherson, who is a noted interceptor, took a team-high six kick-ins, but we need to see more before considering him in KFC SuperCoach. Injury-ravaged midfielder Matt Crouch ($482,000 MID) made a successful return with 81 points and 17 centre-bounce attendances. He was only behind Rory Laird ($632,600 MID) in the centre bounce stakes, stationed at 21 on his way to 95 points. Jake Soligo ($117,300 MID) had a couple of nice moments a wing with 31 points, but may need to show more in his next match to clinch a Round 1 debut.

SUNS

Touk Miller ($677,900 MID) took his game to a new level last season, averaging 124.5 points per game - the third-best in the comp. And, on this showing, he could get even better this year. If you like to stand out from the crowd, he’s currently in only 13 per cent of teams. Matt Rowell ($342,900 MID) didn’t score above 84 last season but the signs are all pointing to a return to his destructive best, while Heath Shaw special Lachie Weller ($400,300 FWD/MID) revelled in a new sweeping defender role, taking 11 behind kick-ins and playing on from eight of them. Put Alex Davies ($202,500 MID) on your rookie watch list, but we would like to see Elijah Hollands ($123,900 FWD) in action before Round 1 to pick him with confidence after he sat out the Suns’ first practice match.

Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell gets a handball away under pressure from Port Adelaide’s Travis Boak. Picture: Russell Freeman/AFL Photos

POWER

Zak Butters ($443,600 FWD) showed his huge scoring power when he had 100 points on the board before getting injured early in the third quarter against Richmond last year. Evidently that was no fluke, especially with extra midfield minutes promised by Ken Hinkley in 2022, although Butters attended just five centre bounces against Gold Coast. Josh Sinn ($157,900 DEF-MID) did enough to push his claims for a Round 1 berth - and KFC SuperCoaches might need him given a lack of cheap options in defence. Jackson Mead ($123,900 MID) is another to watch for a potential bench spot and keep Sam Hayes ($123,900 RUC) in mind especially if Scott Lycett’s ankle injury is worse than first thought.

DEMONS

The one-sided nature of the contest was reflected in the KFC SuperCoach scores, with nine Demons tallying 90 points or more, compared to one at North. And there’s no surprise at the top, with Max Gawn ($657k RUCK) and Clayton Oliver ($672k MID) leading the way again. Oliver dislocated his finger and Gawn spent some time on the bench in the third term, before finishing the game rucking against young Roo Jacob Edwards. Fourth-year Demon Tom Sparrow ($262k MID-FWD) attended 15 centre bounces and recorded 92 points in an impressive midfield showing. Steven May ($492k DEF – 62 points) played on with four of his five kick-ins, while Christian Salem ($514k DEF – 111 points) took the other three for Melbourne.

KANGAROOS

Jack Ziebell ($585k DEF) was the only player to pass the 90-point mark, finishing with 114 points in a reminder of just how KFC SuperCoach-friendly his role in defence is – especially without Aaron Hall. Recruit Hugh Greenwood ($507k MID) attended the most centre bounces of any player on the ground, on his way to 85 points, while Will Phillips ($260k MID-FWD – 52 points), Tom Powell ($368k FWD-MID – 71 points) and Tarryn Thomas ($459k FWD-MID – 81 points) were also a part of North Melbourne’s first-choice midfield, with Jy Simpkin, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Ben Cunnington missing. No. 1 pick Jason Horne-Francis ($207k MID), who attended 12 centre bounces of his own, took a while to get going but was one of the better players on the ground after half-time, tallying 83 KFC SuperCoach points – the third-highest for the Roos – in his first competitive hitout.

BLUES

To the delight of Blues fans and KFC SuperCoach mid-price enthusiasts alike, Adam Cerra ($490k MID) top scored in his first competitive hitout in the Navy Blue. The former Docker kicked two goals and won plenty of the ball in a classy midfield display. Fellow recruit George Hewett ($399k DEF-MID) also showed what he will bring to the Carlton midfield, tallying 99 KFC SuperCoach points after attending 14 centre bounces – the same number as Cerra. Great numbers for a mid-priced defender. And the duo’s arrival is likely to give Patrick Cripps ($454k MID) a boost, if Thursday’s 98-point performance is anything to go by. The skipper moved well through the midfield after what has been described by assistant coach Ash Hansen as a “faultless” pre-season. Maybe he’s not done with in KFC SuperCoach just yet. Mitch McGovern’s ($256k FWD) much-talked about move to defence might bring him into the KFC SuperCoach conversation, too, after impressing in the air against the Saints and taking three kick-ins. Nic Newman ($477k DEF) took the most for the Blues, playing on with each of his five. Corey Durdin ($143k FWD) was lively in the forward-half while Brodie Kemp ($156K DEF) had some nice moments in a high-half-forward role, after playing in defence late last year.

SAINTS

The surprise packet was Jack Sinclair ($479k DEF) off halfback who topped the charts with KFC SuperCoach 121 points, also taking a team-high four kick-ins – but only playing on from two. The 26-year-old’s transformation into a running defender has really flown under the KFC SuperCoach radar, after he averaged 93 points from Round 7 onwards last year. Midfield beast Jack Steele ($686k MID) cruised to 115 points with little fuss, attending the most centre bounces for the Saints. Don’t be too concerned by Jade Gresham’s ($299 FWD-MID) score of 41 - he was eased through the match after his long injury lay-off and should be at full tilt in their next practice game. He attended two centre bounces and provided spark at stages. Rookie hopeful Jack Hayes (33 points) showed promise in a forward/ruck role after coming on at halftime - the highlight being a strong contested mark - as the SANFL powerhouse vies for a list spot. Hayes shapes as a crucial rookie cog with RUC/FWD status likely to come his way if he is signed by the Saints.

BOMBERS

Andrew McGrath’s ($464k MID) move to half-back could be a big win for KFC SuperCoaches, after the mid-price midfielder impressed against the Bulldogs, finishing with 115 points. He found plenty of the ball in the back-half, and pushed up through the middle, in a role which might see him receive dual-position status by Round 6, if it continues. As KFC SuperCoaches were hoping, the arrival of Jake Kelly allowed Jordan Ridley ($537k DEF) to play with more freedom. After a slow star, the star defender, who took a handful of intercept marks and three of his side’s eight kick-ins, finished with 104 points, the fourth-most for the Bombers. Darcy Parish ($621k MID) had plenty of the ball, on his way to 94 KFC SuperCoach points, while newly-signed rookies Tex Wanganeen (47), who only played the final quarter, and Nick Martin (45) did enough to end up straight on the basement-price watchlist. Tempting mid-price option Jye Caldwell ($266k MID) finished with just 51 points, after spending plenty of time across half-forward and attending only two centre bounces.

BULLDOGS

Josh Dunkley ($558k FWD-MID) attended 16 centre bounces and was back to his prolific best through the midfield, tallying 124 KFC SuperCoach points – only, you guessed it, Jack Macrae ($699k MID - 126 points) had more. In what is likely to make forward-line decisions even more difficult, Adam Treloar ($483K FWD-MID) was brilliant, too, before being rested late. He tallied 93 KFC SuperCoach points and attended his fair share of centre bounces while on the ground. Bailey Dale ($518k DEF) was precise with his ball-use in the back-half and took five of the Bulldogs nine kick-ins, on his way to 120 points.

Jack Hayes (St Kilda) RUCK/FWD

2021 SC ave: 128 (SANFL)
2022 PS score: 33

Hayes is top of the list for KFC SuperCoaches out of these train-on players for two reasons. One, his scoring dominance in the SANFL across a three year period, which has seen the mobile big man record season averages of 128, 124 and 105. And second, he is set to be a basement RUC/FWD rookie - valuable as a swing and a cash generator. Hayes is in the box seat to secure a list spot at the Saints after an impressive pre-season, and the 24-year-old could contend for a Round 1 debut. He featured in the second half in a ruck/forward role in the Saints’ pre-season match, clunking a contested mark and scoring 33 points.

Dan Batten’s verdict: Close to a lock if he becomes a Saint with his DPP and potential to break in.

Tyler Keitel (Fremantle) FWD

2021 SC ave: 105 (WAFL)

Like Hayes, Keitel has years of KFC SuperCoach pedigree at state league level – no mean feat for a 196cm key forward. Keitel has averaged 105, 107, and 104 across the past three WAFL seasons and was the competition’s leading goalkicker last year, booting 70 goals in 2021. The 26-year-old had been training with West Coast, but is now crossed to Fremantle as he hunts a list spot.

DB: Key forwards are generally a pass in KFC SuperCoach, but his scoring, age and price would be inviting.

Tom Joyce (West Coast) MID

2021 SC ave: 108 (VFL)

Joyce may not be as likely to snare a list spot as others on this list, but his numbers at VFL level last year suggest he is worth tracking in the Eagles’ pre-season matches. The former Lion, who was delisted at the end of 2021, averaged 28.7 disposals, 6.3 clearances and 108 KFC SuperCoach points from his seven VFL matches. Injury and a lack of state-league footy hurt his chances of contending at the Lions, but he could be a ready-made midfield option if he gets the chance at the Eagles.

DB: Would probably need a fair few midfielders to go down to get a run. Still worth a look, though.

Vincent Adduci (Hawthorn) FWD

2021 SC ave (VFL): 81

Adduci looms as the next Hawthorn mature-ager off the Box Hill Hawks production line, with new coach Sam Mitchell reportedly a fan of the crumbing small forward from his time at the VFL side. Adduci, a similar type to former Hawk Paul Puopulo, averaged 17.3 disposals, 3.6 tackles and slotted 13 goals across nine matches last year. At 23, Adduci could fill a spot on our forward benches if he gets a call-up.

DB: Hawthorn could definitely look to a bigger bodied small forward. Like him as a bench option if he nabs a spot.

Mitch Cox (Brisbane) DEF/MID

2021 SC ave (VFL): 93

On the radar of several clubs last year at draft time last year, Cox has been called up to train with Brisbane after unvaccinated midfielder Cam Ellis-Yolmen was moved to the inactive list. The explosive 24-year-old utility had a breakout campaign with Frankston in 2021, tallying 21.9 disposals, 6.4 score involvements and 93 points per game. Cox is capable of playing all over the ground, which could help his case of being elevated to Brisbane’s list.

DB: Has potential as a scorer, posting totals of 146 and 152 last year, but breaking into that Lions side may be tough.

ADELAIDEJosh Rachele $184,800 FWD/MID

2021 SC Ave: 129 (NAB League)
2022 PS score: 85

The Crows need class, skill and x-factor forward of centre, and Rachele fits the bill right away. Adelaide’s top pick in last year’s draft has already impressed on the track and if all goes well from here, will improve Matthew Nicks’ side offensively from Round 1. The 18-year-old averaged 129 KFC SuperCoach points and booted 11 goals in four games, playing as a forward, in the NAB League last year and could be worth the top-end rookie price tag as a forward. Fears about the No.6 pick’s role in a struggling team were allayed by his sparkling 85-point display in his first outing as a Crow, booting three goals and having a significant impact.

Dan Batten’s verdict: I am now converted. Welcome to my team, Joshua Rachele.

The Phantom’s verdict: Expensive but there’s unlikely to be much better, Hollands aside, on offer in the forward line at less than $200k. In my team.

Josh Rachele keeps pace with Taylor Walker at pre-season training. Picture: Michael Marschall

Jackson Hately $188,700 MID

2021 SC Ave: 99 (SANFL)
2022 PS score: 33

Hately managed just three senior appearances in his first year at the Crows after arriving with high hopes, following some impressive numbers in limited games for GWS. But the tall midfielder, who averaged 99 points in 10 SANFL games last year, hasn’t missed a beat over summer and could get his chance in 2022. It will be great buying if – and it’s still a reasonably-sized if – he does.

DB: It’s feels like an eternity ago since he was a popular bubble boy after averaging 90 points from his first two matches, but his pre-season form is worth monitoring.

TP: A certain early-season cash cow, if he gets picked in Round 1. But that’s no certainty to happen.

Luke Pedlar $123,900 FWD/MID

2021 SC Ave: 20 (2 games), 57 (SANFL)
2022 PS score: 20

The first-round draft pick didn’t have a big impact in his first season at the Crows at any level. But there were glimpses in his 13-disposal debut against the Lions and the three-goal opener in the SANFL. And Pedlar, a tough ball-winner who can break away from congestion, has traits that are likely to translate to KFC SuperCoach scoring, should more chances come in a young Crows midfield.

DB: A big KFC SuperCoach scorer at SANFL under-18 level, averaging 128 points, makes him one to watch this pre-season — especially with his forward eligibility.

TP: One who could surprise in 2022, but it might be later in the year.

Jake Soligo $117,300 MID

2021 SC Ave: 114 (NAB League)
2022 PS score: 31

There were some comparisons made to Swan Errol Gulden around draft time, given Soligo’s foot skills, clean hands at ground level and footy IQ. And that should get the attention of all KFC SuperCoaches. The 18-year-old matched it with the bigger bodies in the VFL last year and averaged 23 disposals, 10 contested possessions and six tackles in the NAB League. After being sighted with the stronger Crows side in match simulation, Soligo shapes as a Round 1 bolter. Soligo had some nice moments on a wing in Adelaide’s pre-season hitout, but managed just 31 points.

DB: Soligo posted 71 points in his VFL debut for Richmond, where he fitted in seamlessly. Looks to be a solid bench option.

TP: Has featured in the Crows ‘A’ team during recent match sim so he’s one to watch during the official pre-season games.

Mitchell Hinge $180,900 DEF

2021 SC ave (AFL) 31
2022 PS score: 79

Hinge has played just two proper matches in the last two seasons – a score of 31 from 44 per cent gametime in 2021 and a ton with Brisbane in 2020 - with a spate of shoulder dislocations cruelling his first year at the Crows. However, the 23-year-old runner has been playing on a wing for the stronger Crows side during match simulation, and Paul Seedsman’s ongoing concussion issues could pave the way for a Round 1 berth. Underlined his SuperCoach credentials with 79 points against Brisbane in the Crows’ first pre-season clash.

DB: On the watchlist, and with Chesser and Wilmot out of the equation for Round 1, I’m warming to him.

TP: Not getting a lot of love in KFC SuperCoach circles at the minute but that’s a different story at West Lakes.

Carlton
BRISBANEEly Smith $123,900 FWD/MID

2021 SC Ave: 69 (VFL)
2022 PS score: DNP

The 21-year-old spent much of the summer in KFC SuperCoach teams last year before the first of two syndesmosis injuries ruined his chances of an early-season debut. Smith, who was drafted as an inside bull before impressing as running midfielder early in 2021, played just four matches for the year – all in the VFL and none consecutive. But he’s fit and played on-ball in Brisbane’s recent match-sim – albeit in the B team.

DB: Was closing in on a debut last year before injury struck. Another potential forward rookie option, but it remains a tough midfield to break into.

TP: All over him last year before injury, but it appears a few have gone past him. And then there’s Cam Rayner’s return.

Darcy Wilmot $139,800 DEF

2021 SC Ave: 87 (NAB League)
2022 PS score: 48

With the retirement of Grant Birchall, there could be an opening for the talented Wilmot who not only offers line-breaking run and neat ball-use from defence, but also a strong defensive mindset. The youngest player drafted last year – who Dayne Zorko is tipping to play AFL footy in 2022 - wasn’t a big ball-winner as a junior but he wins it back off the opposition and makes it count. Wilmot gave the Lions drive and slick ball-use out of defence in their practice game, winning 12 touches and scoring 48, but an overzealous sling tackle means he will miss Round 1 with suspension.

DB: Looked to be a potential option in defence before his suspension. And he may still be early doors.

TP: Hearing plenty of good things out of the Lions camp about Wilmot but he could still have a hard time finding an early spot.

Charlie Curnow is available at a rookie price in his sixth season. Picture: Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images

CARLTONCharlie Curnow $224,300 FWD

2021 SC Ave: 51

A fit Charlie Curnow, who averaged 74 and 77 in his last two injury-free years – his second and third in the competition – is almost a no-brainer. And the signs are good so far this summer, but the fact is the talented forward, who played in the final four rounds of 2021, has played just 15 games since 2019. Curnow was kept goalless in Carlton’s first practice match but moved well, scoring 47 points.

DB: Curnow is a different kettle of fish to Joe Daniher last year. I am sceptical about whether an injury-prone key forward — who may be managed — can justify the high asking price.

TP: Expensive, but looks to be worth the elevated rookie price after an impressive summer if all goes well on the injury front.

Jesse Motlop $117,300 FWD

2021 SC Ave: 53 (WAFL), 71 (U18 Champs)

Small-forwards are never high on the watchlist for KFC SuperCoaches, but, after booting nine goals in eight WAFL matches last year, Motlop looks ready to into a Blues line-up in need of a sublimely skilled goal-kicker. He might not post big numbers if does play, but – at this point – there aren’t many other forward bench options around at the price. The son of Power and Roos goalkicker Daniel slotted two goals in Carlton’s intra-club, with footy boss Greg Williams declaring after the eye-catching display that Motlop is a chance for an early-season debut.

DB: Showed he can be a consistent goalkicker last year against men in the WAFL. Don’t expect big scores, but he could find a place in the Blues line-up.

TP: An early bench spot candidate, depending on what other rookie forwards pop up.

Corey Durdin $143,700 FWD

2021 SC Ave: 33 (2 games), 57 (VFL)
2022 PS score: 57

Motlop has arrived but Durdin could be the one to fill the Eddie Betts void first this year, after playing in the final two games of his debut season, He dominated in the midfield as a junior, with his speed, skill and footy smarts, before playing as a forward at senior level in his draft year. He’s one who could have an impact with limited possession, once he finds his feet. Durdin is right in contention for a Round 1 start after winning kicking a goal and scoring 57 points against St Kilda in his first practice game.

DB: His small forward role and average of 33 from his two matches last year suggests he may not be worth the extra cash. But we may not have a choice.

TP: I like what he did over in the SANFL before he was drafted but he’s probably too expensive for your bench, and not solid enough for an on-field spot in 2022.

Brodie Kemp $156,800 DEF

2021 SC Ave: 36 (2 games), 66 (VFL)
2022 PS score: 43

Carlton fans waited a long time to see Kemp in the Navy Blue after he did his ACL in his draft year. After impressing at VFL level, the versatile, 193cm 20-year-old showed some great signs in defence in Round 23, tallying 14 disposals, seven spoils, four rebound-50s and 52 points in his second career game. He can run through the midfield, and play as a forward, but he’s been, again, working with the defenders over summer. Although, Kemp was used as a forward in Carlton’s intra-club.

DB: I’ve got a watch on Kemp as a D4-5 option, especially after his promising final game of 2021.

TP: The defensive rookie stocks are looking pretty thin so Kemp remains firmly on the watchlist. Would need him to be given a license to run from half-back, though.

Jordan Boyd $123,900 DEF

2021 SC Ave: 67 (VFL)
2022 PS score: 39

Plucked by the Blues in last year’s mid-season draft after a promising start to the season where he averaged 16 disposals and 67 SuperCoach points for Footscray, Boyd showed promise in limited gametime in Carlton’s first practice game. The 23-year-old defender finished with 39 points in about a half of footy and could be one to contend for a spot early in the season.

DB: Consider if he looks to be in the frame for Round 1. But as we know, the Blues are well stocked for defenders.
