KFC SuperCoach NRL 2022: Predicted Round 1 starting teams, Early Mail
Injuries and suspensions from the final week of NRL trials have forced a number of change to our predicted round one teams. Tim Williams tips who will start for your team.
PANTHERS v SEA EAGLES
Thursday, 8.05pm, BlueBet Stadium, Penrith
PENRITH: The defending premiers boast one of the more settled line-ups heading into the new season. Promising youngster Izack Tago impressed in the trials and is expected to take up Matt Burton’s vacant left centre role. Charlie Staines, Robert Jennings and Taylan May will compete for the right wing position this season. Staines appears to be ahead of Jennings in the pecking order, but it could go either way. Nathan Cleary is racing the clock to prove his fitness following off-season shoulder surgery but is expected to play, he would be replaced by former Warriors playmaker Sean O’Sullivan if ruled out. The pack will run out as expected, with Liam Martin set to become a full-time starter on the right edge following Kurt Capewell’s departure to Brisbane. Mitch Kenny is likely named at 14 among a four forward bench, with the only potential alteration being if Ivan Cleary opted for Taylan May on the pine as a backline utility. While I don’t think they’ll go that way, they don’t have the luxury of Capewell to cover that centre role as effectively this season.

SEA EAGLES: Boom rookie Tolutau Koula will push for a centre role, but I expect Brad Parker and Morgan Harper to keep their spots. Harper didn’t feature in either of the club’s trial matches, meaning Koula may get a Round one run. Injuries have hit Manly’s pack hard late in the pre-season. I expect Karl Lawton to start on the left edge in place of the injured Josh Schuster, however former Bronco Ethan Bullemor is also in contention and was named to start in a full-strength trial side for the clash with the Raiders. Haumole Olakau’atu was injured during the pre-season clash with the Raiders. He’s unlikely to be fit for the opener, if he misses we can expect both Lawton and Bullemor to start on the edges. Andrew Davey will push for a bench spot on return from an ACL injury. The fact he didn’t feature in either trial suggests he would have been eased back through reserve grade, but the injury to Ben Trbojevic may force Des Hasler’s hand. RAIDERS: Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and rookie Xavier Savage remain in a tense battle for the fullback role. I suspect they’ll back Nicoll-Klokstad to wear the one, with Savage to play from the wing in place of the suspended Jordan Rapana. Matt Timoko will start at centre, with the other centre spot completely up for grabs. Club captain Jarrod Croker, Seb Kris and Semi Valemei are all fighting for the spot. It’s completely up in the air, but if I had to choose I’d say Kris is ever so slightly ahead of Croker. Titans recruit Jamal Fogarty will partner Jack Wighton in the halves. Aside from Josh Papalii, the entire pack is yet to be locked in. A key position up for grabs is hooker, with Tom Starling pushing veteran rake Josh Hodgson for the nine role. Had it not been for Canberra’s abundance of back-rowers, I’d have said Starling would start the game. However, I think it’ll be as per last season with Hodgson starting and shifting to lock after 20 minutes, with Starling to come on and play 60. I have All Stars Man of the Match Joe Tapine starting at prop alongside Josh Papalii, with Elliott Whitehead and Hudson Young starting on the edge, and Adam Elliott at lock. Corey Harawira-Naera, Corey Horsburgh and club favourite Ryan Sutton will pack punch off the bench. The pre-season injury to Jamal Fogarty will bring either the most talented of the Williams brothers into the team or Matt Frawley.

BRONCOS: Tesi Niu is out with a hamstring injury, opening the door for Selwyn Cobbo to deputise at the back, although this isn’t quite locked in. There’s a bit of a shootout for wing spots, I have Jordan Pereira and Corey Oates filling the roles. Jamayne Isaako and David Mead will apply pressure, particularly when Niu returns. Billy Walters appears to be frontrunner to partner Adam Reynolds in the halves, edging out competition from Albert Kelly and Tyson Gamble. I expect Kurt Capewell to make up the left edge alongside Herbie Farnworth and Corey Oates, with Jordan Riki, Kotoni Staggs and Pereira on the right. Pat Carrigan returns from a lengthy injury layoff and will either play lock, or cover at prop with Flegler injured. Jake Turpin appeared to have the hooking role secured, but a pre-season charge from Cory Paix has applied enormous pressure. Paix looks to have jumped Turpin in the pecking order, and with Walters able to cover for injuries at nine, they may opt for a backline utility on the bench. However, Capewell also provides excellent coverage in that department. Brendan Piakura (suspension, Round 2) and Thomas Flegler (suspension, Round 4) aren’t available.

RABBITOHS: Blake Taaffe gets one crack to impress at fullback in 2022 until Latrell Mitchell returns in round two. Jaxson Paulo is likely to take Dane Gagai’s vacant centre spot, with Josh Mansour on the wing as per the Charity Shield. Taane Milne is another option at centre/wing but looks to have missed out. Campbell Graham played right edge against the Dragons, with Paulo on the left. Lachlan Ilias will partner Keaon Koloamatangi on the right, with Cody Walker and Jai Arrow on the left. Cameron Murray is in some doubt with a shoulder complaint, but is expected to play. Liam Knight will miss the first month following off-season surgeries.

ROOSTERS v KNIGHTS

ROOSTERS: There’s plenty of doubt as to whether Luke Keary will return from his ACL injury in Round one. If not fit to go, Joey Manu will likely deputise at five-eighth in his absence, alongside Sam Walker who will have to overcome relevant concussion protocols after his knock in the trial against the Tigers. With two weeks between games Walker should be fine to take his place. It’s a shoot out for backline spots, with Paul Momirovski, Kevin Naiqama, Joseph Suaalii and Billy Smith in contention for centre/wing roles. Premiership winner Momirovski likely takes one centre spot. Naiqama is firming to join Daniel Tupou on the wings. It’s quite outstanding depth that’ll take the Roosters a long way this season.
If Keary misses and Manu shifts to the halves, it’d allow both Naiqama and Suaalii to slot into the backline. Sam Verrills (suspension, Round 2) is out, meaning Connor Watson or Ben Marschke will deputise at hooker to start the season.

KNIGHTS: Hymel Hunt was injured during a pre-season trial, with Dominic Young expected to come onto the wing in his place. Bradman Best is also in doubt, if he missed, it may force Kurt Mann’s move to the forwards to be temporarily put on hold to help solve the backline dramas. Jayden Brailey is out long-term with an Achilles injury, with Chris Randall to replace him at hooker, forming a new-look spine alongside Kalyn Ponga, Jake Clifford and Adam Clune. Coach Adam O’Brien is extremely hard to get a gauge on with his forward rotation.
Mann will take over Connor Watson’s roving lock role this season and is firming to start the game at 13 provided Best is fit, with Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Tyson Frizell on the edges.
Should this eventuate, Mitchell Barnett would play off the bench. Phoenix Crossland likely acts as the bench utility.
Sauaso Sue is suspended and won’t return until Round 3.

WARRIORS: Reece Walsh and Matt Lodge miss the opening round through suspension. Chanel Harris-Tavita is expected to line-up at fullback, while Kodi Nikorima is firming ahead of Ash Taylor to partner the returning Shaun Johnson in the halves. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Marcelo Montoya are expected to be the wing pairing, with the centre spots both up for grabs. Rocco Berry, Jesse Arthars, Adam Pompey and young gun Viliami Vailea are all in contention. At this stage, I have Arthars and Berry leading the way, but coach Nathan Brown could go with any combination. Euan Aitken will stay in the new edge back-row role he made his own in the back end of 2021. The Warriors have a few options, but he’ll likely make up the back-row alongside Eliesa Katoa and Josh Curran at lock. Bunty Afoa will replace the absent Lodge in the front-row.

Talatau Amone is tipped to win the halves role alongside skipper Ben Hunt, beating out fellow rookie Jayden Sullivan. Jack de Belin is expected to start at lock, with Jack Bird and Tariq Sims in the edge back-row positions. Recruit Jaydn Su’A is another starting option, but is expected to begin his new campaign off the bench. If Sims, who has not trialled, isn’t fit for the opener, Su’A would start. Tyrell Fuimaono and Josh McGuire won’t be available until Round six due to suspension. There are options aplenty in the middle, but Aaron Woods and Blake Lawrie will likely start up front, with George Burgess and Francis Molo playing from the bench.

There’s a bit of a shootout for wing spots, I have Jordan Pereira and Corey Oates filling the roles. Jamayne Isaako and David Mead will apply pressure, particularly when Niu returns. Billy Walters appears to be frontrunner to partner Adam Reynolds in the halves, edging out competition from Albert Kelly and Tyson Gamble. I expect Kurt Capewell to make up the left edge alongside Herbie Farnworth and Corey Oates, with Jordan Riki, Kotoni Staggs and Pereira on the right. Pat Carrigan returns from a lengthy injury layoff and will either play lock, or cover at prop with Flegler injured. With two weeks between games Walker should be fine to take his place. Jayden Okunbor and Corey Allan are vying for a wing role, with Okunbor edging ahead at this stage. Paul Vaughan will start at prop for his new club alongside Luke Thompson. With Raymond Faitala-Mariner returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, Jack Hetherington will make the move from front-row to the edge where he’ll partner Tevita Pangai Jnr who managed to avoid suspension despite being put on report twice and sin binned in the trial against the Sharks.

I've been a Turboless team for all of preseason, so I thought I'd see what a Turbo team might mean. I'm still undecided.
Before this iteration I had both Uto and Arrow. I went with only one in order to turn Pap and Teddy into Turbo. Again I still undecided on which one. Gut says Arrow, but head says Uto.
