If you're banking on Marshall getting DPP because Ryder is back early, then what are you doing with Jack Hayes? Do you just accept that he becomes a donut for most of the season (possibly with Dixon)?

Not a lot of cover there
If the rookies exist I'll pick them haha, you can also pick Durdin for an extra 40k who will likely crawl to 200k. McCartin and De Koning are still a bit of cover

I wouldn't be picking Hayes thinking he's a year long donut after a couple of games. I don't expect Ryder to play the rest of the year after coming back, I think he plays about 12 games and Hayes will be in and out of the side. Three games from Ryder with Marshall between rounds 1-6 should be enough for him to get DPP, if Marshall plays 15% forward with Hayes and and 60% forward with Ryder during that time (37.5% forward).

Think I am done until teams announced.

Would love to pick the Gull, Cripps and to a lesser extent JHF but at the moment I feel better about these options. You can't have everyone and sometimes you will get burned no matter who you choose ;) No Stevens because I played the Constable game previously.
Also still weighing Baldwin verses Martin and Durdin for F7...

This is the latest result of my tinkering. It's not perfect, but unlike most of my efforts it doesn't have any placeholders I've put in because I've hit a dead end. I can't see myself going any more expensive on the bench than I have already unless the rookie situation gets even worse.

Backs- Pretty stock standard with the exception of Ryan being there over Short. There's no doubting the fact that Short's the safer pick, it's just his ceiling that worries me. Houli or no Houli he tops out in the 120s which may limit his scope to be more than a slight improver. Sicily I don't particularly like and would happily dump if there was an alternative to Coleman for that D4 spot. It's basically a value pick because 3 rookies on field doesn't look viable and 4 close to fully priced premiums doesn't interest me either. He does have a history of coming out all guns blazing before dropping off quite badly, slingshot? Boyd at D6 will just be whoever turns up round 1 in that price range with some sort of JS.

Mids- I'm still liking the idea of the 3 super premos here. Losing Oliver for Petracca would gain a little bit of cash if I really need it, I was keen on Petracca for a while but he'd really have to start doing something about the number of points he loses to clangers. M10 + 11 I figure at least a couple of cheap rookies will get the job done in these spots.

Rucks- Darcy's an obvious risk, I can't deny that. He's a bit of an all or nothing pick in that I think he's the only ruck who could put a substantial gap on the others, or he could blow up completely. That combined with English at R2 is probably a bit much, hmmm.

Forwards- As much as I'd like to fade Dunkley, I've accepted that there's a good chance he at least puts a big gap points and price wise into other forwards before his usual injury. He becomes a bit of a necessity in a team so light on premium forwards. The alternative is English at F1 and a 2nd premium ruck. If Brodie really does look like a must have in rd3 I'll find a way to get him, until then I'm staying strong in my anti Brodie stance. Rachele at F6 doesn't worry me as much as some, expectations for on field and even bench rookies seem to have gone through the roof recently. That said, I'm not at all keen on Durdin and would love an alternative like Martin to appear.

exact same structure as me

differences being
ridley + whitfield vs lloyd + mcinerney down back

miller + jelly + ward vs brayshaw + steele + JHF

gawn vs darcy

xerri vs mcgovern

The structure is the best one i could find so really liking ur team atm, probably one rookie short up forward, but with mcartin and dekoning it porbably would be fine

horne francis the obvious ommision that could hurt aswell as lloyd

Thought I'd throw together an "alternative" lineup with Timmy at R2 (moving to fwds) and Cripps with all of the "value" mid-pricers that have been floating around just to see what it might look like.

Seems like it doesn't end up all that "alternative" in the end and still ends up with the same shaky backline, perhaps overly strong midfield and potential donut at M6.

An interesting question is whether you should go into the season with a little cash ITB, might be an idea for a team like this going in with so many mid-price speculators?

Tell us when you find some ;)
I agree. Do you know who it is?
I will, but wouldn't it make sense to build teams 5 days out based on the starting probability of rookies? If that means Rachele, McCartin etc being on the bench as cover that would be logic wouldn't it? That way if some smoky cheap rookies become available nexxt week it's much easier to make improvements to lines than downgrade players looking for money.

Apart from a floating donut I can see zero logic on including players unlikely to start, certainly 3 who cover 2 lines.

Floating donut pretty risky, you always end up with one anyway as round 1 rookies bust and are dropped after a couple of games.
I would also prioritise playing rookies - price dependant however.
