Always going to be abused unless the AFL enforces some kind of sanction. That will probably only happen when a team really takes the piss and obviously uses the rule to their strategic advantage in a finals series.
Also those are very legit, and he's just trying to rouse up outrage by leaving out the context.
  • Zorko felt his surgically repaired calf pop, initial suspicion was a recurrence of his injury. Only cleared after scans.
  • Duursma (another example) had a suspected broken collarbone. Only cleared after scans.
  • McKenzie got stretched off with a non-contact knee injury. Only cleared after scans.
  • Cameron went to ****ing hospital.
In every case the initial diagnosis - on the side of a ****ing football field, not in a hospital - was incorrect but if correct would've been an injury that would keep the player out for at least twelve days if not the season.

Maybe Edmunds should be lobbying for rapid diagnostic scanning technology to be installed in every AFL ground so that the team doctors can have all the information as quickly as possible instead? He's basically trying to rev up the fans by dragging the doctors' names through the mud for not being 100% right when diagnosing players within minutes based off very limited information. Funnily enough despite all the difficulties the doctors still have a better strike rate than Sam Edmunds' "journalism".

Yep, fair points @dlanod. I personally think the abuse avenue is there though and haven't heard any AFL action where a player was subbed but came back without effect the following rd.

It's absolutely possible that it can be abused, but it's also absolutely disingenuous and pretty toxic to use examples that are blatantly not abuse to bolster his "case" that it is being abused.

^Some good points on both sides here.

Interestingly Dimma said recently that they should change the rule so that after half time you’re free to use the sub without an injury. To me that suggests that he’s still following the original rule.

There do seem to have been a few fourth quarter substitutions recently, but without digging into them or building the sample, it’s hard to know whether there’s more to it.

Tom Morris knows all about a liquor license, maybe he can help out, sure he needs a job.
Heard a parent on the radio saying the change of catering company could be a factor. Spotless were paying $38 per hour casual rates, whereas the new company is putting everyone on a salary at $27 per hour, if true ,definitely a factor.
