Just looking at Laird's scores from last season :-

View attachment 52267

In his first game of the season in round 3 he scored 93 - coming back earlier than expected after a broken hand.

In 18 of the next 19 games he scored 100+ , seven in excess of 140  The 1 time he went under 100 was 97 so very close anyway.

He ranked first in the league for disposals, second for tackles, third for ground balls, fourth for clearances.

For whatever reason, he never seems to get a hard tag or maybe his style is such that coaches don't think he can be effectively tagged. Dawson is the crow teams want to shutdown with his elite/damaging kicks so guessing teams are loathe to deploy 2 taggers - moving too far away from the way they want to play.

29 years old so still in his prime, great reports on his preseason so far, doesn't get a hard tag.... hard to see him not going 120+ again tbh

Then I looked at his fixtures - 4 of his first 5 at home including Richmond in round 2 which give up big numbers to elite mids from opposing teams/don't tag under Hardwick.

As @wogitalia pointed out, his fixture works out well for VC/Capt purposes. In the first 6 rounds his draw works out well with Oliver for example if going for those 2 as your preferred VC/Capt combo.

703K is a lot to pay but for the above reasons I am very keen to get him in...only 10% ownership currently further adds to his appeal ;)
He's a jet. He's unlikely to get tagged because he's not a one trick pony. He plays the game as it unfolds. If the ball is there to be won he goes for the ball. If an opponent gets there first he lays the tackle. He'll fill space or make space as required. He only plays off his opponent if the opportunity presents. I think Jack Steele is a similar type.

My only real worry with Laird is if they're squeezing Crouch and Sloane back into the midfield.

I personally think Sloane will play peripheral roles, not dissimilar to what Selwood or Cotchin have done the last couple of years. Crouch is the big question, he really just gets in the way and would hurt Laird, imo.

I'm definitely keen on him though overall, have picked in all my drafts so far.

My M1-3 locked since gold opened.
Satan - starting team for me past 3 years and hasn't let me down. Welcome back Captain!
Miller - beast and ready to take his game to next level. Great to not worrying about you hurting me early. Welcome aboard.
Bont - another favourite and what's even better a favorite of ChampData...and no Dunks!

Worth keeping a watch on Oliver's thumb, I heard reports it was still bothering him a couple of weeks ago. No doubt it will be super come the start of the season.

I have flip flopped and now have Laird in my team over Oliver. Tried different structures that involved Miller at M1, but that looks wrong.

Currently got Bont at M1, looks a bit wrong but allows for getting rid of an extra rookie.

Narrative is he was down after coming back from the thumb, which is true for the 2 games immediately after returning. But his 5 after that (including finals) he averaged 137.4.
The effect a sore thumb can have is being severely overstated by some that are trying to find any reason not to start him

I have both Oliver and Laird atm, they're both very real 130+ candidates, very durable and very consistent scorers

That's true. For me I'm starting Oliver and skipping Laird; but some of the reasons given not for starting Oliver miss the full picture.
I think I'll start both, yes, they'll probably drop in value but the value that they offer, pts wise, in concert with one another as C & VC options over the 1st 7 rnds is very hard to knock back, I've had a look at their fixtures and they marry up perfectly.

I'm going weak in Def. which allows me to spend up on Mid/Ruc/Fwd I'll have more upgrades to do in Def. but I think it'll be easier from a trades cost to upgrade that line, premos in Def are intrinsically cheaper plus I'm baulking at paying top dollar for the fab 4/5 where it's just as possible that some or all of them could be cheaper come upgrade season.

Yeah the defence is where most of my consternation lies every season, and this one is no different. Currently I have Oliver - Touk - Bont - Steele - Hopper but that could easily change based on permutations elsewhere. Although I like Laird, I don't think he supplants anyone I already have.

After much tinkering with mid-price selections I have settled on:
Oliver, Neale, Miller, Cripps and Hopper.

Neale starts the season with a bang then tails off later in the year.

Cripps always scores well against Richmond and Walsh not playing for the first 5-6 rounds
