Position 2023: Defenders Discussion

Not that I have seen no, more so my gut feeling and a few conversations with my best mate (hawks supporter). Just looking at their list and what options they have available, I think it may be fair to assume the option to throw Sicily forward might be there. They have Sicily, Frost, DGB, Blanc, and then Jeka has also been tried as a defender. With Lewis going down, They have Kosi, likely the resting ruck, and what else? Jeka's role is undetermined (He is one I'm watching at 211k). But this is what is making me question if the option for him to go forward is there.
Will make my judgment after seeing how they place the magnets in the pre-season games, but that's where my thoughts are at this point in time.

I’m toying with the idea of just working down from Redman, Young, Daicos, Yeo, Bowes potentially, McKenna, Goater, Ginbey and rookies and stack the mids with the big 4, Green/LDU and Hopper. The mids and fwas barring injury look pretty solid and I’ll just trade aggressively/boost as needed to get the backs right early with the value.
To play devils advocate, the year before (and the one before also similar) of the top 10 all but two were in the top 11 the year before.
Last year had a lot of value plays but I think chasing value is a risky strategy.
I also don't love the premiums for value or even safety this year, definitely leaning towards as many rookies and cheapies as possible, largely because I love the premium mids and fwds are a lot more. It's not even that I dislike the existing premiums, just that I'm struggling to see upside on them.
I expect it will be similar to last year, whichever of them is closest will take it and they'll look to move it out pretty quickly.
The aspect that can push Young up the totem pole is if he is playing an intercept role, if he's add that then it really elevates him. I really like him as a player but he needs that to push his ceiling up to where it needs to be, especially with his durability record meaning getting 23 from him is a low odds bet so really want him scoring at an elite level.
No reason he can't push to 100 this year though without the intercept but would love that 110+ shot that intercepts would allow.

Would expect the double tag to be fairly common this year. That defensive forward tag doesn't actually sacrifice that much overall so I can see teams doing it a lot more often, it's mostly in the zone that you sacrifice, when you've got the ball they're still valuable if they're doing the job right.
Midfield tag will not change a lot but can see both being regular.

I can't see that really just going by the HS SC site as I think it only takes into account current allocated positions and not previous seasons allocations but I believe you. I mean it's all season by season, changes every year depending where value lies.
Yeah and I didn't even add Hewett to the list also from last season.At this stage I see value and bigger movement/changes within the TOP 10 defenders this season (early I know) caompared to the Mids where I'm not really expecting a whole lot of change and Forwards where again those at the pointy end will probably remain there but also the benefits the value that some mid/ruck future FWD DPP will bring also makes me leave at least 3 spots clean in the forwards for later in the season.

Tooserious is a good source for the positions as they were that season. Basically Laird, Mills, Stewart, Lloyd, Crisp, Ryan, Ridley and Short were all top 11 and top 10. Dawson and Rich the other two, Dawson was well back and Rich was top 20ish.
I agree entirely, there's questions on all the defenders and I'm feeling much better about the mids and forwards.

Sicily - Forward rumours refuse to die.
Stewart - Tags, tough early schedule.
Docherty - Durability, role questions.
Dawson - Tags, position?
Hurn - Age.
Saad - Breakout on low volume always a concern and where do the extra 5 points come from?
Dale - Similar to Saad really.
Witherden - Is he even best 22?
Brayshaw - Role, other players to take back their roles?
You can probably spin a few the other way but I personally have a very hard time saying any of them are underpriced or value.
Which then pushes us down to the actual guys that you can make that case for and I'd say all are similarly risky.
Basically every time I analyse guys down back I keep coming back to them not being as good an option as equivalents elsewhere, like I'd much prefer Steele to Stewart/Docherty types for example. Rozee or Taranto compared to Daicos or Young.
I just hope the rookies give me what I want.
I also think there's at least some chance that Crisp and Short, among others, may well appear as defenders at round 6 and both would also be very strong options if they did.

I just think if his name wasnt Nick Daicos people would be alot more sceptical of a 2nd year player who we dont really know where he is going to play from one week to the next and how well he is going to deal with the inevitable attention he gets now the opposition know how good and damaging he is, he may very well just come out and dominate anyway but I'd like to see it first.
