St Kilda has turned to raw key forward Anthony Caminiti to help plug the holes in its attacking set-up this season after an electrifying intra-club performance.
The 196cm Caminiti will be unveiled at the club this week after impressing new coach Ross Lyon and list boss Stephen Silvagni with his marking power in a scratch match on Friday.
The Heidelberg product briefly trained at Carlton over the preseason but was lured across to Moorabbin where he could help cover injured star spearhead Max King and back-up tall Jack Hayes.

Caminiti, 19, has been picked up under the supplemental selection period rules, joining former Blue Liam Stocker at the Saints’ to help kick-off Lyon’s second stint as coach.
Caminiti played for Northern Knights in the NAB League last year and showed promise as a developing forward but was struck down by an ankle injury, hampering his draft chances.
But in one of the preseason’s biggest surprises he starred in match simulation on Friday at Moorabbin to seal the list spot and put himself in the running for early-season selection.

The Saints are desperate find a replacement to help cover the loss of Max King.
The Saints will likely give him the chance to showcase his wares in the two preseason games against Melbourne and Essendon over the next three weeks.
The injuries to spearhead King (shoulder) and ruckman Hayes (foot) have dealt a huge blow to the Saints who have spent this preseason bedding down a new game style designed to capitalise on the team’s running power for 2023.
While Caminiti will continue to build his fitness, he is considered a natural forward who could provide a strong marking target at the top level.

The club has also been impressed with top draft pick Mattaes Phillipou, who will push strongly for an early debut in the midfield, while playmaker Marcus Windhager has also shone over summer.
The Saints take on Fremantle in Round 1 at Marvel Stadium.

Fremantle Docker James Aish on spending more time in the midfield over summer as Matthew Johnson earns praise

Jordan McArdle
The West Australian
Sun, 12 February 2023 10:15AM
Jordan McArdle
James Aish has hinted that increased midfield time could be on the cards this season as Fremantle looks to youth to fill their vacant wing roles.
The 27-year-old, who split his time between the wing and backline last season with the odd defensive midfield assignment, starred in his new role in Saturday’s intra-club match at Cockburn.
With Travis Colyer and Nathan O’Driscoll among those not playing, uncapped midfielder Matthew Johnson, Ethan Hughes, Neil Erasmus, Liam Henry and draftee Conrad Wililams all got a run on the wings.
undefined
“Like all the good teams, we’re trying to build a good group of seven or eight mids each game who can rotate around, and that’s going to be important this year,” Aish told AFL.com.au.
“Last year I was able to show that I am capable of that when I get the opportunity. This summer I’ve had a fair bit of time inside in the match sim.
“Just using body work and being clean around the ball is how I try and help the guys out there and I enjoy it, so hopefully there is a bit more time.”
Matthew Johnson is in the mix for midfield minutes. YES
Speedy forward Michael Frederick, who was one of the stand-outs with two goals, praised Johnson on his performance as he closes in on a long-awaited AFL debut.
The second-year talent, whose first season was hampered by a foot issue, played a mix of inside midfield and wing, found plenty of the footy and was classy driving the ball into attack.
“I reckon Matt Johnson in the middle stood out to me,” Frederick told the club website.
“He’s been having a good building block in this pre-season since we’ve come back post-Christmas and he’s been getting it done inside.”
Henry put his hand up to fill a spot on the wing left by Carlton signing Blake Acres with an eye-catching display, using the ball well and providing some dash on the outside.
“It’s good to see him getting a touch on the wing and creating,” Frederick said.
“That’s what our wingers do, they help in defence and get the ball going forward so he’s a good link man.”
Experienced recruit Jaeger O’Meara was another player to grab Frederick’s attention over the pre-season.
The former Gold Coast and Hawthorn on-baller was also among the better players on ground.
“His leadership is what has stood out to me in the pre-season,” Frederick said.
“He’s always constructional and directional with his voice in team meetings and things like that so his leadership has been awesome.”

Now deep into preparations for this season, we look at every club, their key injuries, their pre-season flyers and what sits on the horizon when it comes to match simulation and early opponents.

ADELAIDE

2023 LEADERS

TBC. The Crows haven’t announced their 2023 leadership group yet among rampant speculation that a captaincy change from Rory Sloane could take place.

Sloane headlined a leadership group in 2022 that included Tom Doedee, Ben Keays, Reilly O’Brien and Brodie Smith, with Jordan Dawson elevated to it mid-season.

He is now looming as the one to watch in the race to be the next skipper of the Crows.

The Crows are looking at deploying former No. 2 draft pick Riley Thilthorpe more around the ground in the ruck after his first two years in the system as a key forward.

Pedlar has played a lot as a small forward while Milera looks to be locked in at half-back.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

2023 LEADERS

TBC. Marcus Bontempelli is expected to be the top dog again, but the club is yet to formally announce its leadership group for this season.

INJURY LIST

Adam Treloar (ankle) – Building his training loads and aiming to take part in the club’s practice game.

Tim O’Brien (hamstring tightness) – Likely to be back in main training in another two weeks.

Charlie Clarke (back) – Still recovering from back soreness and unlikely to be ready until start of the season.

Jedd Busslinger (shoulder) – Still another two months away as he recovers from a shoulder reconstruction.

PRE-SEASON FLYERS

After a disrupted start to the pre-season due to a knee infection, young gun Sam Darcy has made an impact on the track, impressing in match simulation last week. Track watchers have also noted Tom Liberatore’s fitness and work in the midfield, while Cody Weightman has also caught the eye when he has been deployed for bursts in the midfield over summer.

PRE-SEASON GAINS/MOVES

Former Demon Oskar Baker gets another chance to reboot his career at the Whitten Oval after the Bulldogs recruited him as a supplemental selection period signing in December. Baker played 15 games across his five years at the Demons. In positional moves, long-time forward Josh Bruce has made the switch to defence this summer.

WEST COAST

2023 LEADERS

Captain — Luke Shuey

Vice-captains — Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass

INJURY LIST

Luke Edwards (quad) – Training away from the main group again after a quad strain.

Jack Petruccelle (ankle) – Club is confident he will play pre-season games after jarring an ankle in match simulation last Friday.

Campbell Chesser (foot) – Not back in full training yet after missing all of last season, being eased back into drills.

Harry Barnett (ankle) – Had a pre-existing injury when drafted last year but progressing well and should join drills in coming weeks.

Rhett Bazzo (compassionate leave) – Back at the club this week after tragic death of mother Kylie but will be given as much time as he needs before joining full training.

PRE-SEASON FLYERS

Nic Naitanui dominated youngsters Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson in match simulation last week, while Oscar Allen kicked three goals and is back from injury. There are plenty of West Coast players who look fitter: Jeremy McGovern, Tim Kelly, Liam Ryan and Elliot Yeo all look in better nick than they were last year. Sam Petrevski-Seton has also impressed the club playing as a forward.

PRE-SEASON GAINS/MOVES

Jayden Hunt has shown a lot of dash in pre-season on a wing and at half back after shifting from Melbourne. The Eagles will return Allen to attack and are trialling skipper Shuey at half-back. Draftees Reuben Ginbey, Elijah Hewett and Noah Long have impressed and are in the mix for early opportunity.

SuperCoach Rookie Rankings: The top 5 defenders named
You’ve heard about the draftees and young guns impressing during pre-season – but which ones are the best KFC SuperCoach picks? The Phantom names his top defender rookies.
To help you start sorting the good from the bad, I’ve ranked the best cheapies in every position — with scoring potential, job security and price taken into account.

First up, the defenders.

It’s early, so expect these rankings to change as the pre-season rolls on.

For full profiles, check out the 2023 Rookie Bible here.
DEFENDERS
1. Reuben Ginbey

WC, $171,300
SC Ave 2022: 93 (U18 Champs)

Expensive, but, at the moment, looks the defender rookie we can be most sure about – in terms of Round 1 spot and role. At least until things become at bit more clearer in Brisbane – more on that soon. The 18-year-old is built like a brick you-know-what and arrived at the Eagles with senior WAFL experience under his belt. Ginbey, who averaged 93 KFC SuperCoach points and won 46 per cent of his possession in a contest at the under-18 championships, has impressed on the track over summer, where has been swapping with Elliot Yeo between the midfield and half-back. This versatility, with Ginbey playing a lot of junior football in defence before starring on-ball last year, is another big tick for his debut-season prospects.
Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: In my side and on-field – like he will be at the Eagles, who need to usher in its young talent.

2. Darcy Wilmot
Bris, $123,900
SC Ave 2022: 83 (VFL)

As mentioned, even Brisbane coach Chris Fagan – at least publicly – isn’t sure about how his half-back line will look in Round 1 against Port Adelaide. Rookie-price options Wilmot and Connor McKenna rotated through there, alongside key playmakers Daniel Rich and Kiedean Coleman in the recent internal trial. But Wilmot impressed on the big stage last season after replacing Noah Answerth for the qualifying final, posting scores of 52, 61 and 73 in the first three games of his career. Importantly, he proved his worth up higher on a wing, too. Given those appearances weren’t in the home-and-away season, he keeps his $123k price tag for 2023, and that’s a big reason for his No. 2 ranking here.

Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: $123k rookies who scored a 73 in their last game are rare. Wilmot was the youngest player drafted in 2021, so another pre-season is huge for his development. A lock if named – and I’m tipping he will be.

ULTIMATE GUIDE: PHANTOM’S VERDICT ON THE MID-PRICE BARGAINS

Is it Lachie Cowan time at Carlton? Picture: Michael Klein

3. Lachie Cowan
Carl, $117,300
SC Ave 2022: 141 (NAB League)

Zac Williams’ season-ending injury – and Oleg Markov signing with Collingwood - may have just opened the door for one of the best KFC SuperCoach scorers of last year’s draft to play in Round 1. Cowan averaged 27 disposals – 20 of them kicks – eight intercepts, eight rebound-50s and 141 points in the NAB League last year – third behind Will Ashcroft and Elijah Tsatas. Cowan’s strength is his run-and-carry, but he also makes good decisions with the ball in hand. “We’ve got a young kid in Lachie Cowan who was drafted at the end of last year who is very exciting,” star defender Jacob Weitering said on SEN when talking about who could fill the hole left by Williams.

Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: A bench lock – maybe even more – if he can prove he’s the man to step up.

4. Connor McKenna
Bris, $167,500
SC Ave 2020: 61 (Essendon)

In the year before he retired to head back to Ireland, McKenna averaged 80 KFC SuperCoach points in 21 games for the Bombers. The season before that in 2018, it was 74 in 18 games. Those sort of numbers should price him at more than $400k. But after his two-year absence from the AFL, the 26-year-old, who has 79 games to his name, is available for less than $200k. It’s too early to say he will slot straight into Brisbane’s best 22, but if he does, McKenna looms as one of the KFC SuperCoach bargains of 2023.

Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: With Brisbane’s running-defender stocks, and some talk of him playing forward, it’s still an ‘if’. Probably have to pick him if he is going to start at half-back in Round 1, but his price, along with that uncertainty, keeps him at No. 4 for now.

Hawthorn draftee Josh Weddle is eyeing a Round 1 debut. Picture: Morgan Hancock/Getty Images

5. Josh Weddle
Haw, $130,800
SC Ave 2022: 83 (U18 Champs)

One of the most-athletic prospects drafted last year, Weddle has impressed during his first pre-season at Hawthorn. Last year, the teenager averaged 15 disposals, six intercepts and 83 KFC SuperCoach points for Vic Metro, playing as a defender, who not only beats his man – in the air and on the ground – but one who rebounds the other way. Over summer, however, he’s been training with the midfield group as a wingman as the Hawks look to use the 191cm Weddle’s size and elite endurance further up the ground.

Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: If you could be sure any team was going to give their young players a chance, it would be Hawthorn. And the do love Weddle. Too expensive for the bench? Maybe. But see how the pre-season plays out before making the call.

Smoky: Max Michalanney (Adel $135,300)
Taylor Walker singled out Adelaide’s father-son recruit as one who has been ‘outstanding’ on the track this pre-season. And it’s not just Walker who has been impressed, with those in the know suggesting the classy defender is on track for a Round 1 debut. He wasn’t able to show the full extent of his offensive game at SANFL League level and the under-18 championships last year, and that’s why there has been little chatter about him in fantasy circles. But Michalanney gets in great spots to win the ball back off the opposition and is very composed with it going the other way. Just keep an eye on him during the practice matches.

Other names to watch: Corey Wagner, Campbell Chesser, Campbell Chesser, Caleb Mitchell, Rhett Montgomerie, Jakob Ryan.

Have all of those 5 currently - Cowan would be a huge bonus if he can impress over the preseason games & cement a spot in the 22 for round 1
Really lost confidence with the rookie backs recently. I think going light is going to be tricky. Feel like Brisbane are going to be painful and alternate weeks between Wilmot and McKenna until they settle on what they want/need, pending injuries (just my gut feel). Hopefully Constable gets early games, re the article from BB.

KFC SuperCoach 2023: The Phantom’s rookie rankings in every position
In previous seasons, most of the top-scoring KFC SuperCoaches rookies have come from the midfield. Is it the same in 2023? The Phantom ranks the best cheapie options.

The key to success in KFC SuperCoach is nailing your rookie-price selections.
To help you start sorting the good from the bad, I’ve ranked the best cheapies in every position — with scoring potential, job security and price taken into account.
It’s early, so expect these rankings to change as the pre-season rolls on.

For full profiles, check out the 2023 Rookie Bible here.

MIDFIELDERS
1. Will Ashcroft
Bris, $202,800
SC Ave 2022: 159 (NAB League)

In his 21 games last year, across the VFL, NAB League and national under-18 carnival, Ashcroft tallied 140 KFC SuperCoach points in 16 of them. The father-son gun, who is as ready-to-go as any top draftee in recent years – and that includes Nick Daicos, Sam Walsh and Matt Rowell – averaged 34 disposals and 159 points for Sandringham at under-18 level and posted scores of 119, 126, 146 in three dominant VFL performances for the Lions.
Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: From what we’ve seen at Brisbane training, he will get midfield minutes, and could even out-do Walsh’s 87-point debut season average. Forget the price-tag, just pick him.

2. Will Phillips
NM, $158,300
SC Ave 2022: DNP

Last year was a write-off for the young Kangaroos midfielder, who battled glandular fever and didn’t play one game. But that means a discounted KFC SuperCoach price tag for the player who was taken at pick 3 in the 2020 draft – one who has enjoyed a blistering pre-season. Phillips averaged 22 disposals and 103 KFC SuperCoach in his bottom-age NAB League year, playing behind Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson at Oakleigh. And, while he struggled to really find his feet in his debut season of 2021, there were enough signs. The tough, clean on-baller won 40 per cent of his possession in a contest during his first year at the top level, and recorded eight contested possessions or more in three of his final six matches, resulting in KFC SuperCoach scores of 72, 55 and 67.
Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: Has put in the work over summer and has been a big part of the midfield rotation during match-sim. A great on-field pick this year.

Will Phillips is raring to go this season. Picture: Jake Nowakowski
3. Blake Drury
NM, $102, 400, Fwd
SC Ave 2022: 84 (Under 18 Champs)

Picked in the rookie draft after impressing with his decision-making, foot skills and speed as a high half-forward for Vic Metro and through the midfield in the NAB League. But with Tarryn Thomas, who had be training for a role at half-back, stepping away from the club, North Melbourne looks set to take advantage of Drury’s strengths in defence. And the 178cm teenager has made an impressive start, hitting targets and mopping up in the back-half – in Caleb Daniel fashion – during match sim.
Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: Too early to call him Caleb Daniel 2.0, but he’s been hitting targets in a similar role over summer, and is big Round 1 chance. With a basement-price tag and dual-position status, Drury is a bench lock.
4. Matthew Johnson
Freo, $123,900
SC Ave 2022: 85 (VFL)

Took a while to get going in his first season on the list, after battling early injury, but pick 21 from the 2021 draft showed impressive signs at WAFL level as the year went on. The classy, 192cm midfielder, who arrived at the club with senior experience, averaged 85 points in 14 state-league matches, with his 25-disposal, 143-point performance against East Perth the highlight. And all the talk from the west has been positive this summer, with Johnson catching the eye through the middle and out on a wing during Fremantle’s match-sim sessions and intra-club match. Helping the second-year Docker’s Round 1 case is his versatility, with Johnson possessing the running ability and class to help cover the Blake Acres’ void on the outside, as well as play on-ball, where his future probably lies.
Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: Has plenty of weapons and has done all the right things on the track. As good as the Dockers core is, a few kids might step up again in 2023. On my bench.

Could Oskar Baker play on a wing for the Bulldogs in Round 1? Picture: Michael Klein
5. Oskar Baker
WB, $123,900
SC Ave 2022: 91 (VFL)

This time last year, we were talking about who would address the Bulldogs’ need for run on wing – it’s why KFC SuperCoaches were hopeful now-delisted mature-ager Charlie Parker was a chance. And that was with Lachie Hunter in the side. Hunter is now at Melbourne, the former home of Baker, who couldn’t break through into the senior team last year, despite consistent form on a wing in the VFL. The 24-year-old posted seven KFC SuperCoach tons and averaged 21 disposals, five marks, five score involvements, four inside 50s, four intercepts and 91 points in 20 matches. More importantly, he’s featured prominently on a wing during match-sim at his new club.
Phantom’s pre-practice match verdict: We know Luke Beveridge loves a role player, and Baker could come straight in and play one for the Bulldogs. Does that guarantee KFC SuperCoach points? No, but it could be a lot more than others at $123k have.
Next in line
Angus Sheldrick, Oliver Hollands, Cam Mackenzie, Mattaes Phillipou, Darcy Jones
A host of top picks from last year – Hollands, Mackenzie and Phillipou – are right in the Round 1 frame at their respective clubs. But, will their output justify the elevated price tag? That answer might become a bit more clearer after the practice matches. Sheldrick, however, is one who could push his way up the list after averaging 23 disposals, 12 contested possessions and 101 points in the VFL last year and impressing on-ball in recent Sydney match-sim.
Smoky
Jack Bytel/Connor Blakely
Bytel finished with 17 contested possessions, 12 clearances, 12 tackles and 184 points in his final VFL game last year, and will be one to consider if he can force his way past a few similar-type midfielders at the Saints. Former Docker Blakely is another to keep an eye – can break the recycled-player curse at the Suns?

IMO McKenna will be a lock. Wilmot will be fighting with Answerth as to whether or not he'll get a gig. McKenna had his choice of teams - he's not going to go to a team to play reserves, and Brisbane wouldn't be recruiting him if they didn't feel he fits a need.

Answerth can't kick, Wilmot still has development time to put in (has promise, but not truly composed with the ball in his hand), McKenna is ready made. As a team aiming for a premiership, that's a clear benefit.

Brisbane could debut five new Lions in round 1 as their pair of Irish defensive recruits make strong claims to take on Port Adelaide after flawless summers for Chris Fagan’s side.
The Lions were trounced by Geelong in the preliminary final but won two finals in another year of growth, so five round 1 changes for that preliminary final side would normally be highly unusual.
Will Ashcroft has had a super summer as the No. 1 overall pick and has already assured himself of a spot in Brisbane’s starting midfield.

But ex-Essendon defender Conor McKenna might even eclipse him as the SuperCoach recruit of the season ($167,500) given the impression he has made at Brisbane.

Brisbane beat three rivals to snare his signature after he un-retired from football and he has shown the same line-breaking talents that made him a fan favourite in his early years at Essendon.
While Brisbane has prioritised greater team defence over summer they are also desperate to add burst from half back and McKenna has provided that in spades.
In the club’s recent match simulation sessions he has been joined by fellow Irishman Darragh Joyce in the 18-man A team playing as a third defender against the B side.
Joyce played only 13 games in five seasons at St Kilda before being delisted but the Lions want the 195cm defender to play on difficult match-ups alongside Darcy Gardiner and Harris Andrews.

Ahead of the club’s two official scratch matches Joyce has that position to lose given Marcus Adams is on the club’s inactive list with concussion issues.
Free agency acquisition Jack Gunston has also had an excellent summer and while he was absent for last week’s intra-club with a wedding he hasn’t missed a beat this year.

He will be an immediate upgrade on departing free agent Dan McStay and has already provided leadership to the team’s key forwards as he imparts wisdom on leading patterns and attacking synergy.
Dogs midfielder Josh Dunkley has also joined the club in a trade and will provide leadership and grunt to a midfield that was overwhelmed by the Cats.
Brisbane is confident Dayne Zorko (hamstring) and Darcy Gardiner (shoulder) will be fit to get valuable match practice within two weeks.
Cam Rayner has been playing half back in recent match simulation as an education on how defenders play and work off their opponent.
With a month remaining before that clash against Port Adelaide the Lions are yet to decide how to best use him but believe he now has a second string to his bow.

ADELAIDE

B: B. Smith, J. Butts, T. Doedee

HB: J. Dawson, N. Murray, W. Milera

Sub: C. Jones

Notable absentees: M. Crouch, N. McHenry, E. Himmelberg, J. Hately

Where do the Crows play Rory Sloane? The former captain has been trialled all over the ground in pre-season but might have to make do with a place on the wing.

Luke Pedlar’s fine pre-season has Ned McHenry potentially in trouble while an injury interrupted one for Josh Worrell so far has opened the door for father-son pick Max Michalanney. Matt Crouch has been praised by Matthew Nicks for his pre-season but still looks to be on the outer.

Notable absentees: D. Wilmot, D. Robertson, D. Fort, J. Payne

Irishmen Darragh Joyce and Conor McKenna have quickly firmed as likely round 1 participants given both have been exceptional in match play. No. 1 overall pick Will Ashcroft and recruits Jack Gunston and Josh Dunkley are locks. All of that means if Brisbane gets to round 1 fully fit last year’s emerging talent including Kiddy Coleman, Darcy Wilmot, Deven Robertson and Jack Payne will be on the borderline of selection. That is good news for Chris Fagan given the selection pressure it will force upon a side that won 17 total games in 2022.

Notable absentees: S. Walsh, Z. Williams, M. Cottrell, J. Martin, P. Dow, C. Marchbank, J. Honey, L. Plowman

There are a few injury issues for the Blues to start the season, including Sam Walsh (back), Zac Williams (knee) and Matthew Cottrell (foot). Mitch McGovern and Jack Martin have also had interrupted summers. But the spine looks strong and recruit Blake Acres should instantly add plenty of run on one wing.

Notable absentees: A. Johnson, B. McCreery, T. Bianco, N. Kreuger, B. Frampton

There’s a serious squeeze for spots – particularly through the midfield – with the Magpies enjoying almost a clean bill of health as things stand. McCreery is stiff to miss, after playing 22 games last season. Ash Johnson played the final nine games last season but the arrival of recruit Dan McStay leaves Collingwood with another target in attack to help Mihocek.

Notable absentees: A. McDonald-Tipungwuti, B. Hobbs, S. Weideman, Z. Reid

The Bombers’ 23 looks great on paper and Nic Martin has been on fire in the pre-season which has included a trial in the onball group. Expect Will Setterfield to have a big impact in the engine room and Dylan Shiel has had one of his best pre-seasons. Question marks remain over some of the forwards’ fitness after some niggles but they should be OK for the season opener. Jye Menzie has been one of the big improvers over summer, potentially locking McDonald-Tipungwuti and Davey Jr out of the team, early. Nik Cox will start down back.

Notable absentees: C. Wagner, T. Emmett

Fremantle’s coaches face their toughest calls on the wings and up forward. Ethan Hughes, Liam Henry, Neil Erasmus and Matthew Johnson have all rotated outside throughout summer, but Aish and O’Driscoll were regulars there last year. Jye Amiss gets the nod over Josh Treacy up forward given Fremantle will need insurance for the injury-prone Matt Taberner and Nat Fyfe, and the Dockers mosquito fleet is set. Aside from a few niggles here and there, Fremantle boasts a largely clean bill of health. Brennan Cox (knee infection), Corey Wagner (hamstring), Nathan O’Driscoll (foot) and Tom Emmett (ankle) are all under minor injury clouds but nobody has been ruled out of round 1 yet.

Notable absentees: T. Hawkins, M. O’Connor

Tom Hawkins is unlikely to win his race against time in his recovery from a serious foot injury for the season opener while Gary Rohan faces tough opposition from ex-Magpie Ollie Henry for a spot in the 22. Fellow premiership player Mark O’Connor also gets squeezed out in favour of former GWS Giant Tanner Bruhn.

I/C: J. Lukosius, B. Humphrey, E. Hollands, S. Flanders

Sub: A. Davies

Notable absentees: W. Powell, J. Jeffrey, A. Sexton, J. Anderson, C. Blakely

Charlie Constable has been earmarked for a role down back and only needs to continue his pre-season form to be handed a round 1 berth, while Sam Flanders has been the pre-season breakout after exceptional VFL form last year.

Lukosius will play half forward and Hollands has played plenty of pre-season time on a wing. As for Izak Rankine’s vacancy, all of Jeffrey, top 10 pick Humphrey, Sexton and Malcolm Rosas will be looking for a big year to fill those shoes.

Lachie Weller should be ready by round 1 off a summer of recovery while Wil Powell isn’t yet ready off a medium-level hamstring injury.

Harry Himmelberg will return forward as he looks to form a partnership with No. 1 draft pick Aaron Cadman who is a near certain starter. The query is who plays at centre half back, youngster Leek Aleer has impressed and could get first nod ahead of Lachie Keeffe and Phil Davis.

Finn Callaghan is flying and strengthens the Giants midfield depth while Callan Ward has been training as a forward so expect a shuffle of magnets to the usual starting line up.

It is a young looking Hawks side after senior players including Jack Gunston, Ben McEvoy, Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara and Liam Shiels departed the club over the off-season. Top draftees Cameron Mackenzie and Josh Weddle look strong chances to make early debuts, while recruits Lloyd Meek and Karl Amon will slot straight in. Key forward Mitch Lewis – who kicked 37 goals from 15 games last year – will miss the early part of the season with a sprained ACL.

Notable absentees: C. Salem, B. Brown, M. Hibberd

Christian Salem is the only confirmed out from the Demons’ best 23 but they do have solid depth in that area with Trent Rivers and Jake Bowey more than capable replacements.

Jacob Van Rooyen has been the talk of the pre-season and may edge out Ben Brown for a round 1 berth after Brown has had a slower pre-season after he underwent surgery on his knee in December.

Notable absentees: J. Stephenson, D. Tucker, D. Howe, G. Wardlaw, C. Coleman-Jones

Charlie Comben is the one to watch to see if he can secure the centre half forward spot next to Nick Larkey. The Roos desperately need someone to lighten the load on Cameron Zurhaar, but Comben, Paul Curtis and Harry Sheezel have turned heads over summer with their encouraging form. Will Phillips will return to the engine room after some health issues and Jaidyn Stephenson faces a battle to claim a round 1 berth after some patchy performances over summer.
