Will Ashcroft
Midfielder
Club: Brisbane Lions
Games: 0
Drafted: No.2, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 78kg
Height: 182cm
2022 National Champs153 SuperCoach points, 32.8 disposals, 7.5 inside-50s, 3.5 marks, 8.8 clearances, 0.5 goals, 8.8 score involvements, 5.8 tackles (four games) 2022 NAB League159 SuperCoach points, 34.5 disposals, 7 inside-50s, 3.3 marks, 8.6 clearances, 0.4 goals, 8.5 score involvements, 4.9 tackles (14 games) VFL130 ranking points, 29.3 disposals, 5.7 inside-50s, 3.3 marks, 5 clearances, 0.7 goals, 8.7 score involvements, 7.3 tackles (three games)
The son of a gun looks a lock to make an early-season AFL debut. The midfielder could be used in a range of positions and gets in the right spots to rack up plenty of the ball. Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said at the draft he would have picked Ashcroft to play last season had he been available, so good was his VFL form
Reuben Ginbey
Defender/Midfielder
Club: West Coast Eagles
Games: 0
Drafted: No.9, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 82kg
Height: 189cm
2022 National Champs 93 SuperCoach points, 20.8 disposals, 9.8 contested possessions, 5.5 score involvements, 4.0 tackles score (4 games) 2022 WAFL 57 SuperCoach points, 10 disposals, 4 intercept possessions (4 games)
Is closing in on an AFL debut in Round 1 for the Eagles. A powerful midfielder, Ginbey has been blowing people away at West Coast training. Should be a SuperCoach lock especially with defender status as well
Lachie Cowan
Defender
Club: Carlton
Games: 0
Drafted: No.30, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 81kg
Height: 187cm
2022 NAB League U18s141 SuperCoach points, 26.0 disposals, 20.3 kicks, 8.3 rebound 50s, 8.0 intercept possessions, 2.2 intercept marks (12 games) 2022 National Champs100 SuperCoach points, 22.3 disposals, 5.3 intercept possessions (4 games)
Could Cowan prove to be Carlton’s Zac Williams replacement? While there is no expectation on the Blues draftee to fill this significant void, injuries to Williams and Jordan Boyd mean Cowan is in the mix to feature early on. Cowan has line-breaking speed, power and a damaging kick which has been on display in the Blues’ match simulation. A live-trade with Collingwood saw the Blues snare Cowan last year, who was the third-ranked player in the NAB League behind top-five picks Will Ashcroft and Elijah Tsatas.
Elijah Hewett
Midfielder/Forward
Club: West Coast Eagles
Games: 0
Drafted: No.14, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 84kg
Height: 185cm
2022 National Champs99 ranking points, 19.5 disposals, 10.5 contested possessions, 4.5 tackles (4 games)2022 WAFL61 ranking points, 13.8 disposals, 5.6 contested possessions, 3.0 score involvements (9 games) 2022 WAFL Reserves 163 ranking points, 31 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 9 score involvements, 6 tackles (1 game)
Some clubs were wary about Hewett but the Eagles loved some of the mouth-watering performances he produced during the year. And the midfield tough nut, who used to have a passion for baseball, looks to be well and truly in the mix for a Round 1 spot after featuring on the stronger side during match sim in training.
Alwyn Davey Jr
Midfielder/Forward
Club: Essendon
Games: 0
Drafted: No.46, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 76kg
Height: 180cm
2022 National Champs77 SuperCoach points, 13.8 disposals, 3.3 inside-50s, 3 marks, 0.5 clearances, 1.0 goals, 6.5 score involvements, 2.5 tackles (four games)2022 NAB League89 ranking points, 16 disposals, 3.2 inside-50s, 3 marks, 2.2 clearances, 0.3 goals, 5.2 score involvements, 2.8 tackles (six games)2022 VFL44 ranking points, 7 disposals, 3 inside-50s, 1 mark, 1 goal, 3 score involvements, 4 tackles (one game)
Looks a serious chance to make his AFL debut early, potentially as early as Round 1 against Hawthorn, as he has fitted perfectly into the Essendon program. Both the Davey twins have been a part of the James Hird Academy, so feel familiar about the set-up out at The Hangar. Will initially start in attack, but has the potential - and talent - to one day become a good midfielder.
Jye Menzie
Forward
Club: Essendon
Games: 2
Drafted: No.18, 2022 Mid-season Draft
Age: 20
Weight: 79kg
Height: 181cm
2022 VFL 74 SuperCoach points, 13.0 disposals, 6.1 score involvements, 1.6 goals (8 games)
Showed some good signs in a recent match simulation when playing forward and will benefit from what was his first full AFL preseason campaign. Played two games towards the tail end of last year, scoring a goal in the final round loss to Richmond
Josh Weddle
Defender/Midfielder
Club: Hawthorn
Games: 0
Drafted: No.18, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 92kg
Height: 192cm
2022 National Champs83 SuperCoach points, 15 disposals, 3.5 rebound 50s, 4.3 marks, 5.8 intercept possessions, 1.3 intercept marks, 3 tackles (four games) 2022 NAB League59 SuperCoach points, 12.8 disposals, 1.7 rebound 50s, 4.5 marks, 1.8 intercept possessions, 0.3 intercept marks, 2.2 tackles (six games)
When a new recruit comes out and wins the first time-trial of a new year, you have to sit back and take notice. The Hawks have done that with Josh Weddle, who assistant coach Chris Newman suggested was one of the standout performers in a fitness sense of the summer. He is a versatile player who hasn’t missed a beat all preseason, playing wing/half back. If he can maintain that form and fitness in the next month, he will be knocking the senior door. Another SuperCoach must
Judd McVee
Defender/Midfielder
Club: Melbourne
Games: 0
Drafted: No.18, 2021 Rookie Draft
Age: 19
Weight: 72kg
Height: 183cm
2022 VFL 48 SuperCoach points, 11.6 disposals, 2.7 marks (19 games)
Could loom as a potential replacement for Christian Salem who continues to battle thyroid issues. A rebounding defender of similar size who could feature early in the season
Jacob van Rooyen
Forward
Club: Melbourne
Games: 0
Drafted: No.19, 2021 National Draft
Age: 19
Weight: 93kg
Height: 193cm
2022 VFL 85 SuperCoach points, 11.6 disposals, 1.9 contested marks, 2.0 goals (18 games)
Had been in the conversation for a game at the end of last season and again remains in the frame. Has added size over the summer and looms as a potential forward target particularly with Sam Weideman now at Essendon. Has added plenty of fitness
Blake Drury
Forward
Club: North Melbourne
Games: 0
Drafted: No.1, 2022 Rookie Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 73kg
Height: 176cm
2022 National Champs84 SuperCoach points, 19 disposals, 5.3 inside-50s, 3.3 marks, 2 clearances, 0.8 goals, 7.5 score involvements, 2.5 tackles (four games) 2022 NAB League91 SuperCoach points, 18.7 disposals, 5 inside-50s, 6.1 marks, 1.0 goals, 5.7 score involvements, 2.1 tackles (seven games)
Has made a shift to defence since starting at Arden St and is hopeful of making an impact early in the season. Is particularly noted for his work ethic and skills and, when given the chance, could look to cement his spot
Jack Bytel
Midfielder
Club: St Kilda
Games: 16
Drafted: No.48, 2018 National Draft
Age: 23
Weight: 84kg
Height: 189cm
2022 VFL118 SuperCoach points, 25.9 disposals, 13.3 contested possessions, 6.3 tackles (14 games)
Looks to have finally put his injury issues behind him, but he will face stiff competition in the hunt for midfield roles. Was granted a one-year deal at the end of last season. He has had a good preseason, but needs to make an impression to keep his spot beyond this year
Mattaes Phillipou
Forward/Midfielder
Club: St Kilda
Games: 0
Drafted: No.10, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 89kg
Height: 190cm
2022 SANFL U18s144 ranking points, 28 disposals, 12.3 contested possessions, 12 goals (total)2022 National Champs102 ranking points, 16.5 disposals, 8 contested possessions, 4 goals (total)
If you haven’t got him in your SuperCoach team, hit the refresh button and key his name into your side. Now! He will be playing sooner rather than later, as the Saints can barely believe how well he has settled into the club and the system. Like Windhager, he has acted like a sponge and has thrived in whatever preseason challenge his coaches have given him. His natural confidence shouldn’t be confused with cockiness. He’s a good kid and could be a star. Look up the Saints’ recent social media post which showed Phillipou giving the ball off to Windhager before getting it back again. There is your future right there, Saints fans
Noah Long
Forward/Midfielder
Club: West Coast Eagles
Games: 0
Drafted: No.58, 2022 National Draft
Age: 18
Weight: 74kg
Height: 178cm
2022 National Champs 78 ranking points, 16.5 disposals, 11.3 uncontested possessions, 5.5 score involvements, 1.3 goals (four games) 2022 NAB League116 ranking points, 24.3 disposals, 5.3 score involvements, 0.8 goals goal (three games - not including one injury-affected game)
He might have a baby-faced and skinny but the Eagles’ last pick of the 2022 draft has become a bolter at West Coast this season. After becoming a crafty forward, Long is well and truly in the mix for a Round 1 debut this season with a small forward spot available now that Junior Rioli has moved to Port Adelaide
