Where did you get these stats from? Thanks.
https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/thre...b-18th-arden-st.1346045/page-20#post-78009188

I only watched the first half, he switched to the 2nds team in the 2nd half and probably played pretty pure midfield from that point (they also balanced the teams out considerably at that point). I'd hazard to guess that he had about a third of those stats in the first half but would love to see the breakdown.

It's not that he was bad by any means but I didn't like the role at all and didn't think he did anything to demand picking him. Will definitely be watching the preseason games as he's been on my radar since things opened and he had FWD status but if he plays that role again I'm not sure there's any stats that could change my mind. He's had 4 out of 13 seasons that he's scored at a passing grade, 1 was outstanding and 1 was very good with two reluctant pass marks. At the end of the day 9 out of 13, coming back from what he had on the wrong side of 30 with several emerging young players at his position is a pick that I want to see some really strong boxes ticked.

The 2nd half may very well have been huge, I didn't watch it. He may also have put up much better stats than the eye test in the first half but I can only write what I saw :)
I appreciate your postings and wasn't trying to imply that you were wrong in your judgements or anything. I didn't watch the intra so can't comment on how he looked, and maybe he did look unimpressive. I was just surprised when I saw those stats, which look very good despite him playing forward for large stretches (particularly the clearance and tackle numbers). Obviously we have to wait until the actual practice matches to see what his role is, but if he's back playing mostly inside mid it'll be hard to ignore him.

Port Adelaide have put up Q2 and Q3 of their trial so watched them, not a huge amount of changes at the HT break so still pretty good indicator though obviously prefer Q1 if it was available.

General - Very scrappy game, didn't feel quite as intense as the Kangas or Crows games to me but there was also a bigger mismatch in talent here, the black team was the probables and the white side was about half SANFL guys and they'd made no real effort to balance a midfield with senior guys like the other two games. Was a swirly wind which didn't help with the scrap factor.

Not many guys missing, Butters, Sinn and Finlayson the only ones of note to me, of those Butters is clearly the guy who has the most potential structural impact and could shift roles around.

Worth noting that there were very few goals in both quarters and what goals there were tended to be in 2 minute bursts, does make recognising some positions a lot more difficult as you don't get the reset to confirm.

Numerical order again...

Jonas/Aliir/DBJ - Will lump them together, all playing the exact same roles as last couple of years in the main defense.

SPP - Playing the HF role he played last year, didn't look to have changed at all, looked fit.

Burton - Was taking the majority of kick-ins, I didn't notice anyone else take one but I did miss a couple.

Marshall/Dixon - Were the main two KPF for the black side, same roles as LY, Dixon only played the first half. Nothing of note here.

Houston - Playing HB, got a fair bit of it. Probably lands in no man's land again but he will always remind of a Sinclair type last year, it feels like there's a season where he goes huge given the skillset but trying to pick it at this point is a fool's errand.

Farrell - Playing a HB role also for the main side, was good, he could score very well with his skillset but getting to the too many chef region with all their rebounders.

Duursma - Was on a wing for the black side in Q2 (and Q1 from the commentary), switched to the white side in Q3 with Bonner. Suggests to me that he's right on the fringe of the 22 which matches his performance in prior years. He was actually better in Q3 for the white side weirdly but did nothing to impress me.

Boak - Played primarily HF like he did the 2nd half of last year, some midfield bursts, especially late in Q2. Looked fit but not for mine, think he will get FWD DPP though almost certainly and is a great draft style option as a result.

McKenzie - Playing for the 2nds, was really good though.

Fantasia - Had a forward pocket role but a higher pocket, still not a good fantasy role and at 200k he's probably too expensive for the role but he looked fit and he played well and his style does lead to more points than most pockets produce. I hope there's better options but he'd be in play in that role. Butters and Finlayson both could push him out though depending how they go structurally. Played solidly.

Bergman - Looked to be wing in Q2 and then more HB in Q3 (believe DBJ didn't play Q3), was huge in Q3 and clear best on for that quarter, was solid but not a standout in Q2, still he significantly outplayed Duursma and outplayed Bonner in what appears to be a contest to me. Being the one who was black team for both quarters of that trio also has to bode well for him. Nothing price unfortunately.

Rioli - Did a couple of nice things, pretty pure FP role. No value here for fantasy but will pretty solidly replace Gray.

Wines - Only played the first half, main midfield for the first 75% of Q2, then went to a wing at the end (things got a bit funky at that point positionally). He looked alright but was very going through the motiony.

Clurey - Playing for the 2nds, was solid.

JHF - He looks really chunky, just a weird body shape right now, had one really good burst play where you can see the Danger or Dusty comparison, otherwise was pretty poor, got caught with the ball a few times by the SANFL guys. Role wasn't great, didn't sniff the midfield until late in Q2(funky time) and then had solid midfield minutes in Q3 after Wines was done. Didn't really make the most of the midfield minutes. As someone who rates him and wants to pick him, he definitely moved me in the wrong direction, after his questionable work ethic and issues being a team player at NM I'd really hoped he might have come out with better energy.

Georgiades - Played forward, played well.

Rozee - Probably the standout, albeit I'd have only wanted him in DT on this game. Like I don't expect Taranto to suddenly learn to kick I dare say this was just a bad game for him and he'll go back to his standard of classy as ****. Was everywhere and the ball just followed him. Spent about 70% of both quarters on ball and his spread work was exceptional until the aforementioned kicking issues! Went forward for probably 15-20% of each quarter where he is always dangerous as well. He was basically my first picked this year so I'm looking for reasons that I'm wrong here and honestly came up pretty blank. Butters factor is definitely the thing I'm watching for in preseason as that remains the unanswered question. Physically he looked great, role was great, kicking was terrible

Pasini - Played for the 2s as a KPD, he was really good and could definitely play some games this year, albeit their depth is absurd at the position with Clurey and McKenzie also very good.

Hayes - Played as a KPF for the seconds, actually showed vastly improved mobility on last season and did some nice things. Looks to be 4th in the ruck pecking order to me though.

Bonner - White for Q2, switched with Duursma in Q3, played wing exclusively from what I could tell. He was better than Duursma but well behind Bergman for mine.

Teakle - Was the #1 ruck for the black side, I thought Lycett beat him thoroughly in the ruck but he was very good around the ground, had a couple of brilliant moments and all round positioning was very solid. Definitely an interesting situation for Port. I think he can be a very solid AFL player, more in the ROB vein than Gawn/NicNat but he shows plenty. At 23 compared to Lycett's 30, I can definitely see the reasoning for playing him at AFL level. That both of them can play forward definitely makes the Finlayson question interesting also. I honestly don't know what I'd do which makes predicting what Ken might do even harder!

Drew - Was on a wing for the majority of the game, a very interesting move given his endurance and defensive running I'd imagine they're going a Brayshaw at Melbourne type role. He could be very good at it and given their one way burst runners on the other wing makes sense, especially given the midfield group is also pretty much forward running. Would be huge for Butters and Rozee if he is to stay on a wing as only Wines had more midfield time in the 2nd half of last season. It makes sense to me as Butters and Rozee both offer a lot more with ball and on the spread than he can and with Wines already there to bull Drew is kind of redundant in there. Will watch very closely to see if it continues.

10,000ed again...

Lycett - #1 ruck for the white side, no idea how to read into that, it definitely gives the impression they're going one ruck and that it's a genuine battle that Teakle is leading. I thought he played well, looked fit and to me clearly won the ruck contests. At 30 he's not ancient but definitely not young. Will be an interesting watch, I know from a fantasy perspective who I'd rather as their #1 but who knows how it plays out. Either way I'd say that unless someone get's injured, they're going to be problematic for each other as picks.

Scully - Reminds me a lot of Mitch Lewis where you watch their first game and are just puzzled how a ~200cm guy that moves like that and has clean hands can fall so far in the draft. I wouldn't expect he plays this year barring a couple of injuries but he looks a fantastic prospect to me and Port fans should be excited about him. Marshall and him could be a great long term KPF pairing. His kicking didn't look bad either.

Jones - What a weird one, he had probably the best role on the field, he took more CBA than anyone else by my count (not really close either) but he just didn't have much impact, he did have one lovely tap on to create an opening and, iirc, a goal at the end but just couldn't seem to get hands on the ball or really make the most of the position. Same thing as always for him, he has these moments where it's really good but just always seems to be slightly out of position or off line. Frustrating to watch because it feels like he could be anything but spends most of the time being nothing. Definitely will be watching the role though because he was clearly in the main midfield group and it takes a fair bit to be a main ball winning midfielder and not average 85+, which at his price would be a sound return. He's got the skills to score really well so will be a must watch. I'd definitely prefer Butters in the role and there's a gut feeling he was place holding Butters' position so they can practice their structures but if his role holds up with Butters he'll be hard to pass on for those looking at light back lines.

Burgoyne - Probably needs to be a solid 50k cheaper and no doubt Jones had a better role at a better price if you were picking one but he had a very nice HB role, he loves to ask for the ball and, despite today's evidence, is generally a very good ball user. He definitely looked to have retained his HB slot from last year and he played well. I don't see any reason he couldn't do similar to a Chapman type last year. I'd say he's well down the pecking order of the cheap back options because he's just a lot more expensive than most but could be a strong pick.

Visentini - Played as a KPF for the seconds in Q2, replaced Dixon in black team for Q3, he looks an impressive type and has filled out significantly since last year. Moves very well for the size and I liked that he threw his weight around a bit. Could definitely play AFL games this year and really just makes their messy ruck situation even messier.

McEntee - White team in Q2, switched into the black team for Q3 where he played as a small forward, think he replaced Wines who was replaced by JHF in the mids, that's what it looked like to me anyway. He's in the mix but at his price not relevant in that role. I'd say he's outside the best 22 though personally.

Mead - Played exclusively for the whites, he was pretty solid but also outside the main 22 for mine.

He actually played well and looked good, I just didn't like his role.

He definitely looked to have switched to the yellow side in 2nd half and was playing midfield so I expect it would have inflated his stats a bit.

Basically when he played midfield he looked great and if that's all he did I'd be saying he's an exceptional option that most should be picking, my concern is playing forward in a bad side is really bad for fantasy, he's a sneaky good forward but it's a bad fantasy role. The problem is as a forward that he tends to just anchor near the goals and use his strength mismatch on most people for scoring opportunities, it's effective but leaves a lot of the fantasy points on the board by not pushing higher up the ground which is how guys like Moore or Heeney are able to score really well from that position.

Cunnington in a pure midfield role is a lock, in a split role he's a watch but leaning towards no for mine. I still think he's their best midfielder though so can buy the case for the midfield role but with young guys like Phillips, LDU, Powell and even Simpkin going through there, does leave serious questions on how many minutes they give him, it would be a real surprise if he's a part of their next finals campaign, will be 32 this season, so it definitely makes sense to prioritise the development of their top draft picks over him, that he's also a better forward than any of them only hurts his cause!

I was just reading the article on the AFL website and this jumped out:

Geelong v Hawthorn, GMHBA Stadium, 4pm AEDT (8 x 30 min plus time on)

https://www.afl.com.au/news/876095/full-fixture-how-to-watch-the-2023-practice-games

Is it just me, or is that a seriously long match? The next longest is 6 × 25 min with no time on.
I think Freo and Adelaide are doing 7 "quarters" and the assumption is that they will be running a second 22 for parts of the game. I assume 3-4 quarters of the best 22 then get the rest a run.

That's not what the article says, so guessing it might have changed since then. Wouldn't surprise me.

240 mins plus 8 lots of time on v 150 mins max is a big difference in game lengths. I assume it would mean having VFL players play more than half of it. Can't see the best 22 playing any more than 3 of those "quarters" (eighths).

I think Hawks and Collingwood played a similar length last season.

Both sides have agreed to run their AFL and VFL lists, will be a good hit out for everyone, Geelong did the same thing with Collingwood in 2021.
