Correct, didnt play the last two games due to AC Joint soreness. Not sure if he is expected back next week, they were talking down the injury as more soreness and preventive. Others will see it as his ability to create injuries, rather than having a weakness (like hamstrings).
Butters has had shoulder issues in the past so could definitely be more weakness than anything, it's a dangerous combination though. Love him as a player but injuries becoming a real factor in his career already.

Don't go chasing preseason points. Time on ground for rookies, role changes and a good block of preseason training is all we should be looking at.
Exactly. There's always gaps in preseason information. Sometimes it's Coniglio and Kelly not playing against the magoos huge, and sometimes it's a senior player letting a young guy take kick-ins for development that isn't happening in the real stuff subtle. Another subtle example is a senior player playing in a mileage role for their training loads rather than their actual role, will often see this one where they fall into that high HF up and back role instead of a clearance midfield role for example, wing another position they can slide out to for this, Sloane is a name that definitely could be doing this for example.

I think the preseason is really useful for two main things.

1. Confirming roles for players at new clubs.
2. Confirming late season role changes have stuck.

Everything else is very noisy and can be heavily influenced. That said, it's always nice to see your players looking sharp and playing well and definitely a good sign for rookies to be playing at all.

I do wonder if anyone has ever tried to correlate preseason scoring with breakout seasons to see if there's anything there.

They should leave the ruck split the way they did between Darcy/Jackson, but will they? I think their coach said it'll be a weekly proposition what they go with.
ROB is a great matchup for Darcy in that he doesn't have any real speed away from the contest to get dangerous either and can't jump over him at centre bounces. I dare say we could get more Jackson against those guys who tend jump over him like a NicNat or those who spread hard on him like Gawn.

Definitely will be a flexible thing. If Darcy can put up 110+, he's probably going to have got the job done this year, there's scenarios for 120+ for about 4 other guys but Darcy can also do it and his scenarios (Jackson injury or just this role being a true indication) are as likely as the Gawn/Grundy injury to one scenario and probably more likely than the Marshall and/or English overcoming durability scenario.

I agree dont get carried away with preseason games even if he gets 35 touches it can be inflated due to other mids out weak opposition etc. But 50 touches is just insane and the fact that he is capable of getting 50 even in favourable circumstances probably still puts him in the 1% of players in the comp that are actually capable of doing it in the same circumstances. I think there's unjustified preseason hype and then there's performance that can't be ignored and 50 touches is one of them. The other one in recent memory was 2020 preseason when Petracca pumped out a 200! He then went on to average 117 after averaging 81 the season before.
There's a lot of players who can get 50 touches at a reserve level, there's even more that would do it if they were playing in an AFL side against a reserves side. For example Jye Bolton had 51 last year in the WAFL, I don't know if you remember the name but he was on the Pies list for a couple of years but couldn't get a game!

Yes it's a great achievement but I'd hazard there's a significant portion of AFL mids that could do it in that scenario.

Worrell with a hamstring injury in Q1.
So I wasn't imagining it

Cheers, sucks to hear, hopefully very minor, really liked him last year.

He's a midfielder, his best season was an M8 level scorer. Unless you genuinely think he can average 115+ and be a midfield keeper, you should not be starting him because keeper is his only acceptable outcome from his starting price.
I guess people will consider Whitfield because there is a good chance he will become a defender in 6 weeks. Then his price is very nice.

I really don't like that move unless you think he can hack it in the starting position, he only has to miss a game or two in that first month and he doesn't get the position change until halfway through the season for example. A guy like him is also always just an injury away from being swung to a new position.

I daresay he will get it but picking a guy who has to get it and doesn't even have that good a history is a pretty silly play. He's had one season scoring at a better than D6 level and one season at D6 level in 10 years. The season above D6 he missed 6 games, not far off the average across his career, and the D6 season was the COVID season where outside accumulators like him were, by and large, inflated by the changes implemented.

Yeah, totally agree.

Plus just seeing his name gives me a cold sweat.

Darcy getting clear HTA's, making ROB look pretty average.
ROB doesn't really need anyone else out there to make ROB look average.

Huge risk IMO to take a guy like Whitfield in the mids in hope for DPP. It's a no from me.
So thankful he doesn't have def status so I'm not baited in by him to start the season.

Also may have been covered, but thought I heard Grundy mention in an interview I saw on the news on Friday that the ruck split would look something like 70/30 for him/Gawn. Not sure I believe it and the numbers from the pre season game suggest otherwise, but figured I'd mention it.

Can we start all 3 of Green, Coniglio and Callahan?
GWS and Calahan just remind me of Dirty Harry

I know what you're thinking. "Do I have six GWS players or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this preseason excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is GWS, the most frustrating SC team in the world, and would blow your season clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

100% this.

I hope things have changed, as there's some serious talent there, but it's still GWS...

Its beyond me how ROB got that long term deal just looks exceedingly average to me, Strachan gives just as good account for himself and would be getting paid peanuts.
