SHEEZEL MOVED BACK BY CLARKO

Alastair Clarkson is considering reprogramming natural goalkicker Harry Sheezel into a halfback in a move that would see the No. 3 draft pick follow in the footsteps of reigning Rising Star winner Nick Daicos.

Sheezel, who was lauded as a fast learner after Saturdayā€™s practice match loss to Western Bulldogs, showed shades of Hawthorn champion Luke Breust when he snapped a beautiful goal off one step in the first quarter at Ikon Park.

But the kid with enormous footy IQ and creativity was sent behind the ball in the final quarter ā€“ and won 10 disposals, four handball receives, two rebounds and one inside 50 to cause a round 1 rethink in Clarksonā€™s box.

ā€œItā€™s a tough one. Early days I was really keen that he should play as a forward,ā€ forwards coach Leigh Adams said.

ā€œBut seeing him in that last quarter today he gave us something probably a little bit different that we didnā€™t have in our back six for the first three quarters.

ā€œHis ability to get in the right position for handball receives and then link up and get multiple possessions and put the ball inside 50m for us.

Itā€™s going to be an interesting one. I liken it a little bit to Nick Daicos last year, where he came in as a midfielder and they decided to sit him behind the ball to start with and ease him into the game a little bit more.

ā€œHe looked pretty good there. Itā€™ll be a call for ā€˜Clarkoā€™ to make, but probably after that last quarter itā€™s put a little bit more pressure on him to go back.ā€
Adams said he loved how Sheezel, 18, absorbed information.

ā€œIf thereā€™s an area of his game he needs to work on then you have the conversation with him and within the next week itā€™s fixed,ā€ he said.

ā€œHe just wants to get better, he wants to be a really good player and what heā€™s got is some real X-Factor.ā€

Geezā€¦. That makes him so tempting

A lot of mouths to feed in the Kangas HB lineā€¦.! LMac, Ziebell and Hall (when fit) to startā€¦. not sure heā€™ll spend enough time there to be worthwhile

Itā€™s not - because he was talking about cash generation on the bench so the rookie score isnā€™t contributing to the weekly score
It doesn't change that if they're the best cash generators they're also the best scorers, if you assumed that all other players on your team scored to their price, the player generating more cash would produce more on field points also as they're outperforming their starting point the most.

It's what I always find is a major flaw when people are picking a Hopper type, they argue points on field over a rookie but always forget the cash difference. Hopper at 95 for example has the same on field value as Chesser scoring 57, all else being equal. The value of a Hopper is you'd hope that 95 is a lot more reliable, whilst a rookie at 57 you will be playing roulette with and just as likely to miss the good games as the bad games!

Cracking work as always, entertainment plus incredible insights. Interesting to see rankings too.

Very keen to have a D2 in my team which means a little sacrificing on 1-2 pricey rookies.

Donā€™t have Mclean due to two weeks of deep forward role it seems and whilst Phillipou has been in my side most preseason, feels I need to cut him to Essendonā€™s Davey to afford Doc (for Mckenna) in back line and Esava R3.

Partly driven by adding Flanders and Sheezel who I think either have better roles (may not just be HFF). Phillipou JS good, think scoring vs price and bit short of making my team now. Chesser in side too, agree, may be slow burn yet has good upside.

Have spent up on rookies it feels, although 6 rookies on bench at 123k plus Constable on field.

Cash gen is a priority but cannot run too many roomies in defence if they are scoring on field at 40-60 risk.
You pay up when fielding more rookies, job security becomes far more important than pure cash generation when starting a lot of rookies in one position. You significantly shorten the field of replacement options the more you start with, which makes fixing problems much harder, so you just need that added safety.

I don't see the back rookies as weaker at all right now, fwiw, I'd say that Cole, Constable, McKenna, Ginbey, Bowes, Crozier and a couple of others will score as well or better than the M8/F6 types.

Oddly the mid rookies look the weakest line to me, forwards have depth, I expect I'll pick the wrong two from the field of 15 and be using two trades there but I have no worries there, if the premiums weren't so outstanding there this year I dare say I'd be playing 4 there as well!

Right now I've got 2 DPP guys on my MID bench, such is the strength of the other two spots. I'm also spending more than I think I've ever done on the bench at basically 150k, part of that is starting Constable over Cole down back but it's still a lot and will almost certainly go up when I ditch Madden which is inevitable, this is the longest a non-forced donut has ever made it in my preseason teams

It's really an added bonus, you pick him as a HF with a decent role and you hope they use HB to inflate him. If he lands there it's probably at the expense of Perez (who goes out for Corr anyway imo) or Goater. It's actually good they've got a an obvious out for him. I'm not sure what happens with Hall, he's the kind of player that Clarko would have issues with and there's been no sign he's playing so far, Hall is your textbook way better at SC than football guy.

Will be interesting to see, positive is there will be a fair bit of ball down there, especially if they keep kicking it to the other team every time they go forward!

I think Sheezel is among the best rookies without the back time, that would elevate him to pretty much the best if he got it. Especially given that Corr and McDonald will take the hard defensive matchups.

Ratuglea is one I just canā€™t make a call on. Donā€™t really rate him with scoring or JS at his price but as a R/F is important for those one week outs. Then is he R3 or F7 with donut R3.

Iā€™m not a fan of the starting donut as one normally come fast enough but a captain loophole can make lots of points early.

You can do some interesting things with the 150k saved from going Ziebell to Sheezel.
Iā€™m really exited by him as a prospect not only for SC but as a Nth fan.
I was iffy on Ziebell with a lot of uncertainty on his role (reasons for that are posted in other threads).

Decisions decisionsā€¦

Yes this is what makes this game fun.

You would think they could both make the same cash but Ziebell better points on field. But that extra 150k turns a $500k dodgy defender into a Doch/Stewart/Dawson type.

Davey, A Jones or Caminiti?
Or other cheapie.
Already considering Rat at R3 and don't want to sit $200k on the forward bench.

Assume youā€™ve already got Fergus Greene. Suitable emoji youā€™ve gone with the other 3. Could have a donut there or very slow cash climb.
I think finding the extra $ to get up to a McLean, Rat, Sheezel type is worth it for cash gen

I think Davey is interesting, appreciate many calling out JS or scoring. Essendon fans seem to like him. 79% TOG in preseason game is reasonable, given his endurance rating is 2/4. His speed helps pressure and tackle game (3), his DE 46% was low.

Jones interesting, 2nd year player. Need to do more work on him. Not sure Caminiti gets a game.

Davey the best of that group.

Jones JS is terrible, they have Weightman straight into his spot as soon as he's fit, was a late out on the weekend but isn't a certainty for round 1. Role also not good.

Davey could be a sub target and could get pushed out of the side but he's looked good in preseason and role is better at least, like him the most of this group by a fair bit.

Caminiti role isn't good and may not play round 1, depends if they want a bigger option or happy to use Membrey, if he's picked alongside Membrey then that's a better sign he has until King is back as a chance at least.

Make him better value for his price. Currently not in my team.

One to watch over the first to rounds.?

I usually hate having anyone over 124K on my bench because Iā€™d rather spend the money on field but with how the forward rookies are turning out this year I think Iā€™m going to have Sheezel and McLean on field and Phillipou and (reluctantly) Greene on the bench with Davey at M9 to provide DPP swing if required.

Just donā€™t want too many rookies being slow burns or being dropped after a round or twoā€¦

Iā€™m not even sure McLean will be a viable rookie priced player. Iā€™m not as sold on his JS as most, thereā€™s a couple to come back and tbh if I was a dogs suppporter Iā€™d be playing Arthur Jones and Oscar Baker in front of him.

This has me interested, I have MacKenzie atm who Iā€™m not completely sold on his role as an inside mid and this could be an alternative with some upside
