Daicos and Ridley picks are going to be really interesting to watch vs the mid and lower price defenders and alternatives others go with.

Number of high profile top 10 players on Ridley and no Daicos, which makes sense. Does Mason Redman continue to steal his points.

Can understand though if running 11-12 premium team, the 500k price tag allows you to get one of a Flanders or Sheezel over a potn poor quality rookie.

I don't think they really matter tbh, with 36 trades you can put whoever you want in each position and just sideways them to the performing player around that price bracket. Those who do well early will no doubt be fluid and loose with trading early.

I see this "we have 36 trades now" mentioned a bit, but we do have an extra AFL round this year. I do agree that 36 trades will allow us to take a gamble, or 2, but we should not rely on it too heavily.

Trades will be much more valuable this year. Rookies don't look great and not many fallen premiums around.
That gets said every year I've played this game. Last year was the first year ever I reckon I had a trade last round with a full team and extra premium on the bench - had no idea what to do with it, and that was with the ruck merry-go-round and Cripps in and out and in debacle. The winner last year was out of trades with a bucket of rounds to play. Yeah they're important but to keep saying every year they're more important than the previous, please. Even with an extra round I think you need to be aggressive with them.

I agree we still need to be very aggressive, but last year had so many obvious free hits that aren't there this year. Coniglio, Sicily, Cripps, Hewett in D, Brodie in F. I feel like 2023, coaches will need a lot of 3 down 1 ups to get a premo.

Potential is there to only start one defender premium as well and load up on people like Yeo/Bowes/Jones/Crozier etc.

The thought didn't happen in the bedroom, it was while I was sitting at my computer

Not sure whether that makes it more or less gross

I think either are fine alternatives to a $600k guy if that $100k helps elsewhere

Currently sitting with Stewart, Dawson, Yeo, Jones, Ginbey, Mckenna

Mckenna the only real ? for me there. Wilmot and Weddle on bench. May go to Constable if he’s named and Mckenna isn’t.

From what I’ve read don’t expect Weddle unless there’s news I’ve missed

At this time last year, only Cogs was an obvious free hit. All the others listed had some question marks or significantly outperformed expectations. There's always a few that surprise each year.

I would say all of then were very obvious and quite popular picks amongst serious coaches. Brodie was the only one who significantly outperformed, based in their individual histories. Even Hewett had shown good scoring when given a chance as a mid at the Swans and we all knew from training he was playing an inside mid role with the blues during preseason.

Guess I need to take this more seriously because I did not pick all of them... :cautious:

Hewett was obvious value for sure, but I doubt anyone had 110 in their expectations. I recall plenty of discussion about whether he would score enough to be a top 6 defender playing in the Blues stacked midfield.

Yeo and Hopper look to be the obvious cheap picks this year. But I'm sure there will be more that we look back on and realise that they were obvious.

Yeah, Yeo could quite easily end up a D keeper. Last year just felt easy to pick our starters. I'm feeling more challenged this year putting together a squad I'm happy with overall. Feels like I have to have a weak F6 or compromise somewhere else to fit in a Flanders/Bruhn type F6.
I think it's great though for the comp overall. I reckon there'll be a lot of trades burnt early on the mid price merry go round.
