So what you are saying is, the players no longer eat 6 Dim Sims, and have a smoke at half-time, like Mick Nolan did?!
There’s a legendary story Tim Watson (still16 yo) tells of getting a lift to the game with Paul Vanderhaar. Vanders had been on the sauce the night before. On the way stop off for a Burger or two, and in the meantime Vanders kept clocking the pinball machine, so just kept playing. As time kept running out Tim was ****ting himself. They only just made it to the ground in time to get into their kit and run out. Vanders was bog.

I used to work with a guy that played SANFL in the 80’s for South Adelaide when the pre season cup was the Escort Cup, he said the Escort rep would be in the rooms after the game handing out cartons of cigarettes. Definitely a different era!

I can remember in the early eighties when I worked in television going into the rooms after the games and as you said they all had cans of VB and a cigarette in their hands
It blew my mind as a 15 yo playing my first game of Seniors in a country league to see all the darts come out at halftime. I sort of accepted it playing Seconds, but geez it was strange and reflects how naive I was.

FN: I was smoking darts very soon after. Not during footy games though.
