As a Carlton supporter, with no Tom Mitchell on trade table I do not feel like there is much to get excited at for my club. Looks like re-build time has to be the priority. Trading Lucas, Robinson and Garlett for some draft picks seems about all I can expect. Feel like my club is completely off the rails with direction of coaching. Have little confidence in Malthouse. He knows what he wants to do, I'm sure of that. But whether it actually works I have little reason to be confident. Apart from him turning Sam Rowe into a key defender I struggle to find much positives of his own impact. Probably Casboult the other guy he has had a positive impact on as far as developing but Casboult still has a long way to go with his kicking. Right now we only seem to have Henderson as a key forward that can kick goals. But he is very good player. Not an out and out star key forward. Menzel and Buckley hopefully keep developing. Cripps over a broken leg should get a regular gig next season so will be interesting to see if he can become our prime inside mid for the next decade. Kruezer needs to play 18 plus games and become a full fledged star. Otherwise we are going nowhere at all except middle of ladder at best.
The only thing that gives me any hope is there is no super sides in league at moment so if you improve in leaps and bounds it is not impossible to get to the top of the league mountain. Most of the better sides now only have 3 or 4 genuine stars. If you can find 2 or 3 from within that develop all of a sudden you can get well above middle of ladder. There is not a lot of difference from top to bottom any more. The difference in general is the game plans. The teams at top are very clear on their game plans and players tend to stick to them majority of times.
I still expect Gold Coast, GWS and Sydney to be regular finalist in next 5 years and have best chance of flag success.
They seem to have best chance of having more stars to develop from within.
Yeah, I don't think that trading out those 3 as a bad thing though. Add Everitt to that list of players too, improved since Sydney.

As for the direction of the club, I'd be worried too considering Trigg's reputation at Adelaide.

Think your lists premiership window ended with Ratten. Gibbs/Murphy/Kreuzer aren't going to develop into the elite league stars needed, and there's little depth.

The one at Geelong been a friggin gem at it for some time. My club coaching staff, fitness people and list management seems well off the pace.
Stephen Wells, best in the business, always tends to reach in the drafts yet it's amazing how many time Geelong can pull it off. Graham Wright (Hawks), Derek Hine (Collingwood) the other two considered best in the business. Syndey probably deserve a mention too considering their knack at recycling players.

Kyle Martin of the pies to play for Noble Park! Ball magnet was hardly given a chance. Is there something we don't know? You look at Anthony Miles at Richmond, Sam Mitchell in his early days.

I don't think he enjoyed the rigours of professional football. You know, the training, recovery, rehab, pre-seasons etc. Would explain why he's going back to local footy rather than another AFL club or even back to the VFL. A real waste of talent, I'm really disappointed Collingwood didn't give him more opportunities. Or even one opportunity to play in his natural position, the midfield.

I read that he won his third consecutive VFL B&F recently? Could it be big fish in a little pond something something?

On a rookie contract having to do all the things outlined by Erich, OR end up getting payed slightly less as a country footballer thanks to match bonuses, get tons of perks, less training and pressure as a clear top player?

Probably says more about the rookie list than Martin really.

Mind you I'd be more worried about the dressing room in Collingwood at the moment than the much publicised supposed "rift" at Footscray.

I'm not sure how they go these days, but for those that don't know, Noble Park were/are just about the richest, most powerful Club outside of the VFL. Back in the days of the VFA in the 1980's Noble Park in one off season nearly managed to "recruit" all the the talent from the Springvale VFA side. They managed this by simply having more money than Springvale, even though Noble Park were playing in a suburban League, and Springvale were playing in what is now the equivalent of the VFL! They have produced many AFL/VFL footballers over the years. Some through their strong junior program, and many through there ability to "recruit" promising youngsters from surrounding Clubs. These days it is slightly different with most promising young players now going through the various systems and academy's.

Sewell retired!

Sewell calls it a day after Hawks decline to offer new contract

DUAL premiership player Brad Sewell has announced his retirement at Hawthorn's best and fairest count on Saturday night after being told he would not be offered a contract for 2015.

The 200-game veteran will hang up the boots after the Hawks asked him to make way for the club's young midfielders next season.

Sewell received a standing ovation as he took to the stage and delivered an emotional farewell to the 1300-strong crowd at Crown Palladium.

"As one door closes, another one opens, and what exactly that means for me I'm unsure of just yet," Sewell said.

"I will take the time to work that out and I sincerely look forward to my next journey, safe in the knowledge that I have had the best possible grounding any man could ask for.

"I can't actually articulate how thankful I am to all of you for your support.

"The memories and feelings you have left me with I shall one day share with my grandchildren with the utmost delight and reverence."

The 30-year-old, who was agonisingly overlooked for the Hawks' Grand Final triumph over the Sydney Swans, hailed the club's turnaround under coach Alastair Clarkson.

Sewell joined the Hawks through the rookie draft in 2003 and played his entire career under the now three-time premiership coach as the Hawks climbed off their knees to become arguably the greatest team of the past decade.

"Obviously this year didn't finish as well as I would have personally liked," Sewell said.

"This past week has almost been an out-of-body experience, almost surreal to some extent.

"Yet, no matter how difficult it was to watch unfold … it was impossible not to enjoy that win.

"The manner in which we operated that day was unlike anything we've seen – and I say operated because it was surgical.

"And, in an odd way, it was with a rising sense of pride that I watched the game.

"The development of our players and our systems over the past five years manifested itself for all to see on that day."

Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge lavished praise on one of his most loyal lieutenants who he labelled a "big-game player" and one of the best stoppage players in the AFL.

President Andrew Newbold said it had been a difficult decision to part with a club favourite.

"He's played a fantastic role for our footy club both on and off the field," Newbold told Channel Nine earlier on Saturday night.

"The way he prepares is just outstanding and he's a shining light for all other players."

Sewell battled a series of hamstring injuries through 2014, but notched his 200th game in the club's qualifying final against Geelong.

However, he lost his place in the team when half-back Matt Suckling returned for the preliminary final against Port Adelaide.

Jeez, could they get any stronger??

It's official: Frawley joins the Hawks

JAMES Frawley's long exit from Melbourne is complete after the key defender joined Hawthorn as a free agent on Monday.

Frawley, who confirmed he was leaving the Demons last Wednesday, was free to join the club of his choice as an unrestricted free agent with the Hawks lodging paperwork on day one of the free agency window.

It is a major coup for the Hawks, who lost star forward Lance Franklin as a restricted free agent at the end of last season.

The 26-year-old will further bolster the reigning premier's defensive stocks and shapes as a long-term replacement for Norm Smith medallist Brian Lake, who signed a new one-year deal on Thursday.

Frawley was linked to Geelong and Fremantle before nominating Hawthorn as his preferred destination.

The Cats will instead deal with Melbourne to sign key forward Mitch Clark.

Frawley clearly not a supercoacher.
Hawks have just gone back to back. History suggests 3 in a row is rare, their best players are well past the half way mark of their careers. They are more likely to slide in the next few years rather than get better.
I'm not trying to bag Hawthorn, just pointing out the realities of the system.
Melbourne might get a premiership before Hawthorn in the coming years!

So now await to see what compensatory pick Dees get for losing Frawley. Hopefully something good compared to what he is truly worth otherwise this free agency thing sucks.

Now THAT is something I would like to see :) Not very confident though.

Yep this - Free agency hasn't really worked out very well for the Dee's (or a number of other lowly teams also) :(

Just need Danger ;)
Just saw this.

Just in:

Hawthorn are in talks with Adelaide for Patrick Dangerfield!
Adelaide are keen on securing Ryan Schoemakers plus a ruckmen, so Luke Lowden plus Hawthorns first round pick (19) to sweeten the deal may be enough.

Talks with Collingwood is falling away because collingwood aren't coming to the party with a player they need.

The crows are desperate to secure a Ruckmen to support Jacobs. Jenkins did provide relief over the year in the ruck, but he was much more dangerous in the forward 50 so they'll look to keep him more closer to goal instead of up the ground.

Yeah, well I want to see Dees get something really decent for Frawley to see it work to a lower teams advantage for once.
If they do get pick 3 or something then it will feel like the strange system has some benefit at times for a club losing a player.
I just finding it harder to get uses to the fact the you do not get compensated based on players actual ability. You get it in line with age and contract.
I rate Waite a better player than Frawley or Higgins but we get nothing. I know that is because of his age so just have to accept it but I know for this next season we now lose the ability to have Waite, Henderson and Casboult up forward half and no compensation for losing such a player. Towards end of season I would say after Roughy and Franklin , Waite the next most likely key forward capable of turning a game. We lose him and get nothing. I know Frawley is not as good a player but will feel better if Dees get a really good pick for Frawley as then I will at least see over time the system can work in your favour and not just against. Hopefully one day we lose a player and get compensated better than he is worth. If Dees get a really good pick for losing Frawley I will see it is possible. That will make it easier to stomach losing Waite and getting nothing by seeing Frawley being over compensated to Dees.
Hawks lost Franklin last year and did not get what he is worth. It is all a bit strange to get used to but hopefully what you lose on one player over the years you gain somewhere else where system works in your favour and not against. Hoping the test case is to see it work in favour of Dees with Frawley going.

News coming through via 3AW is that Levi Greenwood has requested a trade to Collingwood. Greenwood tied for second in North's B&F.

Tim Membrey requests a trade to St Kilda. Ironic that 2 years ago, Sydney gave St Kilda Trent Dennis-Lane for pick 46.
Sydney then use pick 46 to draft Tim Membrey.

I hope you are right OZ, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I thought the Dee's were a chance to get the requested priority pick, but no go. I think the AFL tends to err on the side of not being generous, but who knows, we might get reasonable compensation for Frawley to help soften the blow of no compo pick

"We are disappointed with the outcome and annoyed with the process, the process part in particular. We always felt like Waite would be worth a third-round pick, and you factor that into your whole thinking when you're assessing his visibility to be a free agent."
- Carlton CEO Steven Trigg
