Quick Thoughts...
General - Interesting game, Swans were putrid the first few minutes then the better team for 95% of the remaining game. Very low hitout numbers, especially given the wet weather in the 4th. The rucks were super influential, basically Hickey had a woeful first 10 minutes (luckily he did it in a non-SC way) and then another bad patch when the Lions came storming back but was otherwise really good. Ruckwork was bad by both which meant they could get a fair few clearances themselves.
Lions - Effort wasn't there by just about anyone. To be honest they looked like a team with a bunch of guys who had limited preseasons which is appropriate given that they did. Reality is that their pressure was super low which allowed the Swans to basically do what they wanted.
Zorko - Scraped a good score out of a bad game, role as advertised, high HF with some midfield bursts.
Rich - Role as advertised, he didn't feel as bad as his ratio, probably and 85 type SC on feel. Still think he can be a good one.
Lyons - Same old, role not as pure midfield as in the past as a few others go through more.
Clug - Really down game for him, just couldn't get among it. Like most of the Lions mids.
OMc - Definitely didn't feel like a 100 game, will be one of those where all his hitouts basically found teammates or something as didn't really do anything noteworthy.
Neale - Just really lazy game. Textbook example of a guy with no preseason just not being able to get to contests and impact them as often. Was alright in the stoppages but was, again, lacking his burst and first step explosiveness which meant a lot of under pressure disposal which led to turnovers. Swans let him do what he wanted and he just couldn't impact the contest and he just looks a touch underdone.
Berry - Ditto to Neale basically, moving better and fitter but not as involved in the contest and playing very outside, probably a result of the shoulder issue. They need him inside more.
Bailey - Had a great first quarter and was looking great, then a couple of other moments but I honestly have no idea where he was playing when it wasn't in the guts as he just couldn't get near it. To be fair the Swans moved the ball so quickly he wouldn't have a chance.
Daniher - Looked great early but when all supply went away and the Lions started butchering everything he never really had a chance. Report should be a fine, less in it than Astbury's incident. Was solid. Rain in the 4th didn't help.
Sharp - Did some nice things, actually scored better than I thought. Was far from their worst in a game that didn't suit him.
Fullarton - Solid first quarter, barely saw him after that. Tough role.
Swans - Surprisingly good and led by the kids with Mills the most senior of the guys who starred in the game. It's amazing what adding a half dozen guys who can kick into the mix can do for a side, all of a sudden you move the ball and actually look like scoring.
Mills - FOMO, at least I got him in both the DT formats and at least the guys I took instead basically averaged 105 or so but I talked myself out of it. Was clearly the best player and midfielder on the field and you can already see how much better Sydney will be for having him in there. Rested forward and kicked one of the goals while doing it, the other was a pure midfield running, his class by hand and foot and extra time just stands out. Looked every bit the 115 type of midfielder I expected and he's not in my team
Gulden - Well I said he was classy but even I didn't think he had this level of scoring in him, as he rides my bench, wont be a thrashing every week and his role is still not a great fantasy role but he's so good. He's like a blend of Merrett and Cyril, as odd as that combination probably seems, but just the class by foot but the creativity and pressure work also. Somehow he's the 3rd best of our kids which is pretty damn awesome but he could end up the best if he keeps showing that level of football smarts. Wont do this every week and kind of wasted it in the first week but will take it!
Parker - Garbage time alert. Kicked the two late goals when it was dead and was pretty mediocre the rest of the game. Clearly the #2 midfielder behind Mills now which is good, Parker is the ideal 2nd or 3rd mid type doing the hard stuff to spring classier players.
Hickey - It's hard to understate how bad his first 10 or so minutes were and he was just lucky that all his errors were so bad they don't even count as clangers
because he just ran straight past the ball... and then he realised he could just grab it out of the ruck and kick it long and CD love that **** so his score went ballistic... to be fair when he was on top in the ruck is when the Swans did all our scoring so his SC is actually a fair representation of that. He's not facing OMc every week though.
Heeney - Played as a full forward into regulation half forward. Didn't notice him midfield at all and didn't notice him above the halfway mark more than a couple of times all game. Will need to score like this in the wins because the role is terrible.
Lloyd - What a remarkable SC score he put up, even his DT score was generous for the game he played. Was responsible for almost half Brisbane's goals, or so it felt, with his defensive work (admittedly not punished in SC) and had a couple of the worst kicks of the game (he managed to score SC points on an uncontested out on the full which was impressive). If you've got him you know he probably just had his worst game and still was touched on proverbial by the scorers. Same old Lloyd, particular highlight of "politely" telling Dawson to "go away" for thinking he could take a kick-in off him. This was a pretty clear example of how much better Sydney are the less he's involved. Swans are not going to dominate games like this generally so I wouldn't worry anyone who nabbed him.
Blakey - Did some nice things, ratio seemed harsh but basically never recovered from a sluggish start with a few errors and got the junk time treatment when he came good.
McDonald - From everything I've seen, he should have been the #1 pick and if not #1, definitely #2 and #3. Teams are going to regret that one. He was so good in the first that Andrews went to him from that point in the game and he still had impact on the contest. His reading of the play and presenting on leads is already way above average and his kicking is elite. Very excited.
Dawson - Tough game, both sides moved it very quickly with almost no midfield pressure which meant basically only one on ones for forwards so the intercept guys got no work. What he did, he did well. Down back all game.
Warner - Really solid game. Mostly wing/hf, which is a good role. Did more than enough to play again next week and he's going to be a really good player. In a couple of years I'd be surprised if he's not in our midfield mix and pushing premium numbers, just finds the ball and space.
Campbell - As funny as it sounds, he was probably the best of the kids... he was so good in the first that the Lions actually put work into him for the rest of the game and while he didn't really no what to do with it that should highlight how good he looked, his left foot is genuinely better than sex as a Swans fan. I don't think I've seen someone kid kick like him in my adult life. Like Lloyd and Dawson, the lack of supply was the biggest issue for him today and the attention just exacerbated that.
Go Swannies!
