Wow, certainly has the body to compete against the big forwards
They were saying earlier in the pre season he was at his optimal playing weight and they werent looking to add size to him, is in the B side but I think that aspect is being overplayed myself, its alot better for his development to match up against Hawkins or Cameron than be in the first side and be playing on a kid.

I'm liking it too as it's another person who is not considering Ward as a starting pick. There seems to be quite a few. Can't wait for him to prove a lot of doubters wrong!

I could be completely wrong and I know I am definitely biased as a Hawks supporter, but everything I have seen of him from training reports and junior form suggests he will score well and that he is worth paying slightly more for than other rookies. He's got a good tank and never gives up unlike a lot of other rookies. I think he should be given a chance to earn a regular spot in the team early on and I would be very surprised if he doesn't secure it.

Friday week against the Pies and I guess we'll all hopefully see who's looking closer to the mark, but he's one player who is a near lock in my team right now. That said, I do respect the opinions of multiple people here that are much better at SC than me who are not really considering starting him, so I'm starting to wonder what exactly I'm missing...
Good mix of inside/outside game, efficient ball user, great tank and works as hard as any bloke going around, time will tell but right now I find very few reasons not to pick him, especially in a side that will offer plenty of opportunity to the next gen.

Between Ward and MacDonald the Hawks have made a killing at the draft IMHO.

Add Butler to that list and Ned Long in the rookie draft could prove to be a steal as well.

Think we may have to downgrade expectations on Comben. The CCJ update commentary from Noble suggests he will join Larkey as 2nd big person in forward line and be swapping with Goldy. No mention of Comben in forward line discussions in last update.

Been harping on a bit about concerns with Vic Draftees, so trying to understand it a bit more. Worth noting that I'm reading these games had reduced quarter lengths like the AFL in 2020, someone correct me if I'm wrong as I only see one source.

Looking at the 2020 draft, this draft was quite terrible in teams of ready to go mids. Will Phillips had 22 disp a game (shorter games remember), Hollands 17 disp but mid/fwd, Fin Macrae 17 disp mid/fwd, had a 34 disp game in 17s.

So going by this, Will Phil is really all we're going by here. He looked off the pace for most of the year I thought, did he just struggle to adjust because bad, or was it because of all the missed footy? IDK. Fin Macrae struggled as well over 4 quarters, perhaps he wasn't good enough at the time to be a 30 disp mid in nab league, but played out of position there so who knows.

This year we have Daicos (36 disp), MacDonald (31 disp), Ward (30 disp), Hobbs (24 disp).

So in summary, we basically have a sample size of 1 basically for inside mids (Will Phil) in relation to how 30disp vic draftees go after a corona year into the AFL. Will Phil did look terrible in preseason from memory, so I think I'll reserve judgement for the Practice and AAMI game for Daicos, Ward, and MacDonald.
Phillips actually looked very decent when he played midfield, the problem was that he didn't and was never expected to with LDU, Simpkin and Cunnington clearly ahead of him for the role. His problem was that he wasn't a very good forward in a weak side that had limited inside 50 chances more than anything else. If any of this years group have similar clear roles entering the season I wont go near them either.

For what it's worth Nik Cox, Archie Perkins, Holmes, Bowey and Berry were all pretty decent from Victoria last year.

I think it's worth noting that last year was a very weak midfield draft and that's probably the bigger factor. When most of the mids end up being drafted into stronger sides there wont be chances for them.

Hard to really work out how much is covid given that and how much is just how the cookie crumbled.

I just think this year is a better draft pool in all honesty, especially for mids, lot more guys that should be good to go than last season, even from Victoria.

“There is (a chance for an early-season debut).

“He kicked a couple (of goals) today, he’s a classy little player. He’s talented, he really is, and he’s just fitted into the club.

“The first session he came and trained with the boys he just fitted in, didn’t make a mistake, he’s just a classy little goal sneak.”

JHF, Daicos, Hinge, Ward, Stephens, Chesser at the moment. Preuss, Hobbs and Erasmus could easily be in too. I guess it depends on the likes of Mead, Stephens, Macdonald, Dean etc.. and if enough lower priced guys come on over the next month but i expect 6 at the absolute lowest will be in my team.

How are people planning to navigate Rd1?
We're going to be drip fed starting teams over 5 days, so do you hold cash in reserve so that you can get guys like JHF & Ward or just grab rookies as they appear?
If they don't appear, you may have missed a chance to grab a better player earlier in the round.

I am definitely holding enough cash to get JHF/Daicos/ Ward as their scoring/ cash making potential is so much higher than the other rookie prospects along with the very real possibility that JHF gets fwd classification added & Daicos gets Defender classification added.

Are we going to be drip fed teams? I thought Thursday night teams were still going to be the norm this year.

My anticipation is we will know 95% of the rookie debuts as we normally do. Clubs have been good about the big song and dance on debutants over the past couple of years which makes it a lot easier.

Harder ones are probably guys like a Berry though if he's touch and go he's a hard no for me.

Biggest difficulty for me is actually going to be the Melb vs Dogs game and how many premiums will be locked in before we have any other teams.

Dale, Daniel, Salem, May, Macrae, Oliver, Bont, Treloar, Dunkley, Gawn, Smith and Petracca are all very much in play, albeit some much rarer than others. It's conceivable that half my premiums are locked in that night.

On a massive positive, tinkering in extra Dogs and Demons sure feels a lot better than my constantly tinkering in extra Blues and Tigers... last year I tinkered in Short, Cripps and Dow at the last minute, Short wasn't terrible but the other two...

End of the day I don't think it will be a big factor. Hopefully the clubs will let us know who is debuting ahead of time and make our lives easy.

Is annoying that so many of the potential kids are on the Sunday though.
