Markov not going to the blues now must make Cowan a good rd1 chance after Williams injury
Not sure a spot actually is there if everyones fit, back 6 just about picks itself with
Newman,Weitering,McGovern
Saad,Young,Docherty

One 7th defender spot from Marchbank,Plowman,Kemp and Cowan I reckon and could really just come down to the opposition they are playing.

I was working on the presumption that they were still planning on playing Docherty in the midfield till Walsh is back and possibly beyond

Been in defence for the last few match sims so doesnt seem like its their plan as much anymore.
TOP ‘DOC’

Michael Voss might have been tempted to bin the Sam Docherty midfield experiment.

When Zac Williams went down with his torn ACL last week it would have been tempting to throw Docherty back to stiffen the defence.

But it is clear Voss wants to persist with the midfield move after Docherty paired up against Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps in the engine room for the entire match simulation session on Friday.

Docherty has a natural nose for the ball and linked up well as George Hewett took another impressive step in his return from a season-ending back injury.

Hewett gave Lachie O’Brien some blunt feedback for kicking to a short 50-50 contest midway through the session, underlining Hewett’s standing within the group after only one year at the club.

Paddy Dow was another who shone as he attempts to crack into the midfield mix as part of a make-or-break year.

Yep, because only club leaders and those held in sufficient esteem among the playing group should feel sufficiently empowered to criticise another player's poor onfield decision-making, particularly in a training situation. I guess everyone else should just shut the hell up

Football is a very honest accountable and blunt culture. Not everyone is a leader and steps up. A prick on the field could do it too. no one suggesting he was a prick though.

What's the go on Baker?

Was stunned to see some Footscray wag had put him in their best 22 on a wing with Treloar out injured, I would have thought he was depth at best
Has been impressing all preseason with his hard running on a wing - essentially he is the replacement for Hunter. Most do think he is real chance at being in the best 22 round 1.

My worry with Baker is that he comes in as prime sub potential...

Showed glimpses at the Dees, but drifts in and out of games. Could either be the impact player with great pace that they use as the sub to inject some life back in, or could be the starter that gets subbed out for lack of impact.
I'd need to be convinced that he doesn't end up in the sub role as that will kill all cash gen.

That said - this is an issue for almost all rookie/cheapie options this year. Really need to see these guys get away from the fringe and be locked in picks each week.

Will be interesting to see how his acquisition impacts Macrae. If he is the direct replacement for Hunter, Macrae should then be moved back into a more inside role considering Hunter was out for more than half of last season (and Macrae shifted further out onto a wing in his absence).

Was Macrae hampered last year or was crazy bevo deliberately giving him less TOG?
It's hard to think his drop-off was solely because Bevo moved him to the wing. It's just as likely he was moved to a more outside role to protect him from an issue. Who knows what that might have been. No surgery or modified pre-season that I know of.

That stat recently showed that his last quarters (later in the year) were his worst by a long way - that is not normal for him. He looked to be struggling with his running and quite often you will hear post-season that so-and-so was carrying something. You worry when there is no explanation that they are hiding a potentially on-going issue. Although as I said, his pre-season seems normal from what we've heard.
