Looking at English's first 6 weeks :-

Melbourne - Gawn & Grundy
St Kilda - Marshall. Scores of 51 last year & 68 the previous year as his last 2 v the saints
Bris - McInerney
Rich - Nankervis
Port - Lycett
Freo - Darcy and Jackson

So he plays against the 2 best ruck combos in the league in the first 6 weeks & v a team that he has scored poorly last 2 times he has played him. No Stef Martin helps for his scoring ability but it isn't an easy draw to start with for him.
I have stuck in my mind that little of English's scoring comes from his ruckwork. Instead it's his around the ground efforts, especially dropping back a kick behind the contest to intercept mark, that give him his scoring ability. If that's true, then I would thought he'd be largely matchup proof based off rucks and instead it'd be more about how the overall midfield matches up, e.g. a safer chipping disposal team or a handballing team is likely to drop his scoring more.

For those opting not to start English and instead selecting Lycett/Draper or Cameron at R2 to get a look at a second ruck spot over the first 6-10 rounds, will English come into consideration as an upgrade target or will he not be considered at all this season?
I'd absolutely consider him, given Cameron's ability to get kicked forward.

There's a couple of podcasts that cover this pretty well IMO and it's around the line of if you think a player is too much of an injury risk to start, than he's too much of an injury risk for you all season. Now that's different from being underdone due a limited preseason or you don't believe the match-ups are right early in the season but basically if English plays a couple of preseason games and is selected round 1 and you won't take him based on being too much of an injury risk, then that carries forward for the whole season.

I understand the thinking, is it black and white - well nothing is really in SC.
A minor nitpick is that there would be a tipping point.

Preuss is an obvious example - I wouldn't trust him to play a whole season. However if he has a fantastic set of matchups at the end of the year, I'm entirely fine to bet on him lasting half a dozen games. However that's clearly not the same as targeting him (or equivalent) as a normal premium because you want them in your team as soon as possible, so you start gambling on him not missing games across 10-13 games which is a lot more germane to your point.

Sure, but towards the end of the year I guess you have more of an idea in terms of yr position, trades left and team strength and coverage but agree.

TBH, I think I'll find 29 players I'm happy with on all lines and just take whoever I can afford with the cash left over. Seems as good as a strategy as any at this stage.
I tried this and ended up with Brynn Teakle at R2 o_O

And some part of me still thought... there's a world where that might work. Preseason games now please!

2 weeks ago I slotted Oscar McInerney into my team and my ruck stress has gone :).

McInerney will be 29 this year, he is durable, will have Neale and Dunkley (and Ashcroft?) to tap the ball to. He will also be the solo ruckman, as I read that Fagan lost faith in Fort at the end of last season. I will only spend $487,000 on him, which will let me upgrade a mid-pricer, on another line, to a Gun that will get the extra SC points.

I will be more relaxed and enjoying the Brisbane games each week, not worrying if he will get an injury.
Will he be a Keeper or a Stepping Stone? Not a worry now, later in the season will tell what to do.
My drinking will not be ruck stress related. :D

DC is not R1 at the Pies atm.

Fully expect Mason to start as R1

As crazy as it seems, it's happening
I can’t stand cox. Im not sure if its the one good game he ever had( against us in the prelim) or the arrogance he has for a very average player. It could just be the Collingwood cheer squad chanting USA with the American flag.
Probably just going with Grundy at R2 seems bang for his buck at his price. 105 ave is on the cards.

Agreed. In a contested field I think Cox might comfortably be my most disliked player. Cannot stand him

That night against the Tigers is some of the most entertaining footy I've seen.
Big Coxzilla absolutely tearing the Tigers to shreads after I'd told all my mates how useless he was all season and gave it to them at every opportunity is something I will never live down, hate him solely for that reason.

Footy at its best

Almost got in a fight the night Cox destroyed the Tigers - the locals at the pub where I was watching the game were getting very grumpy that the Tigers were losing and started looking for things/people to punch. I left before halftime...
