Looks like my 2201 was a decent score. Just goes to show, the less you know, the better you go. LOL

Mackenzie's unwanted cameo seems to have brought his time to an end in my team.
Ginbey also has made himself expendable.
Will probably take those those two out for Chayce Jones and bring back Ratugolea.

Ginbey out means one less to worry about in the troublesome Rd 15 bye.
Ratugolea seems to be vastly improving every week.
He makes an excellent backup in case one of my two premium rucks has to miss a week.
With GEE having a bye in Rd 13, he also won't be missed as I have lots of cover that week.

Thoughts?

Others may know Jones and Esava’s upside cases better, but both seem like lower quality prospects than the two outs (albeit I understand the breakeven argument). I suspect Roberts and Johnson will be popular alternative ins this round.

The other thing I would mention is that you probably want all of those guys to be out of your side by R13 anyway, so I don’t think the byes matter too much for rookies at this point. Definitely still relevant for premiums though.

Yeah, I doubt Chayse will be around by then.

Esava might though, if he keeps up decent scores around 70. Good ruck backup and fill in during the byes to save a transfer.
I have English and Marshall, so between the 3, I can field 2 in any bye round (if they don't get crocked).

So what's the usual plan for the byes? Play musical chairs by rotating premiums with transfers and maybe some boosts?

Looking at Roberts and Johnson, they don't seem that enticing in DT. More for SC.
But I guess that depends on current team structure and where people have fires to put out.

I am fairly sure that bye scoring is based on best 18 players from your 22, so there would be no requirement to have two rucks playing (albeit extra numbers can be handy, and there’s no point having 11 M only players playing - ie having a positional spread is much more useful).

Historically the plan (using SC prices - but the DT concept is the same) was to try to turn two mature rookies worth around 300+k each into a new decent rookie at just over 100k, and a premo at 500+k. If you can do that every week for a while, you improve your on field side by perhaps 30 points per week for several weeks running, and that can build a lot of extra points.

It can be easier said than done though, and if the rookies don’t oblige (either by producing 300+k prices, or in a second wave of them appearing exactly when you want to downgrade to them), that can make it a lot harder, and you kind of have to delay the process by a week until enough cash is generated (eg 2-3 downgrades for 1 upgrade). Two 250k rookies doesn’t really buy you much of note.

Boosts help to alleviate that, because you can do 2 down, 1 up in a single week and you don’t lose time. Obviously there’s a limited number of them though, so I’d probably look to use them when you need to to ensure you can execute a proper upgrade (ie where you would otherwise have to delay, or choose a lower quality upgrade target).

I wouldn’t suggest rotating premiums from now on, unless you’re confident you don’t need those trades to upgrade your team. There might be scope for 2-3 based on the extra 6 trades we have, but they’re kind of luxury trades if you’re rotating premiums. Fortunately most upgrading should be done by the byes, so you should have clearer visibility on how much of a trade buffer you have by the time you can potentially use it 🙂

Cheers for the detailed response Darkie.

With rotating the premiums, I meant it more in the bye rounds.
So if my primo has a bye, I could bench them to save a transfer. But if I can only field 17, then I can trade them out to a primo that has a game.
Then the following week, I can trade back the primo I traded out (who should now play every game), for the next primo who now has a bye.

At a quick glance, it looks like Rd12 & 13 will be easy to navigate, as 4 then 2 teams have a bye. Bench should cover the MIAs.
But then Rd 14 & 15 has 6 teams each week that have a bye, and that seems to be where the challenge will be.
I doubt I will have enough starters, let alone quality players to get out 18 in those two weeks.

But I'm trying to plan now, so if I have two equally good options, I will likely favour the player that plays in the bye weeks I'll struggle to field 18.

That makes sense.

There will be others who are much better at bye planning than I am, but the main thing I’d mention is that you probably don’t want to be trading the same player out and then in. It’s essentially two trades for call it 110 or less.

A popular strategy is to slingshot a player who is underperforming … eg let’s say you had
Docherty (uninjured) who you weren’t enamored with, but who wasn’t bad enough to justify trading in normal circumstances. If his bye was looming, you could trade him out to a player who had already had his bye (let’s say Stewart), and get an extra premium score, and maybe even a semi upgrade, at the cost of a single trade. It can be hard to plan for - I see it more as a backup option for an underwhelming premo who happens to have his bye earlier than some others. It can work well in the right circumstances though.

Worth flagging that the cost of a premo donut is probably 110 at the most - which many people would say is less than the value of a trade. Copping a donut during the bye can be annoying, and good planning can avoid that downside and/or help you get a leg up, but there’s a limit to how much you want to give up (in trades, or in picking suboptimal premos with more favourable byes) in order to get that benefit. Bye balance is a great tiebreaker for your premo X vs Ys, but every year there are people who probably forgo more than it’s worth to manage around them.

Many thanks Darkie. I like this slingshot theory.
Done a spreadsheet of all my player's bye week, and I need to dump Rd 15 bye players and get more Rd 12 & 13 bye players.
Seems Touk, Stewart, Sinclair have now picked themselves for my next premo trades.

Nice one. If you can broadly target a mix that allows you to slingshot, that’s beneficial. It is still possible to over-adjust for the byes, and if you told me you were looking at Anderson, Danger and B Crouch I’d say that might be going too far, but all the names you mentioned seem like top liners, so that works well assuming their prices are right.

Has anyone spotted a discounted premium that they like the look of?

There are a few that look decent, but maybe not overwhelming, to me, eg:

Stewart
Sicily
Dylan Moore
T Green (suspended)
Z Merrett (suspended)
Maybe Butters
D Rioli
Lloyd
Neale (not quite a top line option in DT?)
Touk (maybe best of the bunch?)

I have just under 600k on cash to make an upgrade, so I’m thinking I should deploy that. Chandler may be the one to make way, which gives me up to around 1m, but I would like either an absolute top liner, or a quality premium with at least some discount reflected.

Thanks mate. I reckon I’d maybe go Green if he wasn’t suspended. Rioli also looks interesting, although Short returning this week means he may be best as a slight wait and see. Agree that both look appealing though!

At this stage I’m looking at Chandler to Touk. Touk has been a 110+ guy the last couple of years, and isn’t that cheap but isn’t dear either, so it seems a fairly low downside pick (barring injury).

So how much in total will you have to play with? Who are you trading out plus 600k.
