Fremantle had a super hard preseason, one of the players who has played elsewhere described it to someone I know as "brutal", much tougher than playing at this other AFL club he had played at. In my opinion, Serong's big advantage in the first part of the season was he was just fitter than his competition due to this preseason. I think this is also one of the reasons for the rise of Clark this year and why Ryan is D1 (you can see him scrambling away to get cheapies at pace etc)

So what happens during the season is that this advantage dissipates quite a bit, Serong will come back to the pack as you can't keep up these fitness levels due to playing a game each week.

That's the only reservation I have around getting him at say $630k or whatever; if those extra $ are better spent elsewhere in getting a $550k mid or whatever given Serong's pre-bye scoring is at some level built on this very high fitness base he has/had.
Interesting info there. Would also explain the relatively low game time Serong and Young get week to week. Often found that one or the other gets mid-high 70’s TOG. Means management are making sure they don’t burn them out.

Got four in this game, all with a horrible DT to SC ratio. Haven’t seen much of the game so can’t complain but what are the odds.

Thank you, that makes sense and is good insight.

For what it’s worth if the original source was Jeremy Sharp, my understanding is that he made comments about the training being at a much higher standard, but that this may have had more to do with Gold Coast’s than Freo’s. I gather Brodie was particularly bad when he moved to Freo, for example.

Of course it may be a different source, or there may be truth in both aspects in this case.
Before Sharp’s time but recall Ablett mentioning about the inadequate facilities (lack of ice baths), etc at Gold Coast.

Ryan literally just stands on his own for 90% of the game, and switches the ball from one side to the other. I wonder if teams just don't care cause it has no influence on the game most of the time..
Yeah, it makes a mockery of the SC scoring. I have Ryan and as soon as you recognise one of these players the coaches don’t rate jump on. Treloar is another will never be tagged.

Nah, not Sharp. A lad from where I live is playing with Freo and my nephew is mates with him/has played footy with him. Rather stupidly I was told this in the preseason but didn't roll with Serong in my starting team as I figured Darcy being out would effect him too much.

In retrospect when you see how certain players in that team have elevated themselves this season it makes sense.

Sharp though apparently the one guy who would look relatively fresh at the end of these preseason training sessions they had this year.
