I think the flex should be a cash cow slot for at least the first half of the season. If you're in a situation where a great cash cow comes out in a line where you can't justify trading anyone out, you can slot them into the flex slot (granted, if you're unlucky enough to have all players and the flex already players from that same line then you're out of luck).

The other question is when to lock in your flex each week. Do you aim to put in your early game VC to lock in a player or do you wait until later in the round to keep trading flexibility at the risk of outs with no cover?

Agree the flex allows another cash cow slot into our 23, however I think in the line that you’re accommodating that extra cash cow is where you’ll want to move a premium into the on field flex position. The reason being the cash cow (assuming a rookie) is the most likely to suddenly miss a game. So let’s say you have an extra cash cow mid, you push a premium mid to flex.
You might not even need to have the Premium on the line you get the extra cash cow. At this very, very early stage, I’m still leaning towards 3 premium rucks. Having the extra cash cow in the Mids though. I think DPPs become even more important to allow you to move any player into flex, with DPPs ensuring all lines have valid players.

Another thought on having a playing ruck in the flex spot is that it probably does away with the floating donut Ruck/Fwd that we often carry all the way thru the season. That wasted spot can be used to pick a playing rookie elsewhere

Long time reader, first post.

Liking the introduction of Flex. Surely a scoring ruck like TDK is the way to go? With a DPP R/F still as bench ruck? That way if a ruck misses a game (including byes) you can swing the Flex ruck to cover, have the non-playing ruck at R3, swing DPP R/F to Fwd bench and then have a Fwd at flex? You’ll always want to have 23 on field players? And whoever you have at Flex needs to be the player least likely to miss out ie not a rookie, as we have no cover at flex.

Hoping the Team picker opens tomorrow so we can test out some theories.
Congrats on your first post!!

I think this makes sense. In the scenario where a ruck is out for 1-2 weeks and you have a decent forward rookie, it could be handy having that 23rd warm body.

The counter argument is that it reduces flexibility for trading, because if, for example, you have a forward in your flex spot, and you want to bring in a midfielder, you can trade any forward or midfielder. Although DPPs are usually enough for this anyway.

Help me to understand this, please. What are you suggesting for R3?
:eek:You're right @Singapore Flyers - some muddled thinking on my part - guess I havent fully got my head around the flex concept yet. To get back on track - with 3 playing rucks - I guess we will be less inclined to go with a safety pairing of a donut R/F at R3 and a sub-optimal F/R DPP in our Fwd set-up

Depends for me if I think Jackson can improve on his 94 average and become a bit more consistent, I'd still be inclined to go with the perma-donut R/F at R3 even if I don't pick Jackson, for captain's looping and if during the season a decent scoring ruck gets forward status.

Fremantle ruckman Sean Darcy has received high praise for transforming his body since the end of last season with his teammates admitting they couldn’t believe they were looking at the same person after seeing photos.

Darcy had knee surgery at the end of last season as the club searched for a way to keep him on the field for longer. The Doig medallist managed only 12 games in 2024 after playing 15 matches the previous season.

Often criticised for carrying excess weight, Darcy shed several kilos last season in an attempt to stay healthy but has taken his commitment to another level during the summer.

Teammate Nathan O’Driscoll said everyone had noticed the difference.

“It’s been unreal. We were talking about it the other day. In a couple of photos, you couldn’t even notice it was him because he’s slimmed down so much,” O’Driscoll said.

“It’s a credit to him. He’s putting in the hard yakkas. He’s coming in every day and putting in the work. It’s tough in rehab and losing weight is actually harder than what people think. He’s been putting in the work. Hopefully he can build on that and be right for round one.”

Darcy took a significant step in his recovery when he joined teammates for ball work early in Monday’s training session. They were low intensity drills which didn’t put any stress on his body, but O’Driscoll said the ruckman would have relished any chance to do something football related.

“It’s been frustrating for him. You can tell,” O’Driscoll said.

“Sometimes you are going to be down and have slumps but when he’s out and around the boys, he’s got his head held high. You could see out there today how happy he was.”

The Dockers have invested a lot of money in their ruck department with Darcy contracted until the end of 2030 and Luke Jackson signed up until the end of 2029.

O’Driscoll and Darcy spent a lot of time together in rehab last season, given the midfielder also had a serious knee injury. He said Darcy’s workrate was inspiring.

emergency is for each particular line, expect the flex does not have cover.
So if you have a MID flex, and a Premium mid in doubt to play. You would put someone you know will play in flex. Then the guy in doubt in the mid line with emg cover?

Yeah I think similar to BBL, you'll want a pretty secure pick in the Flex spot to maximise the benefit of it. Last thing you want is a late out meaning you lose the auto loop of having the flex.

And just to clarify, I know there's so many posts and an answer but...

Pretending we had flex last season. I was a Gawn holder with Oliver at M9. When gawn got injured I had a donut one week. With flex if I then shifted Oliver to flex he would effectively cover Gawn? I simply wouldn't have a 23rd player to try maximise a score?

Yep that's correct, Gawn would effectively be your 23rd player with 0, so you'd get your other 22 scores.
