Tigers - They're missing a lot, especially of key drivers of the ball and I really hope the gameplan was a symptom of that and brilliant Eagles defending because if that's their genuine gameplan then it's going to be one of the ugliest seasons the league has seen. A few guys missing but their game plan basically seemed to be chip it until we get it to our worst kicks and let them turn it over. Tough watching as a neutral. A lot of their outs can shift that thankfully, albeit some of their worst kicks weren't playing

Missing - Vlastuin, Hopper, Prestia, Taranto, Short, Gibcus, Lynch, Balta, Nankervis, Brown, Broad (likely more, just gone with best 22 types).

Ross - Definitely didn't take the chance with the entire midfield missing to put his hand up. Just as incognito as he tends to always be except that one or two games a year he shows out and makes you question if he actually can play.

Mansell - Playing forward, few stints on ball, was solid.

Miller - Playing KPD, was solid.

Ralphsmith - Wing role, believe got injured, did not do anything to demand a spot.

Kosi - Playing as KPD, he was pretty good, imo. Too expensive to be relevant I think but not an awful punt in draft leagues as should see a lot of ball and can pluck a mark. Other teams also going to be very happy for him to soak up the short chips as the turnover is more a matter of when than if, if he's getting a bunch of chances.

Lalor - Read he was concussed which is a concern. Very solid lad, definitely get the Dusty comparisons, has that same chunky non-AFL type build that is quite unusual but also moves a bit like him, even had the absolutely pure or total shank thing on the kicking front. Did a couple of nice things, clean hands. Mostly forward, felt like 75% forward to me with some midfield stints. Probably a sustainable mix as would expect that basically all the midfield goes out from this game and is replaced for the AFL level guys. Definitely didn't scream a must have role though, think rookie JHF would be an optimistic target point for his fantasy scoring unless Taranto, Hopper and Prestia are out and even then it's a concern if the likes of Ross and Dow are getting preseason midfield minutes ahead of him. Probably don't get to see him again either now, I'd say I'm leaning towards no if there options are there elsewhere.

Alger - Played HF, didn't do much. Tough role in that gamestyle.

Ryan - #1 ruck role, he was alright but outplayed by Flynn, imo. For all the talk of how well he's going preseason, I didn't notice any stark improvement. Good prospect but not yet, imo and a solid 100k more than I'd want to pay for him.

McIntosh - Got genuine midfield minutes and some wing, still not good despite trying so hard.

Trezise - Played HB and was solid. Picking who will be their small defender group is an absolute cluster. Too expensive with that many options.

Fawcett/Sims/Gray - All young KPF, actually all moved well and had moments and liked their attack in the air but we're in the desperation stage if we're picking any of them for fantasy.

Sonsie - Another that I think was playing HB type role, was ok from what I saw.

Banks - And again, HB role, he was probably the best of the bunch for mine, super awkward price and MID only isn't ideal. Kicking skills are sound though. One for the draft leagues and to just watch. With Short, Vlastuin and Broad back in, there's probably only room for 2 of all these names and Brown (who is better, imo). So probably Banks in the lead. Their gamestyle suggests they could score massively though if they stick to it.

Bauer - KPF was ok, nothing special.

Campbell - Role was good, had a couple of nice moments, floated to a wing at one point. Like Ross though he wasted the chance to demand a spot in the side with the 1st midfield not playing. Really want to see him tackling it if it moves and getting a bunch of first touches if he's going to demand the role and he was just kind of there.

Blight - Very impressive, ball use was very ordinary but put himself in good positions both defensively and offensively to win the ball. At 145k he'd be a lock, at 245k he's on the watchlist if no rookies appear. Would think the 65-75 range is pretty much right for him so would be another perfect example of not bad if nothing else exists types. Definitely like that he goes for the ball but Broad and Vlastuin will be the main two in that role, imo, so wont get the chances he had today.

Hayes-Brown - Big lad, did a few nice things, kicked one of the most epic flowerbags you'll ever see on his set shot. Project ruck, wouldn't expect to see him this year.

Green - Think he was also down back, they've got about 5 guys who look and move the same so it was hard to tell. Like the rest, he was solid if it was him

Smith - Another small defender, I thought he was the 2nd best of the bunch, went off for a bit in Q2 with an injury of some sort but came back (I believe). Wasn't far off Banks for the best of their smalls so he's a chance. I think he'd be fieldable if he wins the gig but that's the harder part.

Short - Will mention him because he was probably the biggest "winner" in this game for mine despite not playing. I'm mostly looking for a reason that he can go from being a mid 90s guy to a mid 100s guy as he's not really worth picking in the former but would be a great pick in the latter. Their game plan, if you can call it that, would be that reason. Will be watching closely next game but if they're going to go insanely slow and look sideways and backwards as their first, second and third option before kicking forward, then he's the kind who is going to be constantly involved. He'd have 120 potential if this is their gamestyle all season, even if they just go with it for the first 8 weeks he'd have done the job. Definitely the thing to watch for, kind of hope they show the gamestyle but he plays crap next week just to make it more of a decision.

Hawthorn vs Geelong

Watched 3/4

General - Very good hitout, both teams with strong groups out there and both played the majority of players for all 3 quarters as well. Conditions were perfect and compared to the other games I've watched this one definitely felt like two top sides as opposed to two lower sides like the other games have. I kept feeling like it's a real shame about their byes because so many genuinely viable options.

Geelong - Terrible goal kicking aside they'd have to be happy, game was largely on their terms and they should have been about 10 goals up at the half but their finishing was very preseason! Strong side out there so should be pretty good indicators on roles and the like.

Missing - Stanley, Conway, Mannagh, Humphries, Stengle, Martin, Bews, C. Guthrie & O'Connor - Lot of fringe 22 guys here.

Smith - Played predominantly wing, couple of CBA to my eye, bit of time at HF, pretty sure he was off for good by 5 minutes into the 3rd. Played a really nice game, even hit a few targets by foot, imagine if the Cats manage to teach him to kick to his own team. Gut running was there, some good wins in the contest, just a good hitout.

Bruhn - Midfield and HF role, definitely in the peripheral midfield group rather than main mix in this game. Was solid but nothing to really command any thing more than that as the summary.

Cameron - Solid up forward, same old.

Kolo - Came on in Q3, customary role. Not relevant himself but if that's a pecking order sign, it's great.

Holmes - Probably the Cats best. Pretty pure midfield role, main moving hit target (albeit kind of meaningless given their rucks) and found a ton of it in both the contest and in space. Would be among my first picked without the bye and absolutely still in the mix for mine, definitely has 110+ in him, imo, whether it's this year is going to be the big question there.

Knevitt - Another huge positive for the Cats and us fantasy players if it holds up. To my eye he was their 2nd midfielder behind Holmes and he really worked hard to justify that. Lot of preseason talk and he definitely backed that up. Highlight for me was actually a non-stat play but he chased out of a stoppage for a solid 35m to apply pressure, coaches love that stuff. Had another awesome run down tackle on Day as well but found plenty of it too, so not purely reactive. Would say that Guthrie the only midfield missing and I'm not sold he's best 22 anymore or midfield if he is, so definitely a chance the role sticks. Would be must field level rookie in this role.

Edwards - Young ruck, moves well and has plenty of potential but it's an awfully long way off at this point, Meek bullied him.

Bowes - Started midfield, was in defense from Q2 onward. He was solid in both roles.

Clark - Started wing, got a few spurts on ball, doesn't look to be any real progression from last year based on this game. Not relevant at his price anyway.

O'Sullivan - The other Cats' standout to me, looks and moves quite a lot like Will Day, apparently 198cm per commentators but he moves smaller than that but still very good in the air. Kicking was very hit or miss and looks like it's probably a technical issue that will be a constant for him but the way he played he showed a ton of potential. Kolo has always been a good team man but have to think you go with the very high upside guy over a guy who has grafted together his entire career. Big tick for mine, definitely should be in the mix round 1 and think he'd be fieldable, albeit ideally you would be looping.

SDK - Rucked, well he lined up in the ruck at least, except for a couple of short bounces he reacted faster to and a couple where Meek let him jump he was annihilated in the actual ruck contest. Did a few things around the ground but not as much as you'd need to be sacrificing the ruck to the extent that he is. Such a tough position for the Cats because Edwards isn't ready, Stanley isn't good either and Blicavs is a good #2 only, so if Conway isn't fit it's basically SDK. Funnily for fantasy he'd be fine as think he grows into it at ground level but it's hard because he's so soft in the tackle as well which is normally where you want the athletic ruck to make up for the hitout loss. Will be watching again next match to see if he can show some improvement, really has to do more to disengage and not get grounded, he's not strong enough to beat most midfielders in that kind of contest nevermind rucks. For mine he's a draft guy and more fantasy relevant for his impact on other guys than himself but will watch eagerly next game, I rate Meek so you'd hope he beats him soundly.

Duncan - Came on Q3 in defense. Probably suggests he's fringe best 22 at this point.

Dempsey - Pure wing role, was solid but nothing there for mine as a pure MID in SC.

Atkins - Mostly mid, little bit at HB, same old with him, in the mix but would expect they try and push him out for the more dynamic guys like Holmes and Knevitt.

Myers - One of those guys I think would be relevant if it wasn't for round 0, looks in ripping nick and ready for a big season.

Neale - 2nd KPF role, didn't ruck very much at all.

Mullin - Playing as a defensive small defender. Did the least of the guys fighting for those spots but good potential.

Dangerfield - Pretty sure he played pure KPF for them, if he had any mid minutes I didn't see them. Only played first 2 quarters. No idea if preseason or genuine role, started his career in the role wouldn't be weird if he finished in it also. He was very good outside of goal kicking as well. If he's out of the mid, huge result for Knevitt. I expect he still goes in at times but can see why they'd phase him out.

Henry x2 - One back, one forward, exactly what you expect.

Zuthrie - Defense, same old.

Clohesy - His game, imo, is the flawless example of doing everything you can to elevate your position when given a chance, been several guys I've mentioned in writeups so far doing the opposite but he was great. I expect he goes straight out for Stengle and possibly Mannagh as well but he can't do much more then he did today. Playing as a small forward his pressure was excellent, he bobbed up in dangerous positions and made a lot of unrewarded runs to stretch the Hawks defenders to create openings for others. Was excellent but he's definitely behind the Close, Miers and Stengle trio so hard to find the spot, especially if Danger playing forward.

Stewart - I only noticed one CBA from him, straight up practice of that defensive spitter role he played most of last year. Obviously no tags in preseason but he was dominant, Finn would have gone to him at QT if this was a real game. Of everyone on the field he looked the best physically, absolutely peak condition to the eye test and played like it. Like Holmes, would be in my first couple picked without the bye and this game did nothing to persuade me away from him regardless of it. The obvious problem is Mills is even better value and then you've got Smith, Holmes, Knevitt and O'Sullivan that all are probably better value use of those ultra expensive bye slots! Going to be a brutal call, I think ultimately probably just have to plan for a round 4 swoop on them after the one price change rather than start them.

Blicavs - Started at FB, then drifted to a wing for a bit, also seemed to go forward but mostly he was the clear 2nd ruck for them. Not sure if the Hawks weird 2nd ruck moves threw the game plan out and they were expecting him to just go with Chol in the ruck but was hard to nail down where he was when not rucking.

Hawks - Would have to be happy the way they fought back after a pretty ordinary start. Always hard for those manic pressure sides like the Hawks to be as effective in the preseason when most are going at 75%, effort guys always look a bit weaker in the preseason and the skilled runners always look better. Didn't look to be any drastic changes to their style to me.

Missing - Impey, Jiath, Amon, D'Ambrosio, Breust, Watson, Dear & Barrass - Probably some others but no one I expect plays, lot of very similar types missing.

Morrison - He was solid, wing/HB type of role as accustomed. Would imagine he's out for the Impey/Amon/D'Ambrosio trio though.

Newcombe - Pure midfield, was solid all day. I can't pick him with that bye but wouldn't be at all surprised if he bounces back and goes 105ish this year.

Worpel - Still a thing. Still trying really hard, didn't try to kick very often which is excellent for the Hawks. It still amazes me they haven't found anyone to push him out of the AFL side.

Sicily - Started back and was his dominant self, you can more or less copy and paste Stewart here minus the "looks in great shape" part, Sicily looks as physically ordinary as ever with so much tape on the shoulders it basically covered his jumper but he's still dynamic. Went forward in Q3 and looked as ordinary as he does there but there recruiting was so odd and sure suggests they want him forward. I think he's exceptional value and in defense he can bounce back to 110+ quite easily now he has help but I just can't shake the whole why recruit 2 more KP defenders unless you're moving Sicily forward bug so unlike the two Cats guys, I'm a lot more happy to wait and see here.

Frost - Same old in defense, was solid.

Nash - Kind of similar to Worpel to be honest, I like Nash and I like how both try very hard but it still amazes me they're in their core midfield group. Was what you'd expect from him.

Day - The clear standout for the Hawks. I don't trust his body at all but if it holds up he definitely can go 110+ this year, but for some pretty ordinary finishing he should have had 5 to 3QT. Now preseason games always favour the speedy outside runners (applies equally to Holmes above) but he was damn good. Did a phenomenal job of spitting out the front and finding gaps in the Cats' zone repeatedly. He's such a talent. As a mid, I don't personally think he's worth the risk as a starting pick because he really does need to be at 115 through the first 6 weeks and his durability record is horrendous but he's definitely someone I'll have my eye on come round 4 if he's delivering. I also think he's going to get tagged if he plays like this and that's going to be a serious question for his style of player.

Moore - Same old for him, high HF pushing up and back and just gut running. Bye kills him for me but will be very high on my list of guys to watch for a bad game and scoop up. Think he's a good 90+ bet with 100 on the higher end of projections very possible again.

Scrimshaw - Same old down back.

Hardwick - Played forward in first half, didn't notice him Q3 but can't say I was watching for him.

Meek - Dominant as he should be against non-rucks and a child, albeit a very large child. Was really good at ground level as well with his 2nd efforts. He's another one in this game that I'd probably be starting if it wasn't for his bye but with the bye and what it demands of anyone you pick that has it, it's just not worth the risk.

Chol - Barely rucked, almost exclusively forward, still refuses to take easy marks in the hands so instead turns it into easy spoils trying to chest mark things. I have no idea why coaches haven't put a shock collar on him and zapped that crap out of him (admittedly, not sure torture is allowed), it's infuriating to watch on a guy with arms that long and such an epic leap that if he would just high point or even extend in front he's almost unstoppable. Just goes with his whole "I don't care at all" persona.

Gunston - FF, not relevant.

Maginnes - Played forward, was actually alright. Didn't tag today.

Weddle - Similar to Blicavs, working out where he was playing was impossible. They really threw the Cats out by having him as the 2nd ruck from HB mostly but when he'd change back out of the ruck he'd often go forward instead. Mostly at HB, the clear 2nd ruck and then floating, was a hard role to reconcile. Not good for him in fantasy terms though as he gets out of the rebounding patterns and I'm not sure the ruck role helps him as he's rarely going to win it so becomes a pure ground level play and haven't seen a lot of midfield craft to date. Absolute specimen physically though.

Battle - Playing defense as you'd expect. Definitely not relevant if Sicily is there, probably not relevant even if he isn't.

Ward - Played on the other wing to Morrison. Same story, be very surprised if he's there when everyone returns but I still like him, I know if I was several other teams I'd be targeting him as the midfielder he is after the Hawks have devalued him playing out of position on the wing.

Mackenzie - Played a fair bit of midfield and seemed to play some wing/HB/HF as well. I rate him very highly but not for fantasy yet, just one of those classy types with time.

Serong - Played defense, expect he's straight out for all the guys missing but did nothing wrong.

C. Macdonald - Same role as last year, the more anchored HF role. Was solid but want to see a bit more expansive a role to pick him. Like a lot of others, their bye just creates too much downside risk for mine but will watch as an upgrade target.

Ginnivan - Pure small forward.

Mitchell - Had a really good game but I can't see how he's best 22 when everyone returns.

B. Macdonald - Came on in Q3, ran really fast, didn't do much else. Played at HB also and even further back than the Mitchell/Serong pair I can't see playing.

Again, real shame about these two teams being in the round 0 bye group, especially Cats in the worst bye and Hawks in the last bye, just hurts a lot, will be an absolutely ballsy play by anyone grabbing a couple of guys from this game, definitely could work if they go bang but definitely very high risk, reward play.

How did the new recruits and recent draftees fare?

GEELONG

2. Jay Polkinghorne: Joined the game for the last quarter and was firmly positioned at full forward, playing on young Hawk Bodie Ryan.

3. Bailey Smith: There was no missing “Baz” with the long locks matched with a flowing white headband. It might have been 547 days since his last competitive hitout but it didn’t show in the thick of the midfield, with deft touch and cleanliness at stoppages. Set up a couple before sitting out most of the second half.

11. Mitchell Edwards: Took the rucking reins in the third quarter before Rhys Stanley came into proceedings and looked solid before moving deep forward.

14. Connor O’Sullivan: Looked lively in the backline with a couple of handy intercept marks working alongside Mark Blicavs. Also kicked a goal, showing his value at both ends.

15. George Stevens: Started at centre bounces in the final quarter as a few top-liners took a break, and will only continue to develop with some very handy midfielders to learn directly from.

21. Oliver Wiltshire: Flashed in late with a beautiful checkside goal at the Joel Selwood end.

HAWTHORN

21. Noah Mraz: Came into it late but unfortunately saw plenty of the wrong side of it late as opponent Shannon Neale piled on a handful of goals.

24. Josh Battle: Took Henry early and showed plenty of speed and strength in transitioning the ball out of half-back. Limped off midway through the final term with a corked leg/ankle.

26. Bodie Ryan: Got a taste for it late in the piece working deep in defence.

27. Will McCabe: The first-round pick saw some forwardline action in the final quarter and took a nice grab late. Showed plenty of calm.

AFL Supercoach match simulation: Which players and rookies are impressing?
AFL Supercoach match simulation: Which players and rookies are impressing?
Story by Kieran Francis • 4hrs

Geelong vs. Hawthorn Supercoach tips, notes, rookies

Connor O'Sullivan (GEE) - DEF - $148,700
O'Sullivan, a first round pick in 2023, performed excellently as an intercept defender.

There is plenty of competition for that role at the Cats but he is one to add to your watchlist.

Sam De Koning (GEE) - RUC - $361,900
Intriguingly played in the ruck, a position he impressed in last season.

Despite playing well, it's a risk to select him because if he moves back to defence, you are left with a low scorer.

Bailey Smith (GEE) - MID-FWD - $389,200
Dominated the first half, finding plenty of the ball, but did turn the ball over quite often.

Likely to rise in price and is an outside chance of being a premium so should be a safe selection in the forward line.

He just might not make as much cash as a good rookie though.

Will Day (HAW) - MID - $491,300
Another possible breakout premium in 2025, Day has all the attributes to be a Supercoach beast.

Averaged in the 90s the past two seasons and is set to soar into the 100s if he can stay fit.

The way he moves and attacks the contest is reminiscent of Marcus Bontempelli.

James Sicily (HAW) - DEF - $532,900
With the question of whether he will be forward or back, Sicily played his entire time in defence.

However, Tom Barrass didn't play and will return for the Hawks' next pre-season match.

Max Holmes (GEE) - DEF-MID - $533,900
Looks set to play the entire year in the midfield and with defensive eligibility, he is a tantalising option.

Defenders and forwards who play solely in midfield are gold and it looks like Holmes is in that category.

This is one selection that is unlikely to backfire.

West Coast vs. Richmond Supercoach tips, notes, rookies

Elijah Hewett (WCE) - MID-FWD - $122,800
A breakout star in 2023, Hewett had his entire 2024 wiped out with injury.

Wasn't particularly noticeable against the Tigers but will play round one if fit.

He is a lock for forward line rookie at this price if selected.

Bo Allan (WCE) - DEF-MID - $136,000
High draft pick that is likely to get plenty of game time during the season.

Didn't show a whole lot against the Tigers, so keep an eye on him next match.

Sam Lalor (RIC) - MID - $203,500
An excellent first public outing for the no.1 draft pick, kicking two goals and showing plenty in the midfield.

Was concussed late in the game but should be right for when the season starts.

Is a bit pricey, but will likely play most games at the lowly Tigers in 2025.

Indigenous All Stars vs. Fremantle Supercoach tips, notes, rookies

Liam Reidy (FRE) - RUC - $132,600

With Sam Darcy's injury, Reidy was the no.1 ruck, allowing Jackson to play a majority up forward.

While he is unlikely to score big points, he could be a decent bench option with the chance of playing during the season.

Playing for Fremantle also means plenty of Sunday games for the captain's loophole.

Nathan O'Driscoll (FRE) - MID - $198,000
Fremantle's top Supercoach scorer in the match with 104.

O'Driscoll only managed two games last season because of injury, which sees his price be quite attractive.

The 22-year-old is definitely an option to consider, with a 70-plus average through the season likely to net you decent cash.

Jy Simpkin (IAS) - MID-FWD - $429,300
After two seasons of sub-80 averages affected by injury and concussion, Simpkin looked back to his best with a score of 154 against the Dockers.

However, you must take into account his recent injury history and awkward price.

The fact he is a forward, means he could possibly be squeezed into that line depending on available premiums.

Keep an eye on his next match.

Jason Horne-Francis - MID/FWD - $537,000
Horne-Francis was devastating in the 'striker' role, kicking three goals and picking up 132 Supercoach points.

The problem with his role is it is prone to huge swings with scores, as seen by Dustin Martin's latter years.

To select Horne-Francis, there must be an understanding that there is not enough forwards with consistent performances in the pool.

Western Bulldogs vs. Essendon Supercoach tips, notes, rookies

Sam Davidson (WB) - FWD - $113,500
Didn't set the world on fire but showed promise with his athletic and physical attributes.

Is in the frame for a best 23 position with Jamarra Ugle-Hagan ruled out for round one.

Keep an eye on his next performance.

Saad El-Hawli (ESS) - DEF-MID - $119,900
The yet-to-debut winger struggled to make a huge impression on the match, gathering 12 possessions.

He is the most selected Bomber player in the game currently, but he is a watch-and-wait for round one selection until locking in your team.

Isaac Kako (ESS) - FWD-MID - $149,500
Almost a lock for Supercoach selection, unless several better forward rookies emerge.

His scoring might be erratic, being a small forward, but his pre-season performances suggest an Opening Round debut.

Looks absolutely dynamic around goal.

Elijah Tsatas (ESS) - MID - $191,200
Picked up 31 possessions and attended most centre bounces for the Bombers.

Has had knocks on his disposal quality, but at under $200k, you would be loving a player who could average 20-plus possessions.

Ryley Sanders (WB) - MID - $339,100
Was one of the best afield but played in a midfield without Marcus Bontempelli and Tom Liberatore.

Steer clear at this price - especially when his midfield time is going to be heavily reduced.

Joel Freijah (WB) - DEF - $370,400
An underrated revelation last season, playing 13 games, including a 29-disposal effort against North Melbourne.

Freijah was probably best on ground but is sitting at an incredibly awkward price.

The Bulldogs have plenty of defensive rebounders as well, meaning Freijah is a huge risk as a mid-pricer and should be avoided.
