I will post some commentary on the results shortly however final SC results have just opened so I am busy soaking in the glory of my 93rd overall.

I will also post a final version of all stats either tonight or tomorrow. I will then finish with some reflections on the comp.

It was nice to see that somehow we ended up a reasonable game in the climax of the BBL itself and also the Big Bash Fantasy Sweep. However I suspect Glenn Maxwell and his Stars team mates don’t currently share that view.

Points Comp
In a thrilling finish James C made up the necessary 64 points by outscoring Andrew Sp by 81 points in the final game to be crowned the points comp champion. James was lucky enough to draw some reasonably scoring players and a captain that actually scored a point to place 16th in the final game. Unfortunately for Andrew Sp he drew 2 doughnuts including his captain and this was enough to finish a lowish 44th and sink his overall campaign. Ian D flew underneath the radar to claim 3rd with 21st place in the final game. The victory margin for James was 17 with the margin to between 2nd and 3rd being 402 points. It was actually satisfying from comp design point of view that the lead changed in the final game.

Interestingly James timed his run perfectly only holding the overall lead once for the season and that was after the last game. He was 3rd after 6 games but then dropped as low as 37th after 15 games. However the key to his victory was his consistency at the business end where in the final 9 games his average placing was 15th and was no higher than 27th in any of those games. Andrew can justifiable count himself as unlucky after he led this comp after 22 of the 61 games including 22 of the final 27 games. His lowest position was 11th after 9 games. However unfortunately not when it really counted. Ian Davey actually led after 2 games however dropped to as low as 32nd as late as game 40 however had a strong run since then to take the final podium position.

Ladder Comp
It was not such a thrilling finish in the ladder comp grand final with long time supporter of my comps Russell D taking this title with a 57 point victory over @Tibor with James Couper coming in 3rd 19 points further back. Interestingly generally the ladder comp final’s participants had a poor scoring final game with half the field (8 of 16) placing 37th for the game or higher. Russell was lucky enough to draw the highest scoring player for the game as captain and no doughnuts. @Tibor also drew a decent scoring captain however did draw Nic Maddinson (sorry) who scored a blob and that was probably the difference. We are well aware of James C game so we don’t need to dwell on that however needless to say he can add third in the ladder comp to his nice little collect in the points comp.

Last
The only thing left to mention is that David S finished last and as is custom and practice in any sweep will get his money back. David finished 283 points behind 58th who was his niece Olivia S. @toxic was 5 points higher in 57th. Interestingly @toxic occupied last place for 33 consecutive weeks and was as much as 786 point clear in that position after game 41. It is almost the cruellest thing of all that he didn’t get his money back after having to endure all that (and the associated commentary).

Final averages for BBL. Note that round 14 is the 5 finals.

Not surprising is that the top 3 were position 1, 9 & 8. Also not surprising was that no 6 was ranked 11 (and by some distance). More surprising was that no 3 was ranked 10th.

The final stats posting this year is the one that I have only posted once before which determines how close each winner and each last placed person got the highest possible or lowest possible score in each game. There are a 13,824 possible combinations of players in each game so the chances of somebody drawing the perfect score or the lowest possible score is pretty low. However having said that I can now report that it did actually happen once and that was in game 41 where @Diabolical scored the highest possible score in that game. He drew the highest scoring player in all 6 of the brackets and the highest of those was his captain. In some respects this was the most significant achievement in the comp this year. Given there only 61 games it means there was only a 1 in 226.6 chance that it would happen.

For the records there was also an instance were the lowest possible score was drawn however that was in the significantly rain affected game 39 between Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes where the game was abandoned with the Sixers on 2-45 after 6.4 overs. In that game the lowest possible score was 1 point and each of James D, Ian D and Benn S scored that amount.

Hopefully the following table is pretty intuitive however note that the rank column shows the ranking (highest for first and lowest for last) of the 13824 combinations.

We are all done now and I would like to think that the comp has been a success. A special thanks to @Tails for his support of the comp including posting all the batting positions as they occurred during every game. Also thanks to the regular posters in this thread who provided motivation for me to continue to post the scores and stats as the season went on.

I was pretty happy with the comp set up and think the number of players and bracketing of players worked quite well. I think this was a little better than what was done in the World Cup sweep last year. There may be argument for 1-3, 4-7 and 8-11 however not overwhelming so. The 2 different comps worked ok I think however the ladder comp probably didn’t quite achieve part of its intended objective of keeping most in contention until near the end. There were quite a few who languished near the bottom for a lot of the year and were out of the contention for both comps pretty early. As those that have participate in my comps before know, I usually design something into them that gives people something to aim for right until the end. It was difficult this time given the prize pool and the fact I was keen to do the ladder comp so that is food for thought for next time.

I did get the sense that the majority of participants were reasonably casual observers rather than seriously engaged. That is not necessarily a bad thing but it is a lot of effort for a sustained period so I will consider this if/when I choose to run another one of these. From my own personal perspective I probably found myself in that boat as I did unexpectedly well in the actual SuperCoach comp.

Thanks to all those who participated and I hope you found it worth your while. As always happy to take any feedback on what you did or didn’t like which I can consider for future comps. I am not sure if I would run this again next year for the BBL. I might but obviously don’t need to make that decision for a long while yet. I am also developing another little brainchild for next year that should appeal to those frustrated BBL SCers out there. I would generally count myself amongst that group however with a 93rd placing this year I really can’t.

Thanks again.
