I think all of the non-BBL competitions are struggling with that. Maybe the Sheffield Shield should start just after the AFL Grand Final.
I doubt they can find a way to make it happen, but the shield season almost needs to be fully completed before the BBL starts. It's benefit is to get test players in form and give the next generation of players a chance to show what they can do. The games played post the summer test series struggle to provide that.
Wouldn't surprise me if the Shield season soon becomes a 5 Round competition.
It doesn't really serve its purpose when your best players are unavailable and might only play 1-2 rounds at best.
I used to like it when games were played at the same time as the Tests so you knew players in the Test side were getting put under pressure.
Theoretically they should be able to play Shield rounds in 28 days.
Play 4 days , 3 off
Play 4 days , 3 off
Play 4 days , 3 off
Play 4 days , 3 off = 28 days
then start again
I still think they need to move the Boxing Day & SCG Test (something I doubt they would do) and start the BBL Boxing Day.
They actually need more double headers to try and shorten the season.
This new T20 tournament in the UAE if it gets off the ground could cause serious problems for CA plus if the BPL resumes it's normal time slot.
The option I would look at , in conjunction with the BCCI , is have the BBL October/November and create a "window" so all our players can participate in the whole tournament.
The big problem with cricket though is it actually 3 sports in one
* Tests and first class
* ODI and domestic
* T20 and domestic
Ideally you would get rid of domestic one day competitions and International T20's.
And Tests have always been series , even if they were a one off game (like a soccer International) , the test still takes 5 days to play.
And you pretty much have 9 countries all sharing the same season and fighting for fixtures.
Maybe we need to start utilising the winter months more for Tests/ODI in Darwin & Cairns.
Or in the future countries might play more series in the UAE.
