The over from Jimmy Anderson yesterday where he dismissed both Gill and Rahane (twice!) is one of the finest overs in test cricket I've ever seen.

I suspect Anderson will make the trip to Australia later this year at 39 years of age.
I don’t think he would be putting himself through this tour without having sights in Australia.

I would think his goal would be to retire following an Ashes win, but then why would t he want to retire in front of a Old Trafford crowd? 🤔

I feel like the domestic one day comp has been treated mostly as an inconvenience that we need to “get out of the way” for some time.

One dayers are now our worst format, which I feel should not be a surprise.
I think all of the non-BBL competitions are struggling with that. Maybe the Sheffield Shield should start just after the AFL Grand Final.

I doubt they can find a way to make it happen, but the shield season almost needs to be fully completed before the BBL starts. It's benefit is to get test players in form and give the next generation of players a chance to show what they can do. The games played post the summer test series struggle to provide that.

Surely based on his previous record Down Under , he only plays in Adelaide.

60 wickets in 18 Tests

Wouldn't surprise me if the Shield season soon becomes a 5 Round competition.

It doesn't really serve its purpose when your best players are unavailable and might only play 1-2 rounds at best.

I used to like it when games were played at the same time as the Tests so you knew players in the Test side were getting put under pressure.

Theoretically they should be able to play Shield rounds in 28 days.

Play 4 days , 3 off
Play 4 days , 3 off
Play 4 days , 3 off
Play 4 days , 3 off = 28 days

then start again

I still think they need to move the Boxing Day & SCG Test (something I doubt they would do) and start the BBL Boxing Day.

They actually need more double headers to try and shorten the season.

This new T20 tournament in the UAE if it gets off the ground could cause serious problems for CA plus if the BPL resumes it's normal time slot.

The option I would look at , in conjunction with the BCCI , is have the BBL October/November and create a "window" so all our players can participate in the whole tournament.

The big problem with cricket though is it actually 3 sports in one

* Tests and first class
* ODI and domestic
* T20 and domestic

Ideally you would get rid of domestic one day competitions and International T20's.

And Tests have always been series , even if they were a one off game (like a soccer International) , the test still takes 5 days to play.

And you pretty much have 9 countries all sharing the same season and fighting for fixtures.

Maybe we need to start utilising the winter months more for Tests/ODI in Darwin & Cairns.

Or in the future countries might play more series in the UAE.

I certainly agree that they need to create a dedicated window for the BBL so the best Australian players can play. Would the IPL be anything like the spectacle it is if you took out the top 15 to 20 Indian players, yet that is what Australia is trying to do with the BBL.

I see 2 options.
  1. A Oct/Nov option as you suggest. That then frees up the rest of the summer for International games and Sheffield Shield.
  2. A Nov/Dec option that finishes before Christmas and leads into the Boxing Day test which would be the first test with Sydney and the rest to follow.
There is possibly a third which is Jan/Feb however I think that is too late and general populous is over cricket by then.

It also needs to be done in a 5 week window. I think the tournament stalls a bit at finals time because it loses its every night momentum. Difficult one because teams need time to travel. Maybe they just need to play all the finals at a single venue so the every night momentum is maintained and it finishes quicker.

Condensing the fixture further through double headers etc is difficult because of the implications it has on the teams that travel, in particular Perth. However if they could arrange it so they play Stars/Gades and also Sixers/Thunder in a single travel it might work.

Not only does the IPL have the best Indian players but it also has 32 of the highest quality OS players available to play (and another 32 on the bench).

It still allows the development of their younger players to come through though and play.

Some of the OS players the BBL attracts is a disgrace , some very ordinary first class cricketers at best.

I am sure we are the only domestic T20 competition where our own best players rarely play.

The travel factor with the Scorchers is a massive factor.

I think the BPL play in only 3 venues each season so that is maybe something that could be looked at , but teams will then contain they don't get the same H & A balance.

Maybe send the Heat , Hurricanes & Strikers to Perth at the one time or something.

I like the Oct/Nov timeframe for Big Bash.

Get the best of the best here , get India involve , suck up to them that it helps the IPL if your players play here as well.

Still would allow 2-3 shield games before the Boxing Day test.

I don't mind that idea of the Boxing Day test being the first & the SCG Test the second.

I grew up when Australia Day was always a Test in Adelaide and from memory Perth may have been in early February.

Then like you said the Scorchers can play the Sydney & Melbourne teams back to back on seperate road trips.

But no doubt nothing will change and instead they will introduce a 9th and 10th side.

Can't see the VICS playing their shield and one day games in NSW next week as planned. Of the 4 remaining shield rounds, the VICS need to play 6 games. I'm not sure they will get that chance.
