What !? There's just no way, Doolan takes a beauty at short leg, again !! Duminy is out !
Johnson changes the angle, round the wicket... and Doolan has done it again! Amazing reflexes, takes it on the second attempt, Duminy can't believe it - he'd connected sweetly with a full-pitched delivery on leg stump and probably hit it well enough to get four. Instead, he's heading for the hutch. He is out for 10 (60).
Ryan McLaren joins de Villiers, South Africa is 5/128.

10 off 60 balls for Duminy = slow going LOL

That was a ripper wasn't it!!

Johnson ends up Man of the Match with career best figures of 12/127. 49 wickets in his last 6 tests at an average of 13, plus all the late order runs he has also got!!
Only seen 3 or 4 bowlers in all my time get on a hot streak like this. It is crazy good. Exciting to see someone bowl such sustained quality at high pace.
South Africa can only pray he goes off his game somehow.
He's not leaving many wickets for Ryan Harris and the others to take.
Greedy bastard.

This is first ball Amla faced against Mitchell Johnson in second innings.
Geez, that is not fun. He did well to keep his composure afterwards.

Might be considered a bit macabre but it is fascinating and rare ability to put batsmen at elite level of cricket in real danger which Mitchell Johnson has been doing recently. Thankfully young McLaren did not get hurt too seriously the other night but he's missing next Test with concussion. Thankfully helmets prevent more horrible damage.

During the recent Test in South Africa, South African born Kevin Pieterson twitted the following:

Kevin Pietersen ‏@KP24 Feb 13
"When you facing someone as quick as Mitchell, your instinct occasionally makes you do things you shouldn't.. PACE causes indecision!"

Kevin Pietersen ‏@KP24 Feb 13
"There is a HUGE difference when facing someone at 140kmh compared to 150kmh.."

I agree with him and he would know facing up to Johnson recently and other quick bowlers at the highest level.

There have been a few quicker bowlers than Johnson in recent decade and a bit, but I doubt any have been able to regularly have the ball so consistently in real danger areas at batsmen to intimidate as much as he does. Also he tends to have less difference between his quicker spells.
It is both scary and addictive to watch when a real fast bowler has top class batsmen knowing if they are not real sharp with their footwork and decisions that they are in real danger of being hurt bad. As Devilliers said for South Africa, you got got to expect to wear a few bruises facing Johnson if you intend to be out there for awhile.

Youtube has lots of cricket stuff of fast bowlers that were able to really put the best batsmen in danger.
Michhael Holding of West Indies was exciting to watch and in early 90's in Carribbean Aussie bowling coach McDermott regularly was troubling all the best West Indian bats that were no 1 team at the time.

Sounds like even first day but South Africa have to win a Test somewhere.
I was expecting 1 all result before the series. I still sense with Steyn in South Africa team and decent batting line-up they should win a Test somewhere.

South Africa 423 allout
2 century makers in their innings
5 wickets to Lyon and another 2 to part time spinners Smith and Clarke. Meaning of the 9 wickets that fell to bowlers 7 of them to spinners.

Early I know, but this Test on track for a draw unless Steyn can find some way to bowl us out cheaply or Lyon knocks them over cheaply in 2nd innings.
We are none for 7 in reply after a few overs.

Going early and prepared to look like a fool if we get rolled, but South Africa score definitely unders. Allowed themselves to get bogged down and gave a way wickets. However they did chew up a lot of time so it will take something special and an aggressive declaration or two for a result on this pitch. As an aside, possibly the worst test pitch I have seen. At least sub continent pitches offer something for spinners. I don't think anyone, batsman or bowler would enjoy playing here! Certainly makes for dull viewing.

It would be ballsy to drop him after scoring recent centuries and probably a little unfair but to be honest, my gut feel is, if we dropped him for Hughes we'd be better off in short term and longer term. I just don't think Rogers will handle the step up in class of facing Steyn. I'm not expecting him to average 30 this series.

If Doolan bats well he gets another go.
Probably was being a little too generous to Rogers to even mention 30....
He is out again but to Philander.. LBW

Is anyone else seeing a connection between this pitch and Philanders supposed virus/hamstring niggle? Has had a reputation throughout his career, similar to Akhtar in that he seems to put a lot more in when there is life in the pitch. Seems like Smith may have gone up to him before the game and told him you're not bailing on this one. He certainly doesn't seem at all hampered by whatever injury he was supposed to have.

Damn, Rogers out early exposed Doolan early and now he is gone too.. A little trouble at 2 for 41

God, I hope selectors have not gone 1 Test too many with Rogers and cost us this Test.
