Cameron Green has rescued Australia with a counterattacking century after New Zealand’s pace attack wreaked havoc on a topsy-turvy opening day of the first Test in Wellington.

The West Australian all-rounder repaid the selectors’ faith with a gritty 103 not out, his highest Test score since being elected to No. 4, guiding the tourists towards 9-279 at stumps on day one at the Basin Reserve.

It was Green’s second century in Tests, reaching the milestone in the final over of the day by carving a cut shot through point. He raced from fifty his triple figures in just 46 deliveries, finding the boundary rope 16 times during his career-defining knock.

👏👏👏

Massive for his career- he now has belief he belongs/ can lock down the number 4 spot.

Marnus 1 off 27 balls looked awful - his form has been a real worry for awhile now.

Not a good day for those that went the early crow and said Green can’t bat four in Test cricket…

Brilliant knock.
🙋‍♂

I was just using the same strategy as I did with Steve Smith who I also said would never make it as a test batsman.

Seriously though it was a great knock but as a number 4 he will need to do it consistently before I admit total defeat. I hope he can.

So surprising how much stick this got in comparison to Smith batting at opener. Green has been pretty dominant in shield at 3-4, so just needed the opportunity.

I didn’t get to watch any of it unfortunately, but very pleased for him.

Feel for him but it happens too often to be just bad luck doesn’t it?

Unfortunately I think he will have to make his name in the commentary box where he does pretty well I think.
Yep, will have to give it away. Not sure if it's his technique or reaction time to get his head out of the way, there's only so many bullets you can dodge.

This one is definitely due to technique. Body weight balance doesn't allow many options of movement. This is the worse technique I've seen from him in all of the incidents. So sad to see. :(

Smith out for 9.

I have a terrible record on Steve Smith predictions but this is starting to have the whiff of some of our other greats near the end where you keep expecting them to come good and they just don’t. The odd occasion they do get some runs it looks much harder than it used to be.

I was just saying to my dad when Cummins came in that I'd probably want him at the crease out of anyone in the team in a situation like this - and that includes all the batters!

Hard to imagine there'll be any changes now. Much as the collective batting hasn't been what we would expect, everyone's put their hand up at some stage in the summer, and let's be honest, Steve Smith has a career's worth of credits in the bank.

Incidentally, Pat Cummins's record as captain: 18 wins, 7 losses, 4 draws. Over 60% from what is now a good sample size, comparable with the all time greats.
