It still brings a rookie onto the field when you could otherwise trade around the bye.
From my scratchy memory you are still only getting the best 18 players during bye rounds? Also those guys will be useful for the "real" bye rounds IMO.

I do get what he's saying, but how is it any different from any other player that you hold over their bye? You will have to use a trade to get Houston in as cover for the next 3 byes particularly if he's averaging say 100. At his price he's still very good value even at 96.4.
Getting Houston over the byes is just an upgrade, no different from upgrading any other rookie.

FWIW, when injuries and everything kick in around the byes, you need all 3 trades for downgrades/upgrades just to field 18 each week. It might be contrary thinking but having a couple of players miss in Round 11 makes it that little bit easier to have a full 18 in the multi bye rounds.

I'd planned pretty well I thought last year for the byes but with a couple of short term injuries to keepers and a couple of non playing rookies, it was bloody hard to get 18 on each week.. pretty sure I wore at least one donut

Got lucky with the rookies last year and only had one "bad" round last year, I think the first round I had surplus players but not guns from memory.

Trading him in at R12 would be perfect, you get a bye free player at R12 when you otherwise probably wouldn’t be trading or would be trading in a player with an upcoming bye. Not too many Port/Saints premiums you’d want so makes sense to hold off on him.

Another point is that I expect R11 will be a standard round and not Best 18. In the bye rounds, you can have the benefit of poor rookie scores droping out (if you have planned well enough to have 19-20).

Each to their own strategy though. For me, he’s not viable anymore.

Yes you’ve sold me it’s the right call (reluctantly) to hold off on him.

I only have Houston and Georgiades and no St Kilda players, so I'd be willing to take that risk, furthermore, I may have upgraded a rookie by then. ?

Yep, understood. There's 2 players that are in my team now with that round 11 bye, Houston and Roberton, I have them in for differing reasons so I'll have to look at them individually.
In Houston's case, he's in because I see him as possibly a season long keeper who should score well, is underpriced for his potential output so should make a bit of cash, not that it matters if I keep him all year, it does matter though if I have him as an upgrade target because then I am paying way more $ than I am if I have him from the start. I'm thinking he's around a D4-D6 keeper, being a DPP I'll have the opportunity of choosing 3 different bench rookies to cover that round 11 bye so the points loss is mitigated to some extent.

I don't see Roberton as a trade in target, more as a stepping stone to a premo. So he'll be upgraded to someone like a Sicily/Williams/Laird after round 14. He does represent good value and should make a bit of cash while hopefully outscoring an on field rookie. His loss of points by having a rookie cover him over round 11 should be a bit less because of his output.

I'm only a noob to this game so my views might be completely wrong, but I do understand your rationale.

I'd still go ahead and pick any Stk/PA cash cow / stepping stone/ rookie as you can simply trade them out in Rd 11 anyway if not earlier as they should have achieved their primary purpose of generating some funds by then anyway.

Off the back of the above analysis & discussion, I may just switch Houston to Roberton in my starting side with the plan to use him as a cash cow and trade out at this Bye. This may also allow me to afford some of the expensive rookies which are starting to loom as "must haves"

Yes, Roberton may well be gone before round 11 as I wont need him for the round 12 bye at least. In fact, looking at that round 12 bye, I will now have 5 spare rookies on the bench and fielding a full 22 only covering 2 on field rookies. So it looks like I'll be bringing in round 12 premos as my main upgrade targets after round 7.
